Authenticator Changes

I only just read the post at the top of this forum.

I’m a bit confused. I’ve had the physical authenticator attached to my account since they existed. It’s old, but still works.

With this new change, does this mean I can’t use it anymore and I need to get the mobile one instead?

Sorry, I re-read the post and still am not quite sure if this relates to the one I have, or some sort of current one that isn’t the physical one.

Is it difficult to do? I’m a little bit older and don’t particularly like change. Makes me a bit nervous just thinking about it. I’m also not that great on a phone, but I do have one.

Hope you all had a great Christmas and stay safe for the New Year, thank you in advance for any help.

Yea they made me get rid of my physical authenticator and get the app and I hate it. The app just keeps sending notifications to my phone and bothering me. There was nothing wrong with my authenticator.

You have to go to the app store and download the app to connect it to your account.

No, but the battery life of the physical fob is over it’s stated limit of roughly 7 years, and will likely fail at some point.

In account management you could probably change it to learn your most frequent logins, avoiding have the reauthenticate every time.

:flushed:? If this doesn’t affect the physical authenticator, then I’m putting it back on. I thought the email said I needed to remove it.

As Kozzae quoted, the physical authenticator is not impacted by this change.

I’m not sure what you mean, Wreez. Who “made you” get rid of the physical unit? There is no requirement for you to do so unless the battery died, or it otherwise no longer works.

I got an email:

If you don’t migrate, your authenticator will be removed from your account and you’ll no longer be protected or able to use the authenticator app to approve login requests. We’ll reset your password and send details on setting up a new password to your email address.

You should be fine in leaving it on. We do caution against the physical Authenticator though, only because they are fairly old at this point and we’re well past the expected battery life on the unit. It is much easier to remove and update the Authenticator while there is still life in the physical one, then trying to do it if it dies on you.

Also, if the mobile unit keeps sending notifications to your phone, you may want to update your security settings to not ask each time you log in.

If you turn that off as long as nothing changes (i.e. you are still logging in from the same place, etc… it shouldn’t ask you each time).

Thank you so much for all the responses.

I like to think of my old authenticator as a boss. It even got completely dunked into coffee a couple years after I got it, and it still works. But I have noticed the last couple of years, sometimes I need to push the button a few times for it to give me the code so I’m sure the battery is definitely nearing the end of it’s life. I had that thought years ago though and it’s somehow still going haha.

Given all this, it’s probably best I just use this new thing.

Will my account be at risk during this transition? From what I read I’d need to remove it, then add the new thing. When I do this what happens with my characters that have full bags/extra slots for authenticator. Do I lose whatever items are in the extra slots? Sorry everyone, as I said I don’t like change, I overthink everything too much.

You would, but the items either should be just hidden, moved to normal inventory, or just mailed back to you. Those slots came from also having SMS protect though, so if you have that, it should be easier to switch over to the bnet app with the new authenticator. Then you would want to follow the migration instructions in the sticky post.

Is there a way to find out if I ever set up SMS protect? I looked in account info but can’t see SMS protect anywhere but my number is in there and verified.

If I understand this correctly, I have 2 options. I wait until after the 5th and then just DL the mobile authenticator app - completely avoiding having to migrate anything and being able to complete this in one single step (2 if you count removing the old physical key fob).

Or… I download the one that is about to go away, then migrate over to the new one - which seems a bit more difficult for me.

Account management under Privacy and Communications. It’s an option just under security, the link above.

But if you have the 4 extra slots in your main bag, you have SMS protect enabled already. It should be the same number on the phone you are using, assuming the phone is capable of running the app.

There is no need to download the old standalone authenticator app. You can simply use the Battle.net app as your authenticator.

I have an old authenticator device and had the same question. I was told it would continue to function regardless of what they did with the cell phone apps the only caveat being that the battery will someday die. However, in the thread I was on, there was a response that someone else came up with a way to install a new battery. I’ll search for that solution when it becomes a problem.

I would not trust it. They’re designed to destroy themselves if opened or tampered with.

If you’re willing to go to that much trouble, what’s the issue swapping to the battle.net app authenticator?

Well, if it is destroyed it will be about as useful as it would be if the battery is dead so there’s no harm in trying. As for the app, I have an old clamshell cell phone which can’t accommodate it. I consider ‘smart’ devices anathema but that’s just me. If the occasion occurs that my authenticator no longer works, it will be a moot point whether to remove the authentication from my account xor stop my subscription. Your mileage may vary.

You set up SMS on your account? You might have problems at login to account management otherwise.

Unless you have the bnet app dont try replacing the battery it will juske things more difficult.
