Are PVE servers bad?

Meh the world is dangerous enough as it is in Classic.

I prefer to play the video game different than others.

Oh the horror!

I'll do world PvP like we
used to at Southshore
And battlegrounds...
big wars are kinda my thing
but gankfests and
camping aren't
so I'll stay PvE

I think the only PvP
MMO I liked
is PlanetSide

TLDR; ‘Big Wars’ don’t happen organically on a PvP server like people think. PvE servers can provide your PvP fix.

PvE servers are fine.

I play on both so I have no dog in this silly fight some of you stirred up, but PVE servers eventually became the most popular choice after years of frustration and migration from the WPvP experience. BGs and arenas also filled the PvP itch for many.

Somebody just mentioned ‘big wars’…

This is such a fantasy for people who roll on WPvP (don’t get all triggered, I used to be one of them) but organized ‘big wars’ are only accomplished when highly coordinated by larger guilds, and even then, disruptors try to mess that up (naturally, and I’m fine with that).

ED had some great runs in this regard but that was a RP-PvP server, and again, required committed guilds to organize some of those ‘big wars’ that I think people assume occur organically on any PvP server.

Not bad, just different. I personally like PvP as it’s a more immersive experience (head on a swivel and all that), but could see why others do not like it. My Alliance toons are on a PvE server because it’s already bad enough that they are Alliance- I don’t need the far superior, more attractive Horde characters giving me corpse runs to boot.

Uh… there are like 3 to 1 PVP to PVE servers on WoW classic right now before they added in Warmode every single big server was a PVP server.

True. When the Legendary Cloak quest required having to participate in a Battleground back in MOP I remember there where some PvErs madder than wet hens at having to do PvP. And then there was the whole kerfuffle on Timeless Isles where players claimed they became flagged PvP because of people using a censer (spelling) to deliberately get them flagged.

I can understand their wrath because they had signed up on a PvE realm because they didn’t want to PvP but now found themselves having to deal with PvP against their wishes.

Me, I bite the bullet and do what BGs need to be done all the while trying not to punch my computer screen as my blood pressure rises which is why I don’t play on a PvP realm.

Its a personal preference I played on a pvp server back in vanilla I dont have the time to deal with that anymore so I moved on from pvp servers.

Like when the Southshore ninja guards yell surprise jump out of the bushes and you’re dead because they have 30% move speed.

PvE servers are great, because PvP servers and streamer servers took the vast majority of the toxic parts of the playerbase.

There are still the occasional bad apples, but Mankrik has been exceptional compared to any other online gaming community I’ve been in in the last decade. Compared to Herod or Faerlina it’s just insane how much less terrible the people who play here are.

I rolled on a PvP because I felt like that was the more traditional WoW experience. I don’t gank or have any ego about it.

But this thread is kind of making me want to re-roll on PvE. (Though I’d end up with a name like “Jizanthapus” or something – just kidding, that’s taken.)

Played pvp server back in vanilla. Rolled pve server this time around. Will never look back.

Uh…I know. Uh…just like in Vanilla, there were even more in the first two years.

Blizzard eventually merged and eliminated pvp servers over time as customers got tired of ganking. PvP servers were more numerous than PvE servers from 2004-2006. In 2007, the exodus from PVP servers, and creation of more PvE servers began. Retail now has no PvP servers, and it uses warfronts.

Launch 2004: 43 PvP servers, 41 PvE servers, 5 RP servers, zero rp-pvp servers

September 2005: 55 PvP servers, 44 PvE servers, 7 RP servers, 2 RP-PvP servers (ED and Maelstrom)

End of 2005: 62 PvP servers, 47 PvE servers, 7 RP servers, 5 RP-PvP servers

Leading up to warfronts: In 2017 Blizzard announced warfronts, because the play on PvP servers, despite any relative number strength to PvE servers, wasn’t the PvP of old. The PvP server ratios went WAY out of whack. In fact the only relatively balanced PvP server left was a single RP-PvP server (ED and then later WA for a bit as ED shook out, long story) The notion that ‘most’ people played PvP servers leading up to warfronts is deceptive because the state of wPvP was nothing near the level of 2005-2006. PVE server populations on single servers, were in fact, higher than PvP servers in terms of overall logins and activity. Blizzard had to help PvP by giving players what they say was the best of both worlds: everyone should try world pvp, but have the option to flag beforehand TO AVOID GETTING GANKED AT LOW LEVELS. To pretend that ganking lowbies on PvP servers wasn’t always a problem, is rather, short sighted in light of actual statistical trends, and contrary to the decision the developers made to eliminate PvP servers altogether.

2018-2019: No PvP servers. All PvE servers. But wait! Warfronts (absolutely dead in comparison to early Vanilla wpvp) which essentially is a PvE server with the ability to flag for PvP.

My theory on why Blizzard launched more PvP servers? The hype. Everyone wants to believe they will be on top, or participate in some massive noble war, but over time, the ganking ruins it. People forgot why they left the first time. Maybe new players think it will be like Fortnite for the first time. Either way, people missed the vanilla days of PvP. Nostalgia. Or. Gankers get to relive being a major PITA and scream carebear to the uninitiated. Whatever floats their boat.

Already the forums are filling up with confused complaints by people who got ganked, or want better balance, or (insert whatever scapegoat for getting wiped in PvP here).

A few of us remember PvP, enjoy PvP, and know what is coming. So many others…they will be jumping to a PvE server, just like post vanilla, especially because this time around there are players who REALLY know their classes and will dominate pvp at a level the early vanilla pioneers couldn’t.

What my ex brother in law once told me. “You won’t ever get the vanilla experience if you don’t play on a pvp server.”

SS vs TM. Getting killed and ganked 10 times entering SM? MMM, getting feared when trying to go from SM GY to Sm lib? mmm!!!

Trying to quest in STV but a level 55 mounted horde is ganking everyone? OH YEAA!!!

I kid but those are all true. But I also too gank and ruin hordes escort quests when I get the chance  it’s full circle! And when I hit 50 I’m going to VIETNAM STV and dropping a few horde.

WoW PvP is inherently bad just due to the way combat works. In other games, I have the opportunity to outplay other people. In WoW, that’s only true if gear allows it. I can potentially take on 3 people in Battlefield, in WoW it means I should run. I want fair gameplay, which is rare. And no, unfair gameplay is not fun 90% of the time. So saying “it’s not supposed to be fair” just means it’s bad IMO.
“Red is dead” really shows the complexity of thought of people who gank a lot. I’ve always played on a PvP server just because not being able to attack doesn’t make much sense. But I only attack when people seem to deserve it.

Yep. I’d never consider attacking someone in the world, PVP or not. Why would I play on a server where I’m just going to have more downtime in the game that I want to play?

Before they added war mode pvp servers were top? What? Pvp servers were dying. Warmode was a way to try to save it and the game. It failed epically. I predict pvp servers will be super popular at first in classic and will die as people get frustrated and either quit or move to pve, where the community is honestly more welcoming.

It’s mindless chauvinism combined with anger that they suffered being ganked. They want to wear it as a badge of honor because they have nothing else.

For the record, I have only ever leveled on PVP servers mainly because my friends played there, and have generally always taken the philosophy that unless required for a quest or as part of a large scale pvp battle, I will generally only attack enemy faction members if they have attacked me. I have found this to be an effective strategy.

I have noticed that some people tend to get furious at me when I advocate this philosophy though. I get labeled a carebear lol. Then these same people complain about being camped. Go figure.

Not sure why so many carebears are trying to hold dear to these perversion of the gaming experience.

Seriously you need to go to a PvP server. So you get the full experience. Always being in potential danger makes you a better player.

You get the best raiders on a PvP server for this reason. A lot of this so called “ganking” does not happen. Sure you will occasionally find a higher level attracting but it’s pretty rare

People that think pve servers are good. Need to wake up and realize they are playing a joke.
