The problem with that is WoW’s rewards feel lackluster compared to time spent, especially in regards to other games. I used 6 hours of my life raiding last week and received conduits I already have. That was my reward.
In 6 hours playing Elden Ring over the weekend, I got some sick gear, unlocked areas of the map, beat a few bosses and a large questline, and made some serious progress.\
I don’t know. Maybe MMOs aren’t for me anymore. Really struggling to find enjoyment in SL outside of Torghast and a campaign I tore through.
I have to agree with your take on leveling. The destination has gotten all the love, and the journey has lost its shine. I think there are design decisions that could keep both nicely polished.
For the first 3 expansions it was all about raiding and arena for me and my guild. I was GM, and we had a pretty serious schedule. I definitely enjoyed that time in the game, even though it was hectic and had brutal time commitments. Drama and stress were just something you had to deal with to do that. Gear upgrades and bragging rights were what it was all about. I’m not ashamed of that, even though those things now hold little value to me.
Now, for the last 3 expansions, I’m all about the things you mention in your first paragraph. Maybe it’s because I’m older, maybe it’s because I have less free time, but I think there is more to it than that. It’s like: I’ve worked all my (character’s) life and have earned my retirement. Now I fish, and hang out on my farm in Pandaria or my Garrison. My GF and I love to make themed alts and really enjoy a slow approach where we stop to smell every flower. We will turn xp off to stay in Chromie-Time and thoroughly experience past expansions systems and vistas. Always down for one more transmog run before bed.
I’ve traded the big guild experience for the duo experience. I’ve never been happier or more satisfied with my in-game time.
One of the beauties of this game is that it really does cater to both styles.
Ideally, I like a mixture of both. It’s fun beating up on a boss but I cannot adhere to a raid schedule because something about structured play time bores me to tears. I stopped being interested in raids when tier sets went away… for both the set bonuses and the visuals for each class.
I think anyone who only focuses on one minor part of the game (end game raids and Mythic dungeons, PvP, or just doing world quests and nothing else. NOTHING ELSE) is not getting their moneys worth. But that’s none of my business. I know I get mine, I do a little bit of everything.
You have a point, it could be better. I do have to go to out dated expansions to find it. And many of those fun systems are broken now. That said, I truly am having the most fun in the game than I ever have.
Dropping down to solo play has definitely made the game a better experience for me as well, it’s just such a shame that it feels like a lot of the game suffers at the expense of making M+ feel valuable.
I think I would prefer both. But at the same time there is too many things attached to player power and M+ is 100% gear over ilvled for it’s own good as an “optional” content.
If borrowed power systems did not exist and players had less chores I think the game world would open more to them to do what they want to do between raid times. Some would love to progress both in pvp and pve with one charecter even but cannot due to game chore restraints.
Torghast could had been optional like it was meant to be but they failed us by adding player power to it in the end for example.
Players deserve to both enjoy content and feel free to play the game as they feel like it at end-game without feeling like they need to put 100% of their time in building player power. I hope that in 10.0 they will give up on player power systems and just leave it up to what gear you have like old times again, as well as scale down M+ gear a bit so raiding don’t feel so trivial or having them so mandatory.
I like to adventure and explore an area/zone while smelling the flowers. I long ago decided I don’t care about raids/mythics. It’s not my thing. I may occasionally join a LFR. I am glad we have it for us folks who don’t take raiding seriously and want to say hello to the bosses. And I am ok not having a high ilevel, I am good with what I get. Right now I am 248 just doing ZM/crafting. Kudos to the ones that join the hard stuff.
I disagree. I play tons of games and difficulty isn’t something that exists in most. Even without this push to make the games hyper difficult they are still fun though.
I think it’s more because it’s challenging end game content without the time constraints of raiding. If you only got 30 minutes to play, you can get a mythic done. Less repair, feast, potions, etc… cost. Less drama to maintain from giant raid groups. It’s just easier on people’s lives overall, yet still challenging enough that it’s not certain wins every time. I’m not a huge fan of them, but I can see a whole lot of logical reasons why they appeal to so many people.
Depends on the content you do. I do not think mythic+ is hard at all beyond the time limit it gives you. And that is something that just annoys me enough to not want to do them. I’m not playing a racing game or platformer, I’m playing a rpg, an mmorpg that is even.
why aren’t you differentiating between “making a game hyper difficult” and “including difficult content”? there is a huge variety of different content available in this and other games.
Omg!! You have everything I don’t care about! I’m so not jealous! Tell me how you got that! (Puts headset down, gets a drink, takes the dog out) what did you do next? (gets another drink, goes to the bathroom, washes hands). Wow, can’t believe you had to do all that for your awesome gear!
Dedication to the bragging is all about the dedication to oneself.
I have a very chill playstyle. Very chill… I prefer to do whatever strikes me at the moment. I enjoy finding little easter eggs or off-beat things in the game. I like stuff like the writhing leviathan in the underwater tavern off the coast of Vol’dun. I am very much the “smell the flowers” type of player, and it’s highly likely I stay subbed more than raiders and such.
That being said, I would love to do a raid or whatever. Wanted to since Ulduar. I just don’t want to rush.
I’ve stopped PvP altogether. It doesn’t have the same charm as it did many years ago.
Nah the game would totally be improved if ytou all would accept 10n’s “perfect vision” for the game.
