Battletags, toon names & avoiding an ex

I have a family member that is trying to do what they can to avoid an ex-spouse on WoW. They used to play in the same guild and they both know each others toon names, servers and battletags and of course were friends linked in game. Divorce is long over and she wants to play without having to watch over her shoulder. It appears that if you change your battletag then your current friends will still be attached to your account. I’m assuming that if they are no longer friends on WoW and have blocked each other that if she changes her battletag and toon names he won’t be able to find her?

i suppose he wouldn’t as far as I know.

and people say scenarios like this dont happen.

maybe swap alt to a new account? and good point on this, it’d be good to have measures in place for this. (I did the blocking route and so far so good)

You can unfriend BTags and it will remove you from their list as well.

However, anyone can add someone’s character-server to their individual friends list and there’s no way to stop that. Like I can add you “Rheyy-Thrall” and see when you’re online without you knowing that I have you on my friends list. That’s why BTags are safer and why even the forums should convert to BTags like every other Blizzard game forums.

So now this person has to unfriend BTag and either server transfer all of their toons or name change them all. Or just ignore this person and not worry about what they are doing in-game. There’s even a chance a name change on it’s own won’t help, someone else might know this better.

?
Of course if you block someone then change your btag and toon names they can’t find you based on those things. Stop fishing for attention.

THIS is why this forum SUCKS…people like you doing THIS when someone comes in here asking simple questions.

perma blocked.

doing what? Telling people to stop bloating forums for attention? Bad enough blizz had all it’s employees/friends/family accounts wash over the forums about an overpriced store mount to drown out feedback regarding the last patch launch…

There’s a sale going on right now.

Tell her to change her server, change her name. Pick names she hasn’t used before.

Nah I’m ngl brother this is weird…

Fishing for attention at 6 in the morning, just asking for genuine help?
Stop being purposely toxic for the sake of being toxic, it’s weird and it’s killing a game that I enjoy playing.

Oh THAT’S why you’re being salty, you’re a brokie and can’t afford to spend $90 right now? Would you like me to buy it for you, would that make you stop being so oddly toxic on the forums?

no one said it doesn’t happen.

but being btag based would mean there is btag ignore. and then this situation would be easily fixed

Thanks for showing your hand.
You’ve further proven this thread has zero merit because your baseless offtopic trolling is all you can muster to bump engagement for your little buddy/ your alt. Pretty pathetic to be quite honest. :joy:

The Battletag is easy to resolve. Unfriending them removes you from their friends list so your friend would be fine. They can’t talk to your friend via Battlenet at all without their permission. They can only send one friend request - and your friend can block that forever. Done. They would also want to check their Security Settings here on the website and remove any friend of friend suggestions options.

IN-GAME is totally different and used an antiquated system that is outside Battlenet.

  • In-game people can add your character-server to their friends list without your permission. You can’t stop that. They can see when that char is online, where it is, and what it is doing.
  • CHANGING THE NAME DOES NOTHING! The name updates to the new one on their friends list. Stalker can see the new name if they are paying attention.
  • Ignore is helpful in keeping them from talking to you but you have to ignore them from each and every character of yours that you play. It also does not work if they are on other servers outside your merged server group.
  • Transferring servers I THINK can help - but that requires a paid move.

So, the answer is that your friends Battletag contact points are easy to block/control and they have total privacy there. The In-Game features are much much less secure an require a paid transfer or switching to an alt the ex does not know about.

If the ex engages in ongoing harassment by going around the tools in place to stop contact, Blizzard will penalize that.

i think blizzard gives you a one time chance to change your battle tag, if you already used it I think its 10 dollars. she could change her battle tag

There’s no point in doing this. If someone sends you an invite, you decline. That’s all there is to it.

Unfriend the person, then change your battletag?

Might be able to change the email address the account is attached to, to help hide the btag?

Does showing ourselves offline help at all? If it doesn’t show you online to your friends, that might help.

This situation sucks. Peace, friend. Strength.

Pot calling the kettle black dude.

You’re an attention junkie.

Many of us are not rookies here, and know a try hard when we see one.

All good, you won’t be around for long, your kind never are.
