Character Not Found

An entire guild has an error message saying Character not found.

Its been nearly 3 days since ANY Old School Fools member was able to login on their toons.

What is going on?

Yep over 700 characters.. some of which were on top of the pvp ladder. this is crazy! We submitted a ticket and the response from the GM was “Submit a bug report” HOW ABOUT YOU HELP WITH THAT?!?! Dont you have a inside track on this?!?! @Blizzard get Gud this game is 20+ years old and there’s ZERO transparency on this.

Have you guys put in any tickets? That would be my first suggestion especially if it’s effecting a whole guild.

Never seen that happen before myself.

Yes. many of us have submitted tickets to the GMs but the GMs cant help because its Server side not client side and we are told to stop sending them tickets and to just file bug reports.

you’ve no idea the amount of automated ticket responses ive gotten thus far lol NON say anything non bot related

Tickets are not automated. They do use templates and I agree that in situations like this, that can indeed be frustrating.

100% man! Classic is launching TBC in a month and they’re going to lose people FOR THAT TOO i feel. Im trying very hard not to cancel right now dude I really am. Heck even ACTIVITION on Call of Duty Warzone has a faster customer/bug report response/fix than this! its sad!

This means that the devs/QA team are aware and looking into it. This takes time, and the CS team will not be told anything by the devs until they’re ready to let them know. Bug fixes can take time.

Good thing they have different teams working on things.

Uh huh.

We all likely agree it’s a fustrating situation, but it would you’ve done all that can be done. Now it’s a waiting game.

Throwing around conspiracy theories and insulting the dev team isn’t going to help anything. All it’s proving is ignorance on how complex this game is, and how long it can take to find the bug and implement a solution.

Fingers crossed it’s solved soon.

Is this happening to other guilds too? This is the first I’ve seen of something like this, so to claim that they’re going to lose “entire swaths” of customers seems unlikely.

I’m not saying that this wouldn’t be super-upsetting if it was happening to me too. Just that I’ve not seen any other posts of this kind. So I’m not sure why they would reach out and post something on the forums that only effected a single guild (assuming that it’s not happening to others).

I’ve been posting here in the CS forums for many years. In fact, it’s likely been approximately 15+ years and I’ve never heard of a specific guild not being able to log in at all, while everyone else can. That’s super-unique and would definitely point to a server-side issue too.

Are you able to log into characters that are not in that guild on the same server? For example, are you able to make a new character and log in? Are you able to log into other versions of the game, retail etc? I’m mostly asking because I’m very curious about how wide-spread this issue is for your guild. If it’s only effecting characters in the guild or all characters you have.

Either way, I certainly hope that they (the QA and Dev teams) can resolve this soon for you. Should you chose to discontinue playing and move on to another game, may your travels be bug-free!

I …am a paying customer. I expect answers…if they dont know “sorry.. we dont know.” or a simple solution.. get a GM in there.. and KICK THE GUILD MEMBERS OUT OF THE AFFECTED GUILD. there ..fixed it for ya.

I also have one character that returns the Character not found error. Like everyone else I have followed all the suggested steps, including having the Cache, Interface, and WTF folders recreated after I moved them. The character in question is a bank alt. I was able to send a test mail to the character, I didn’t get an error like the character name didn’t exist on the realm.

o.O

What evidence do you have that your solution would resolve the issue exactly? Additionally, GMs cannot typically kick everyone out of a guild or disband a guild. It’s not something that the Developers tend to allow them to do.

You’re being very condescending about this. We’re not in here to debate how many people constitutes an “entire swath”, we’re here looking for ANY feedback from Blizzard about this beyond “try this troubleshooting article” or “maybe it’ll fix itself”.

What evidence do YOU have that removal from the guild WOULDN’T resolve the issue? I don’t know if it’s possible for a GM to do that, or even for a dev for that matter since the server files seem to be corrupted in some way, but I’d love for someone to try it and I’d love it even more if they told me they tried.

Your overreacting its a small group of people affected if servers were corrupted there would be more people having issues so your saying you tour self should be kicked from the guild because u cant log in.

If they’ve told you it’s a bug, then the Dev team is working on it and that’s all they can tell you at this point until it’s fixed. You are expecting way to much from the GM team who are not coders or developers. They work within specific policies and procedures and can only do what the Dev team grants them to the power to do when it comes to a bug.

Everyone having this issue should submit a BUG REPORT, not a GM ticket. That will give the issue more visibility and let the Dev team know how widespread this issue may be.

Patience is a virtue.

Yeah man, any toon that is made or NOT in Old School Fools can login and play

That’s the difficult part about this sort of medium. It can be hard to tell tone. I assure you that while you’re perceiving condescension, I’m trying to be apathetic and understanding.

But for someone to assume that they know the right fix without having any idea what the underlying issue is, would be short-sighted. Since the GM(s) didn’t just remove all the characters from the guild, I’d wager it’s not the right way to fix the issue.

That’s good to know! Like I said, I’ve never heard of such a thing happening in the past so it’s certainly helpful to know if it’s just characters in the guild. Seems so weird!

According to you, they already did let the right people know though. You said that it’s being looked into. I get being upset, I really do. But being angry that the resolution for something that might never have happened before is taking more than 3 days? Maybe it’s a much more convoluted issue than you know?

And we all pay “real money” to play. But we’re never guaranteed access to specific servers, character nor 24/7 access. I know that’s not what you want to hear, but it’s unfortunately the case when it comes to something like this.

The point I’m trying to get across is that it may be worth trying rather than dismissing. And maybe they HAVE tried it and it didn’t work, but if they have it would be nice to know. It would be nice to get real acknowledgement that something is happening behind the scenes rather than having to assume or read between the lines.
