(BETA) Dragonflight Priest Talent Tree Feedback Thread

Has it already been explained why disc gets 2 free class talent points, but shadow and holy only get one?

Also, I’m sure the twink community is absolutely drooling over the thought of having PI, feather and GS at level 20!

Only half-serious here but I’m lowkey bummed they didnt add the Leap of Faith legendary as a talent. I was so hoping to be able to fly myself across the battlefield . Oh well! Seems like there are some neat things in here. Not a fan of the “while shielded” talents though.

During the two seconds that your shield lasts…

The “shield buffs your damage” talent options are just… odd. I don’t have PWS on my bars as holy,

Also sad about boon/guardians not making the cut in favor of Mindgames.
The holy tree isn’t too bad, but I walk out with… one or two? gains. The rest is just rebuilding my existing kit and a few conduits I’d already taken.
I think priest is/can be closer to a hybrid between the 3 specs than I’d have expected, but Discipline was already a thematic hybrid between holy and shadow so I guess it was a given.

Missed opportunity to incorporate the better iterations of Discipline into the trees (WoD Discipline that is).

What a shame.

So from the perspective of a Shadow Priest in PvP situations or any situation where things tend to die fast… Random 5 mans, Questing, Battlegrounds, Non-Fortified Trash in M+ etc.

My biggest gripe about Shadow ever since the Legion Shadow Revamp was that it flipped the entire spec on its head from a Dot/Burst spec to a massive Dot/Drain/Ramp spec.

To clarify… When I say “Burst” I mean our Mind Blast hitting HARD, our Mind Spike hitting HARD be it naturally or from talents. Since Legion Voidform redesign, as Shadow, you struggle with the very “quick” content because your instant/quick cast damage abilities are very weak as all your power is tied to dots ramping up in damage/haste and then since Shadowlands. The spec acts like a big Cooldown spec with both Power Infusion + Void Eruption/Voidform.

So Here are my concerns…

  • Quick fight encounters
Shadow is very weak when it comes to on demand damage outside of a Voidform Cooldown.

  • PvP / movement
Situations where the more you move or get Crowd Control chained, the less affective you are as very weak when it comes to movement (no blink, teleport, charge, root, immunity etc.)

  • Damage Reduction / Prevention
As a Priest, (but especially Shadow) generally we have very little when it comes to preventing damage (immunity) Reducing damage (Damage reduction) and Mobility (Avoiding damage).
Instead we rely on self healing and offensive tools (Silence, Psychic scream, Psychic Horror or Damage Reduction/Healing cooldown that incapacitates us etc.) as a means to prevent taking damage. So anything that we do that results in anyone coming up and smacking us in the face, we quickly fall to the wayside.

  • Voidform / Insanity Drain
Once again, any movement or CC against us severely cripples any momentum you need in order to actually do anything or to be a threat (In Voidform and get silenced and watch your 2 min CD go to waste because it will knock you out before you can cast again and fight an uphill battle to do anything).

  • AoE
Proper AoE abilities that don’t fight/conflict with our dotting ramp up. In the past, prior to us having Mind Sear, we basically didn’t have any means to AoE. We then got Mind Sear and it worked great for a while, until balancing came into play and it quickly got nerfed down. Now it struggles to be good but not too good. Its not supposed to be better then Mind Flay for single target yet it needs to be better then just multi dotting 4-5+ mobs.

  • New WoW 10.0 Shadow Talent Layout
I see several things that I just don’t like that are requiring to progress further and make no sense.
    Examples like…

    • Shadow Crash & Void Torrent needed to progress further down to the last section of the tree.
    • Void Touched talent needing to be picked up to progress the tree that only affects Voidbolt but getting the ability to use Voidbolt can be missed altogether.
    • Insidious Ire actually able to be picked yet nothing is branching down to it. This is fine mechanically, but it it not intuitive to know this until you finally have 20 points already picked.
    • The Old Gods Choice Talents. Without really testing them, things like… Idol of Y’Shaarj is just to cryptic to understand what that actually means and how it can fit into your talent build.

Here are my Goals…

  • Quick fight encounters
Give a burst / quick cast spell(s) that can get the job done fast without the need for dots or cooldowns. (Clarity of Power, Mind Spike & Shadow Word: Death)

  • PvP / movement
Allow the ability to cast with instant abilities or procs without force to root yourself and open yourself up for interrupts. (Mind Melt / Rooting enemy)

  • Damage Reduction / Prevention
Same as above, (Mind Melt / Rooting enemy)

  • Voidform / Insanity Drain
    Opt out of Voidform outright.

  • AoE
Mix between Shadow Apparitions and Shadow Fiend uptime.

  • New WoW 10.0 Shadow Talent Layout

    • Shadow Crash & Void Torrent are now optional and no longer required to progress.
    • Void Touched talent is moved to only being able to be picked up after you have locked in the ability to use Voidbolt.
    • Insidious Ire moved to be connected to a path.
    • The Old Gods Choice Talents. Moved all 4 into 1 talent that is only an option after you are able to have Voidform. These talents will ONLY proc while during Voidform and only 1 can proc at a time.

Here are my changes to Blizzards Shadow Talent Tree…

New Abilities from past incarnations of Shadow.

  • Pain and Suffering
Shadow Word: Death Damage increased by 250% to targets at or below 20% health. Reduces the damage you take from your own Shadow Word: Death by 30% & you instantly gain 20% of your total mana.
  • Mind Melt
Increases your Mind spells critically strike chance by 3/6/9%.
  • Paralysis
When you critically hit with your Mind Blast, you cause the target to be unable to move for 4 sec.
  • Clarity of Power (Took out the instant Mind blast because we get procs that grant this)
Your Mind Spike, Mind Sear, and Shadow Word: Death deal 40% additional damage to targets not affected by your Shadow Word: Pain or Vampiric Touch. Also reduces the cooldown on Mind Blast by 3 sec.
  • Mind Spike
Blasts the target with Shadowfrost damage, but extinguishes your Shadow damage-over-time effects from the target in the process.
Mind Spike also increases the critical strike chance of your next Mind Blast on the target by 30%. Stacks up to 3 times.
  • Surge of Darkness
Your Devouring Plague and Vampiric Touch have a 10% chance to make your next Mind Spike instant, deal 50% more damage, and not consume your damage-over-time effects. Up to 3 charges.
  • Shadow Power
Increases the critical damage of your Shadow spells by 10/20%.
  • Dark Archangel
Increases the damage done by your non-periodic Shadow damage abilities by 20%. Lasts for 18 sec. 90 sec cooldown.

This is my Cata Variant of Shadow for 10.0 Talent revamp…

This is my WoD Variant of Shadow for 10.0 Talent revamp…

Misc. Notes…

  • Changed around some “points required” in some of the abilities.
  • As much as I would rather the Shadow Orb system (its simple and fun… each ability that grants an orb is 1 orb each time you use the ability. Each ability that uses the orb will have a easy to see in both the tooltip and your resource interface if you have enough orbs) Unlike now I have no idea how much Searing Insanity costs, nor do I care. I don’t want to have to do math to figure out how many pulses of Searing Insanity I can do if my insanity bar is around 60% yuk… So… anyway I am just going to tolerate the insanity resource as much as it disgusts me to do so.
  • I am not focusing that much on the top end as for the most part it makes sense to me.
  • I have no idea if we get Purify baseline but we should if our class talents modify it. So that’s a potential fail if shadow does not get purify.
  • Power Infusion should be self cast only… ever. However, you should be able to talent into it to allow like a 5-15% haste bonus to your group within 20-30 yards of you when you use Power infusion on yourself. I don’t want to have to give up my CD for someone else. I don’t want to have to make a macro or click on them in order to do all that. Not worth it… especially so at my own determent.

I can’t give any feedback on the new Idol spells, but I would like to see Fortress of the Mind have it’s place swapped with Death and Madness. I’d also like to see Void Touched swapped with Mind Devourer.

I agree, I can’t see spending anything on a spell (Shackle Undead) that I cast maybe twice during an expansion.

Lightwell has always been a meme in PvE. In most incarnations, a hilariously awful meme. However, some iterations were decent in PvP. It’s OK to have PvP-only talents, right?

I’d say it depends if it can be destroyed or not. The last iteration I remember where it became useful in PvP, it could be targeted like a totem.

Just want to add that there are a number of entirely “new” spells and abilities that have never been a thing before. This is both hilarious and concerning.

It’s funny because they still have no idea what the spec is supposed to do, so they keep adding new things instead of just going back to what worked.

Its concerning because now we are all very uninformed on what exactly all this new stuff does and how it will work / flow while playing. So we are left in the Shadows (pun very much intended) as to how to properly provide constructive criticism.

Such spells that really cant be weighed in until we can get into the game and test / play around are…

Shadow Tree…

  • Mental Fortitude
Healing from Vampiric Touch when you are at maximum health will shield you for the same amount. Shield cannot exceed a certain value, based on Talent Rank.
  • Living Shadow
Consuming a Vampiric Insight causes your Shadow to animate after a moment. For 10 sec, whenever you cast a spell, your shadow will cast a similar spell.
  • Eidolic Intuition
Vampiric Insight has a greater chance to occur.
  • Idol of N’Zoth
Damage dealt by Shadow word: Pain, Vampiric Touch, and Devouring Plague has a 20% chance to apply Echoing Void. Each time Echoing Void is applied, it has a chance to collapse, dealing Shadow damage to all nearby enemies untill no stacks remain.
  • Idol of Y’Shaarj
Shadowfiend causes you to gain a benefit based on your targets current emotional state.
  • Idol of C’Thun
Mind Flay and Mind Sear have a chance to spawn a Void Tendril or Void Lasher that channels at your target for 15 sec, generating 3 insanity every 1 sec.
  • Idol of Yogg-Saron
After conjuring 50 Shadowy Apparitions, you summon a Thing from Beyond that serves you for 20 sec. The Thing from Beyond blasts enemies for Shadow damage.

Class Tree…

  • Shadowmend - Why are we stuck with Shadow Mend? From how it appears, its not replacing Flash Heal, does that mean we have Flash heal baseline? if so then that’s all I want. Shadowmend is the worst if your trying to heal in PvP.

Discipline Tree…

  • Purify
Dispels harmful effects on the target, removing all Magic and Disease effects.
    • Why is this in the Discipline tree? Does holy not have it? Can holy not dispel magic debuffs from party without talenting into Mass Dispel? Purify should be a CLASS spell. Not a specialization spell.

Yeah, it would be better if they changed the leap of faith talent pick to one of the “either/or” picks and you get to choose between Leap of Faith or Leaping Lizards.

adding, they didn’t even bother making shadowform better. They just blatantly removed it!
------ ignore top comment - wowhead comment concerned me ;_;.

At least make it a choice between void and shadow. And further, improve upon what shadow form was original.

Why? why must we be stuck with just voiiiid. Why couldn’t shadow form evolve?

EDIT: Found it – you retain it, it just doesn’t appear anywhere on the trees… cool cool.
Would be nice if they improved it though and contested it with Voidform itself.

This is really irritating…

These should be Class spells but are not…

  • Prayer of Healing
A powerful prayer that heals the target and the 4 nearest allies within 40 yards.

  • Psychic Voice (its a talent in all 3 specs… move it to class talent ffs.)
Reduces the cooldown of Psychic Scream by 30 sec.

Already created some fully sick mythic plus and raid builds for disc. So over the moon atm. Cant wait for pre patch for this to drop.

Personally liking the holy tree.

A lot of synergies we couldn’t pick together due to the SL talents or legendary choices are returning. Even more Holy Word CDR coming back!
Hoping the abilities are tuned well so we go back to actually pressing most of our buttons again depending on situation, not just Heal for everything.

The base priest tree seems like you could make some cool mindbender m+ build for extra damage and some mana return - not to mention the PI talent.

Sure it sucks that FC isn’t a talent, but I’d prefer it be gone rather than having that playstyle being the be all and end all again.

They got a lot of support in M+. Inner Light+Shadow as a PvE talent is pretty big. Lots of mana support being able to grab death throes and Shadowfiend. Reflective Shield + Mindgames + Light’s Wrath is great - gives you multiple burst heal buttons for bad moments. Wicked star is likely insane for dungeon packs, and you get Kiss of Death for free going for it.

We also just… get twins of the sun priestess now, which is huge considering it was already our best SL leggo.

Realistically, Disc comes out of this with straight buffs across the board. We basically get to be what Disc was in 9.0, but also we get 3 of the 9.0 leggos at the same time and random damage buffs.

I can make a build without void form.

With.out.void.form.

I am happy.

Yes disc came out pretty good. I AM curious if prayer of mending when it bounces and heal if it gets boosted with people with atonement. Did i also see we can use flash heal?

I think Interrupts and Silence work different.
The talent describes the effect as a Silence so it will most likely work as any silence in the game like mages and shadow priests.

The strong part about it is that it’s an AoE silence which could be huge. And if it silence two times it becomes a 4s aoe silence.
