Double false. There was never a confirmed case of it, and that being the only reason. This was a pretty large banwave, and now it looks like it’s being reversed for those that were not doing any wrong and were just armor/model editing.
I can say this for FACT because back in Vanilla there was a HUGE issue with people changing in game models to the point that people were changing campfires to use the Dark Portal model and glitching to places they were not suppose to.
It has NEVER been tolerated, it just died down a lot since then and has not been as big of an issue. Does not mean it was tolerated, there were just more important things to go after.
I knew people using model editing software as far back as MoP who I CONSTANTLY warned “hey, don’t do that, its against Blizzard’s ToS” only to get the typical “Meh, everyone has been doing it and no one has been banned” responses.
Now that people are finally being actioned for doing what they KNOW is against the TOS, as you basically even said with the statement–
–basically admitting it was known to be against ToS its suddenly a shock? Getting actioned for modifying game files was always a risk that those people actively choose to take. Its entirely on them.
Do I think that 6 months is a bit extreme? Yeah, if its their first offense I do agree its a bit extreme to go straight for 6 months as oppose to, say, 72hrs but if they are previous offenders then they knew better.
You normally don’t need to read the TOS if you have the basic level of common sense for any game.
-Don’t RWT unless the company says otherwise
-Don’t edit the game files
-Dont cheat
Anyone going against that deliberately is at risk of getting caught and punished accordingly. No excuses.
Not everyone who got hit by the ban had ever used any model modifications addons either, this was all just speculation.
That said, bans are being reversed, everyone’s getting emails saying it was “in error”. Not even a reduction, it’s a completely removal of the bans. So looks like Blizzard is fine with it after all.
Wait, so Blizzard is ok with it after all?? I’d be interested in official word regarding this then because if it’s considered ok I’d definitely be interested in high res vanilla armor reskins if any exist.
To anyone who’s been playing PC games longer than 5 minutes, ‘don’t edit the game files’ is kiiiind of a loose one.
I remember as recently as 5-10 years ago getting a lot of harmless model/texture edits for a lot of online games I’d play. Never for WoW - I don’t think Modosh ever needed giant tatas - but still a bunch of things that drastically altered the appearance of ingame objects.
I can see people who’ve been around a while finding it a bit ridiculous. On the other hand, seeing as people could apparently change hitboxes, too, according to some posters … That’s a lot more than just a cosmetic change.
Well, this is the email players are receiving right now according to reddit:
Greetings,
As part of our ongoing effort to combat exploitation and abusive behavior, Blizzard recently closed a World of Warcraft license on this Blizzard account.
After performing an additional review of the evidence considered in this action, we’ve determined that this closure was an error. We are reopening this license for play and hope you will accept our sincere apologies for the mistake.
It is our mission to make Blizzard a fun and safe environment for all players, and we are truly sorry that we affected your experience in this fashion. We are always refining our processes and we will learn from this experience as we continue in our ongoing efforts.
We look forward to your safe return to the game, and thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sounds to me they’re bending over to the complainers now…
They make a stand on a matter, then bend over when enough people complain about it. For a moment, I respected Blizzard taking this initiative. Now I’m just disappointed. Again.
Admittedly, it’d be rather strange for them to ban people excessively without giving them a reason, unbanning them the next day, and them banning them again soon after.
What’s happened so far is already teetering on a PR disaster, especially after seeing some of the responses GMs had given confused players yesterday. Namely, refusing to give any further information on why they were banned, let alone reducing/removing the ban.
If Blizzard wants to be smart about it, they’ll stop where they are now before this gets any more traction than it already has. I’m honestly surprised how it’s still pretty quiet on Wowhead, etc on this.
I don’t really feel like digging it up, but I saw a post referring to players using say, the Dark Portal model in place of their campfire to jump on and glitch to places they shouldn’t be.
