I’m wanting to use this name on a new alt and temporarily delete this one. Perhaps for a long time. I simply can’t afford the name change on its own right now.
I’m wondering if, later on when I can afford the name change, I can restore this character and simply pay to change their name then? I’m okay with this character being inaccessible in the meantime.
I’m happy to answer further questions if that’s still too vague. Thank you!
Yes and no. The system doesn’t allow you to immediately restore a deleted character if it shares a name with an active character on your account. This generally prevents folks from using it as a free name change service.
That said, after 30+ days, you should be able to restore the character without that restriction and be prompted to select a new name instead. In other words, you shouldn’t have to purchase a name change, if you are willing to wait out that cooldown for the deleted character.
I should note, this would not apply to characters on Classic. In that case, the conflict would have to be resolved before the character could be restored.
I’m someone that restores deleted characters all the time. Even after the 30 day mark, you will get the error that says the name is in use. Just put in a ticket and as long as it has been more than 30 days, they’ll help you.
Btw, most of the characters I restore has been deleted for years and I get this error every time.
Is this still a legit option for undeleting characters? Support is giving me the answer of having to pay for name changes each character down my list and then change my mains name again. costing me like $40 when the characters have been deleted for months.

Yes and no. As I said before, the undelete option is not intended to allow folks to circumvent the naming service. So, in most situations our staff can make an exception to assist when a character that a person is trying to undelete also shares a name with an existing character. It is not guaranteed, but we are often able to help.
In this case, it looks like the characters deletion dates were very close to that 30 days and it is likely they didn’t immediately realize it was just over the 30 day period. It looks like you have a second ticket in, a Game Master should be able to take another look.
It may be worth opening your own thread since this one leaps with several month chunks of responses and the original post is from back in October of 2019. But perhaps someone who has done this or has an answer could respond before the thread itself is locked up.
well that sucks Because Ive had my maged deleted for a long while now trying to make a pally on the allyside with the same name and I cant… not sure what I can do now
You are trying to use the name of the character that was deleted, Anorak? On the same realm?
If the character was level 30+ it would have been placed on a reserved list, but only for 30 days. After 30 days the name would become available to anyone.
The mage is/was lvl 60 on the horde side and Im wanting to play a pally on the ally side in wow classic… I think I deleted him about 2 months ago. Yes both on the same realm.
Assuming this is the same WoW license that your posting character is on (WoW#2). I don’t see any level 60 Horde Characters that were deleted, though I see one that was transferred twice.
The first, transferred in January from Mankrik, the name should be available.
The second, transferred recently from Azuresong, looks to be available too. Though wouldn’t be available on a different Battle.net account.
