I was playing around in my covenant hall (necrolord) and my game froze. When I tried logging back in to any character on the realm, a message would come up with “character not found” or “a character with that name already exists”.
I tried restarted client and computer. I tried creating a new character (same message given), I tried logging into a different realm (same message was given). What’s going on?
EDIT: I am now able to log back in. Following every step I could find on the forums and internet did NOT solve this issue. Blizzard, if possible, please respond with what is causing this issue.
I’m having the same issue, so frustrating
Same issue on KhazGoroth. I also tried restarting computer, scan and repair and issue didn’t resolve.
Have same issue, cant find any of my toons. On companion app says server don’t work. Is it WOW under hacker attack? or its massive bug/fault?
It makes no sense. My roommate is on and having no issues at all, and we are on the same realm and faction.
EDIT: I have re-installed WoW completely and it still did not fix this issue. I have no tried every suggestion I can find on the internet and nothing is working.
guys the servers are for certain characters and are coming online periodically… calm down. Nothing is wrong with your game

Do not reply with unhelpful comments. Take that over to GD. If you don’t have a solution or a reason do not post here.
Not really nice attitude mate, some people have simmilar issues why not to post so admins help to all with same issue? plus more people more chance admins would help faster.

I wasn’t talking to you, I was talking to the person who told everyone else to “calm down”.
This usually means there’s a server issue. Reinstalling the game in this instance probably won’t help, unless server techs fix it before the reinstall finishes. Hopefully it’s resolved now?

It resolved last night. Had I known anywhere on the troubleshoot guide provided by Blizzard that re-installing wasn’t necessary, I would have saved myself a lot of time and headache and just waited. Please updated the troubleshoot guide so that other people do not go to such extreme measures. Thank you.
I’ll just interject that I have been playing multiple accounts since before BC was released on multiple pc’s and laptops.
I have never needed to reinstall to fix a problem.

Just to be clear, technical support guides do not list things like ‘don’t re-install our software’ because that’s intended to be obvious. Additionally, the guide wants you to do what’s stated in the support article, and only what is stated in the support article.
Re-installing your games, or programs (apps) or operating system to solve a small error is something that just shouldn’t be done. It’s not proper troubleshooting to start with the most intensive fix.
I mean no disrespect by saying this. But it would be the same reason that the instructions for replacing your tail-light bulb in your car don’t specifically say ‘there is no need to swap your engine out for this procedure.’
It’s a good idea to troubleshoot from the ground-up. Re-installing a game to fix a login issue is indeed like swapping out your engine to fix your tail-light.
Good luck.

I followed all the suggestions provided by Blizzard on the troubleshoot guide (make a new character, new realm, etc.) and none of those worked. On the large “character not found” thread from Oct 2020, it was suggested to uninstall and reinstall, which is the only reason I did it.
All I am asking is that the troubleshooting page be updated to include that uninstalling and reinstalling the game client has no affect, so that other people in the future do not get confused by Blizzard’s instructions last year. It might be obvious to you, but for the general population of players that aren’t game designers, it’s not obvious to us. We just want to play the game.
I’m sorry if my suggestion deeply offends any of you, but I think it’d be a nice touch to help players avoid this confusion.
Anyway, it’s resolved and I have no further desire to discuss this.
It certainly does not, I was just stating my point of view, and defending Blizz’ decision not to specifically state that uninstalling / re-installing isn’t necessary.

Which support article did you use? You should be able to provide feedback in the article directly. But I’m not aware of any that recommend reinstalling.
Now if you found a thread where someone suggested that, then that’s totally different. It likely was another player and not a Blizz employee as it’s very rare to need to reinstall.
Edit to add:
The Character not found support article doesn’t seem to suggest it, nor do any of the linked articles. But if you do think that they should be changed, just click on the No option next to “Did you find this article helpful?”
That’s the best way to provide feedback so it will be seen by the right people.

Yeah, sorry, I am not sure which article you read, or it’s relevance.
If you mean, Character Not found
I don’t see any blue post mentioning this, and a number of players stating trying various things that did not work, such as deleting the launcher app cache, resetting UI (Although this was SL pre-patch day, so resetting your UI would have been recommended due to it being an expansion pre-patch).
