Burning of Teldrassil is Narrative Poison

Wish you could mute phrases here like on Twitter. I have never seen a positive post with these words next to each other in it.

To be fair, these types of threads generally stop being productive after the first couple posts. But we can’t help ourselves :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

In the real world, we did stop bring up Shiloh, Gettysburg, Pearl Harbor, and Hiroshima. We don’t even talk about Grenada or 9/11 in most conversation.

Life does go on. The world apparently fought off a Scourge resurgence while we were frolicking about in the Shadowlands, so past horrors tend to be eclipsed by more recent ones.

It took a lot longer than 4 years before we stopped talking about those. We still talk about 9/11 20 years later.

I’d say Teldrassil is more comparable to the Holocaust, which is talked about quite often. I did whole lessons on it in high school, and I’m only 20-years old, so that wasn’t that long ago.

Also, Grenada is an example of U.S. imperialism. They would never teach that in schools.

Frankly, I think it’s the other way around—I think that is one of the reasons they went along with putting it into the game in the first place. Because they knew it was a ready-made sore spot they could press whenever they want to rile up the Alliance playerbase.

That… is an exceptionally plausible theory, knowing what we know. Something like a mad scientist unleashing a horror, getting thrashed by it, then chasing the monster because they need more samples.

Except the whole victims of the attrocity hellbent on exacting revenge on their goddess. The Night elves possible relocation to a far-off land or replanting of the tree. The whole Night elf leader having to go off himself to bring back a useless green dragon.

Yeah sure seems like they really have finished with this story. Im sure by the time those story lines are done Anduin and sylvanas will wander back into the story and it will all be brought up again. All the while none of that has dealt with the crux of the issue and that is the Alliance never got to bring anyone to justice. Until that is put in the game you aren’t going to have this story resolved and its going to hang over the story like a bad smell.

Tyrande already punished Sylvanas. It’s a lore point I think alliance players are purposely overlooking, because events didn’t play out how they wanted them too

and yet blizzard is still dragging this story out longer and longer and the complaints aren’t going anywhere that the story hasn’t been handled well.

Im just sick of this story and just want it resolved but unless it is done well it is going to ruin the experience going forwards and going to prevent them writing anything constructive because anytime any conflict is brought up between the factions this will be brought up.

How is this bad? Just because you are a victim does not mean you immune to be morally in the wrong. In fact some of the best villains in fiction are bad/evil because of atrocities committed to them.

The War of Thorns is not a bad plot beat but it was executed on an amateurish level.

I can see it now :

As the Night Elves are celebrating their new tree, Sylvanas rides through the greenery on a goblin motorcycle, with Anduin riding pillion.

Sylvanas : “what’s up, nerds? I just cleared out the maw and got Anduin his groove back.”

And then she pulls out an electric guitar and plays a swift riff.

If only the writing of WoW was consistently on such a high levels as this, I think a lot more players would be happy.

When was the last time you mentioned the Holocaust or 9/11 in casual conversation? i.e. not on a social media forum like this one.

Magneto comes to mind. He’s a Holocaust survivor that intends to inflict the same on non-mutants.

It would be most appropriate if she appears driving up to Malfurion’s funeral.

If I gave an honest answer to this, it would reveal too much about how messed up my household is.

I imagine that 9/11 was frequently on the minds of our national leaders and the soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq a mere 5 years after the event, which is far closer to our characters’ situations than a bunch of lore nerds looking for escapism 20+ years later.

Azeroth however had a couple of global catastrophes since then, the last being a Scourge resurgence. For most in the Eastern Kingdoms, Teldrassil was a distant event.
