problem is, if they just gave beta away to everyone wanting it they wouldn’t have as many sales come august.

This isn’t early access, and we aren’t entitled to anything.

People these days tend to treat betas like early access, and then not support the game financially. You see it all the time.

why so bitter about it though? It isn’t any different than giving IGN, Gamespot, or EGM early access back in 2004 to promote the game.

Jeez, lighten up man. I know we all want in, i do too, but relax about it… we should be thankful the streamers are playing it and generating this much interest. It is free advertising for a game that likely has 0 budget for it.

Well for the legion and bfa betas they are either lying or remembering wrong.

I was in both and for both i couldn’t get into the servers when my sub ended.

This has been exhausted. Yes, they got streamers in because they want beta to be more visible. It’s a perfectly reasonable marketing strategy. No, not reasonable, AMAZING from their point of view because it’s completely FREE marketing. If they didn’t do this they would be idiots.

Proof of this? Multiple streamers and forum posts have said they don’t remember betas ever requiring a sub. I could be misinformed on that.

And for those who want to whine about active subscriptions being required:

Be prepared to enter your World of Warcraft account name, password, and the account-upgrade key listed below. To participate in the beta test immediately, the retail World of Warcraft account that you’d like to use for beta testing must be active as of October 8, 2006 . If the account is activated sometime after October 8, it will be ready for use in the beta test after the subsequent weekly beta maintenance period, which occurs every Monday between 12pm and 4pm PDT . For example, if you activate the account today, you will be able to start playing the closed beta on the following Monday after 4pm PDT.

plus, if we’re being honest, classic has a bigger demand of people asking to be let in than BFA/Legion beta’s.

People are practically throwing childish fits to get in just because X streamer got in.

I didn’t get in, but i also don’t generate 100k followers watching me play every day. That’s free advertising that you can’t put a price on.

No. A requirement of beta was an active sub. If you wanted to be considered for beta, you CHOSE to subscribe.

Capering around playing the semantic game is fun.

Just like Powerball… you can get a chance to win millions IF you choose to buy a ticket. No one is forcing you to buy a ticket… but your chances of winning is “greatly reduced”.

If you want to win powerball, the only possible way is to buy a ticket. IE: forced to buy a ticket if you want to play powerball. Putting lipstick on it in the way of word play does not disprove the OP.

As i said, this whole post was never about me not getting in. Its about how blizzard implemented this subscription requirement knowing full well their overall beta scheme was to get streamers to advertise it for free and get money from dangling a carrot to the loyal customers. If they just came out and said they were inviting select people and not requiring a sub, i would have been bummed, but i wouldn’t have cared enough to post about it.

Okay let’s add blizzard friends and family to the number. Plus content creators which i already mentioned and everyone only focuses on streamers because we can look them up and see how many there are.

Not nearly the majority, no and all the “content creators” I would have expected to see in the beta, aren’t, either.

The sub requirement is more so for the stress test, not the beta. The beta is simply for free marketing essentially, or family and friends.

Secondly, the betas and stress tests have just BEGUN. We have months more of it that people can get in.

No where did it say “You sub and we got you in the first round of testing, fam”.

It said you have a small chance to be randomly picked from a pool of potential testers; the more people who apply, the less chances we all have. Blizz had an avalanche of people banging the door down.

You still may get a beta, or a stress test key in the weeks to come so relax man.

EDIT: PS - i’m a streamer with about 100 followers, and i didn’t get in either. I feel ya man i want in badly too, but at least august is close enough. TBH, i’d be more concerned personally about getting the name i want on aug 13 than beta (*To which you will need a sub for a month we aren’t playing to get the name)

I went ahead and did an in depth head count on the Beta PvP test realm.

Horde(PvP) has about 575 people online. (82 of which are at the level cap of 30–a previous night, when I checked their level capped population there were an addition 20-some players online, so this head count is low, which should be expected, given the time of day)

Alliance(PvP) has about 521 people online. 96 of whom are at level cap(level 30). They’re also showing fewer level 30’s on than when I check in the evening hours a couple days ago .

Now the PvE realm looks pitiful by comparison:
Horve(PvE) 271 online, 11 of which are level capped.
Alliance(PvE) 362 online, 25 of which are level capped.

Now obviously, this is a true concurrency, this count was done with many manual /who’s performed over a span of about 20 minutes on 4 different logins. So it’s going to have a margin of error. But by my count, I see 1,729 results. Which is a higher number than 1,000.

This also doesn’t cover the F&F/Alpha rest realm which we now know still exists due to Blizzard’s problems when adding in Warsong Gulch. I’d also generally expect that for any “census” attempt made by a player, that for every player seen, there are probably another 1 to 3 players you didn’t see at that particular time. Given the time of day I did this at (between 9 and 930 AM pacific time on a Sunday), I’d expect it to miss closer to 3 than to 1. But going with an Average miss rate of 2 for every one counted on this “Sweep” through the population, you have a beta test population of about 3,500 people. Not 1,000. Going with 3 grows the population to somewhere in the 5 to 6 thousand range for the beta which I think is probably about right. The Alpha probably adds a few thousand more on top of that.

But still, even six thousand players out of pool that is likely to be somewhere in the 6 digit range as it is, would be just a drop in the proverbial bucket.

If you take percentages instead of raw numbers, the majority of invites were streamers and content creators. Period.

So you’re saying there are over 2000 streamers involved in the beta at present?
