Battle.net App Update Loop

Any word on this yet?
I’ve been having to re-install BC classic every time I launch the game… I’ve done it over 10 times now, dating back over a week.

I’ve tried all the permissions things suggested here. I even attempted doing a thorough case insensitive search for “blizzard” “battle.net” and “warcraft” to find every last folder that battle.net/wow uses on my machine, and giving them max permissions (temporary, with a copied off version of the folders to revert to), and no dice.

I noticed that the “update” button immediately changes the permissions of the World of Warcraft folder under program files. I’ve tried upping the permissions right before and after hitting update, but either way it still complains.

This is clearly a bug in battle.net or wow, not just a system permissions issue.

Note: for me, wow classic install works, but not the BC install.

I’m on Linux through wine. Yea I know that could be the issue, but given the vast quantity of windows (and mac) users complaining above, I highly doubt it.
Permissions on the wow folder after I hit “update” and it resets them: “rwsrwsr-t”

You can add my name to the growing list of people who can not log into the game due to this continuous update loop. It’s been almost a week now. Tried uninstall/reinstall battlenet. Rebooted my computer. Hell, I’m ready to sacrifice a goat if it would help.

Blizzard, please give an update.
Have you found out what’s causing it?
Have you any advice on what to do to fix it?

SO going on 15 days and no update. Only response I’ve seen is dealing with permissions, which isn’t the issue MOST of us are having. I guess with all the sexual assault issues they have bigger fish to fry right now.

The looping updates have stopped for me without intervention on my part, but since the loop started happening for people, I noticed when I do launch the game, the normal “connecting to server” message comes up…and then the game totally freezes for a good 30 seconds while it displays whichever character I had selected at the time I last logged off. Sometimes the screen is mostly black save for faint outlines of things such as the ‘change server’ button and the Shadowlands logo, other times the character background renders but no character, and still other times the character appears but is frozen.

So, on a whim today, I was like, hm, let’s do a scan and repair. So I did that, and then got the error that says to repair the installation, and so on a few times. I eventually decided to launch directly and it says that the entire game is corrupt.

At that point I had to uninstall the game AND Battle.net, even double-cleaning with trusted registry and file cleaning tools, verified that all apps are running as administrator, quintuple checked exceptions and allowances on my antivirus, cleared game cache, ran without addons…none of it is fixing it. Once that first character loads, switching to others is totally fine and the game functions as normal.

It all started as soon as this looping thing began happening on my client.

Help!

Honestly that weird freezing could be the result of faulty hardware, like maybe your harddrive is writing bad data cuz its dying.

Echoing that the issue hasn’t stopped for me – I’ve tried all the solutions presented, and it just keeps the loop. Hoping for an update soon.

Heads up that @BlizzardCS on Twitter they are saying that the fix went out last week with updates to the battle.net app.
Don’t shoot. I’m just the messenger.

Still not “fixed” for me

Yes, definitely not fixed. Don’t know if it will help, but I only started having this problem since a few days ago, not almost two weeks ago.

Even after Tuesday maintenance still can’t update. Can not uninstall, nor scan & repair.

just wanted to throw my name in the hat. literally was fine last night. logged on this evening and it tried updating and it’s in the never ending loop.

Been a week since this issue started for me. the game keeps scanning and never updates. Tried all the recommended fix except Deleting everything and re installing . Any fixes yet ?

Just wanted to post I’m having the same issue since last week or possibly the week before. When I start the Bnet app, it goes into updating wow and the ptr for sure I know. I also have HS and classic installed, but I don’t let it get far enough to see if it’s trying to update those as well.

I haven’t had any issues logging in.

When I log out, if I stay in the app long enough it will update again.

If it’s the tweet dated 15 November:

This one.
Sorry I don’t have TL3 to link.

You would think an issue affecting this many people’s ability to log in would be a higher priority fix. Kinda puts a damper on their time-played metrics.

Just wanted to update this. hopefully a tech person will see this and maybe there is something to it.

i ran into this problem for the first time last night. I had uninstalled two games to make room and after i was done i ran CCleaner’s Registry Cleaner along with doing a SFC /Scannow and then running a trim command for my M.2. i dont know if any of them messed something up but who know. I managed to fix the problem by just reinstalling both Battle.net and World Of Warcraft. kinda crazy how just uninstalling a games and a registry cleaner would mess something up that had nothing to do with both Bnet and WoW.

Tried reinstalling hearthstone. Still loops updates. Tried reinstalling the launcher. Still loops updates. I’m not reinstalling wow until hearthstone stops looping because there’s no reason to waste time and bandwidth fixing an issue with a 73 gig game when a 5 gig game has the same issue. Idk what to do at this point.

this is getting aggravating now, does Blizzard even care? This issue has NOT been fixed. Jesus…It’s been almost a month now…
