Challenge Mode Dungeons Re-open on Tuesday -- Update July 28

nobody cares about who has or doesn’t have the realmfirst CM achievements, it’s a completely solved, decade old version of the game

all it shows is you played like a degenerate on launch with your group and all of you were lucky enough to not be disrupted enough to where you got x minutes ahead of the few other groups doing the exact same thing.

no skill involved here at all.

I imagine the same people complaining about the slate being wiped completely clean would also complain if they decided to just let those who did abuse it keep their rewards

Imagine doing something the right way after a lot of time and dedication. Earning an achievement fair and square and then being lumped in with the crowd that abused the timing system. The request is perfectly reasonable, keep the achievement for the ones who actually earned it, and strip it from those who cheated. It’s not rocket science.

Implying gold challenge mode is anything of particular note

Man what are some of these comments. Like I really only play any version of the game for the mog endgame but I can understand why people are mad about this.

The achievements and accomplishments in this 15 year old version of the game are just as “worthless” as in any other version because ultimately games and hobbies only matter to the people who care about them. That’s kind of the point.

It’s not uncommon for players to rearrange their lives for Blizzard releases. Playing on release is fun and exciting - except when quests are bugged for an hour, but I digress. It’s also not uncommon for players to compete for realm/world first achievements - especially since this is something Blizzard has always encouraged. it’s a lot less fun when Blizzard waits until groups have already raced to get gold in every challenge mode available before deciding to shut them down.

Now add that delay to the frustration over the bug existing in the first place. Then pile on the disappointment when people’s legitimate times are just wiped out overnight - because it’s apparently easier to punish everyone rather than sort out the people that exploited it - and yeah, people are going to be upset. That’s not even including the fact that they are reopening the dungeons when most people are going to be at work.

You don’t have to be a “degenerate” to get it. If I farmed for mog and then it all got reset because some people used an exploit to farm for the same mog, I’d be frustrated. It’s about effort and time being thrown away because the company couldn’t be bothered to do anything but the absolute bare minimum.

Unfortunately, with how clunky releases have been I can’t say I’m too shocked.

We’d like to share more about what happened with the Challenge Mode Dungeon system last week, and our plans moving forward.

What happened?

After the launch of Challenge Mode Dungeons, we encountered a few bugs that heavily impacted those who were pursuing realm firsts. To help maintain a fair race, we disabled Challenge Mode until we could get those issues fixed. Those bugs included:

  • Players who did Challenge Mode Dungeons were awarded every medal (Gold, Silver, Bronze) regardless of the completion time. This affected a small number of players, but these achievements have unique associated rewards that players would get without earning them. It also had a huge potential impact on the race on each realm.
  • Players who completed Heroic Temple of the Jade Serpent were not being rewarded the Heroic achievement, which blocked their access to the Challenge Mode version of that dungeon. This halted groups at 8/9 progress.

Now what?

We fixed the Heroic Temple of the Jade Serpent bug, and players will be able to access that Challenge Mode when they go live tomorrow.

We’ve identified the players who obtained Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals incorrectly and we’re clearing those achievements from players during maintenance. Thereafter, anyone impacted will log in to find those achievements and rewards removed.

We’ve identified the players would would have earned the Realm First! Challenge Conqueror Gold! achievement if the system had not been taken offline, and we’re going to award the Realm First! achievement to them before Challenge Modes are reopened. Again, players will log in and find the achievements awarded.

Our process for determining who would have earned the Realm First! Challenge Conqueror Gold! achievement was quite comprehensive. We took many factors into consideration such as: completion times, acquisition speed of the achievements, players current progress toward Realm First! when the dungeons were disabled, and their lead on the second and third place teams.

In cases where the times were extremely close, we’re awarding it to multiple groups of players.

The removal and addition of achievements will take place during realm maintenance.

As a reminder, Challenge Mode dungeons will be returning at 3:00 p.m. PDT (6:00 p.m. EDT) on Tuesday, July 29.

I do genuinely appreciate you all taking the time to go back and take the extra effort for this. (And hopefully not being too frustrated with us being whiny about it)

No just restarting the realms because those with no jobs were getting upset about realm first DUNGEONS lmao.

I mean PvP has always been the side chick; ever since classic lul

Haha, everything is fiiiiine… Lost play time for many to address the few (meaningless, since no action is actually being taken–just more closing the barn door after horses get out).

This could have been done tomorrow.

I echo a very sincere thank you for taking a look at this.

I recognize in full that this was a nuanced situation that took manual intervention, and had it not been addressed, the world would have moved on.

In my headcanon, this became a dev’s thankless weekend passion project to thoroughly review simply because they felt it was the right thing to do. This resolution is above-and-beyond.

In no caveated or uncertain terms - this is great. You’re the best!

Strange solution as you said players were unable to complete this achievement after not being awarded the heroic achievement for jade serpent.

Do these players get any kind of achievements? Or are you only giving it to players not affected by the bug?
