Brazilians do not speak spanish

Please give them their own server(s) or whatever it takes for everyone to have a better experience.

I look back at my experiences in retail with players from Ragnaros, Quel’thalas, etc… I know I’m probably going to come off as prejudice, but as most people will agree, those interactions were almost never positive. Many issues could be due to the language barrier and resolved by giving them a server where they can communicate effectively.

Sure, denmark 6mi pop, netherlands pop 17mi, Brazil Pop 210mi

Well I doubt that lexical difference is a linear measure of similarity.

Numerically, the relative difference between Spanish/Portuguese and English/German is probably something more like:

11%^2 = 121
40%^2 = 1600

If you read the article I posted, it says 2 languages are considered very similar if the lexical similarity is 85% or higher. 60% is very far from that.

Ive seen Americans speaking Norwegian, that must mean they all can speak it right?

People who speak spanish that are from spain can hardly converse with mexicans that speak spanish. Its really really different in spite of sharing 90% of the words. None of the slang makes sense, the grammer is different, etc… For all intents and purposes we cant send a person who speaks fluent mexican spanish to spain to translate a business proposal because the language difference would be so profound it would be unprofessional to expect it to be a good translation.

You are using simple sentences as evidence.

We are mostly not talking about that, considering that most of the simple orders or questions in English are comprehensible by everyone (pull X, wait for X, need X and most usual rpg terms). The point of Brazilians servers is being able to make socialization, guilds and such things easier or accesible for most people.

I literally work with people from Argentina and Bolívia. I definitly cannot keep a conversation with them in their native language even If I use mine to respond. Of course I can understand simple things - like need for water, help, etc. On other hand, I’ve worked with American people and it was easy communication. You can’t make such generalizations about how Brazilians communicate.

I’m native spanish (Argentina) and still would prefer an english server over a portuguese one. Yes, there are simiraties on both languages, and I can deduce the meaning of some sentences, but my english is better than my “portuñol” by far, and I can assume it is the same from a lot of Brazilians.

First off I never said they aren’t deserving

Don’t move the goal post.

I said that Brazil has shown that it has a large playerbase, is linguistically distinct from other nations on it’s continent, and should get a server

Assuming that the Danes and dutch meet those criteria I wouldn’t be against them using that.

Me being in favor of something doesn’t mean that I’m against your little strawman

First off Quebecois generally speak fluent english as well as french as their schools dictate that training and the culture seems to encourage english language comprehension, they also have a much smaller population

The three major languages in this hemisphere are Spanish, English, and a far third is portuguese BUT portugese is frankly a language spoken in a large nation with a large population and a large WoW playerbase.

Considering quebec doesn’t have a massive population it makes sense to roll the in with other canadians and americans. Brazil is larger than canada.

edit before the smartallecs get me

BRAZIL IS LARGER IN POP SIZE NOT GEOGRAPHICALLY

The simple sentences are for people who speak neither language to show them how the languages are similar. My family is from Spain, grew up in a city in Canada where there’s a large Portugese Population, as well as many people from Mexico and South Aemrica, leading to my own godparents being portugeese. In my early 20s in University, I also dated a Brazilian, and in graduate school, my supervisor was from Brasil. I finished my PhD and I am now a lecturer in linguistics.

Yes, I CAN make generalization about how Brazilians communicate and how well people who understand Spanish and Portuguese understand each other.

Yet, you want to tell me why other groups are less deserving.

If you are going to bring up Brazil’s large population, then I will bring up the fact that more than 50 million of them are living in poverty. A more developed nation, even with a smaller population, may actually produce more gamers.

I don’t think there’s many people playing WoW in the Favelas.

Ultimately, all the socialization that you want to with other Brazilians can still happen. The irony is the request that if Brazil can’t have its own server, then have it be with American ones.

NEWSFLASH: Most Americans don’t want to be with brazilians.

You can talk about how well Brazilians speak English, and how it’s culture is the most similar to the US. The brutal reality is that most Americans view Brazil as an underdeveloped nation and there are more threads asking to remove Brazilians from their server as opposed to the opposite. That’s the hard reality.

Man, after reading the comments. Do some of you live in an alternate reality?

Literally arguing with people who speak the language and telling them they are wrong. LOL just wow.

eyeroll Americans.

What the heck are you talking about, I only said brazil was definitely a good candidate for having its own servers, I didn’t say anything about the netherlands

You gave a nice lengthy explanation explaining why French Canadians don’t deserve their own server. You explain why Brazil deserves one, while Quebec doesn’t. You based your statement on population, when population doesn’t relate to how many people in that country are actually playing WoW or video games in general. Brazil has almost twice the population of Japan, but Japan has many more video game players, and they don’t even get their own server!

Korea has only 77 million - and they have MULTIPLE servers because video game playing is quite mainstream so many people are playing WoW in addition to numerous other video games where video games are a true e-sport.

In short, the population of the country is less important than the number of people actually playing WoW or video games period. There are more video game players in Korea despite it being 1/3 the population of Brasil.

This wins for the dumbest statement in this thread.

You don’t understand spanish at all?__ I’m fluent in spanish, and because of that, I’ve been able to understand (not speak) a lot of what my portuguese friends say. The two languages have very similar roots and I would imagine that those who know portuguese can understand much of spanish.

But in response to your actual post instead of nitpicking your words: yeah you make a fair point and I think Blizzard should look into it a little more. I can only imagine it depends on the player base size of Brazil compared to that of other Latin/South America countries, but Idk

First off you’re just being blatently insulting isntead of talking about why

the entire population of quebec is barely enough to justify a server, if they actually played

there are less people in quebec then there are in NYC

the idea that quebec deserves a server, when law of averages tells me they would have less than 50k players total, tells me that there would be a much stronger case for having a server only for NYC or LA then for the entire province of quebec. We know that those massive pop areas aren’t enough to justify their own servers because law of averages applies again.

Now if you could stop calling people names that’d be nice

Well, at least in brazil we have studied geography in schools, your argument just show us why Blizzard is openning a new LA realm, just for segregate our community… So will be a pleasure wont move Usa realms, ty!

Os incomodados que se mudem, otário…

Some people (maybe you) argued that Brazil deserves its own server it due to its distinct culture and language, which also applies to Quebec.

Quebec, and Canada in general, are also major video game developers.
Do you know where Bioware started?
Ever heard of Blizzard north?
Do you know how many video game companies have offices in Canada, like Ubisoft in Montreal, or how many famous video games were created in Canada?

Population isn’t a sufficient reason. Brazil has almost twice the population as Japan, but there are more video game players in Japan than Brazil, and Japan doesn’t have its own server. South Korea is only 77 million, and it has MANY servers, both pve and pvp, because video games are very mainstream in Korea, so the number of people playing video games is higher than in Brasil.

For example, Brazil has a larger population than Canada, but which one do you think has more people playing hockey?

I don’t think you are wrong.

There have been many threads over the years to have all the spanish and brazilian speaking players be in a server away from US players.

Well, we dont understand Portuguese. Portuguese though is very close to Spanish. You can understand them and they cant understand you, so it all seems to work out for Brazil.

Take a WoW break and sub to Rosetta Stone.

Truth. I speak Italian and I can sometimes get the gist of written Portuguese so when I met someone from Portugal who didn’t speak English I thought, no problem, I’ll speak Italian with him and we should do fine. Nope. We couldn’t understand each other at all. We spent the day playing charades, LOL.
