Archaeology How to get started?

I never messed with it back in the day and decided to pick it up as something to do for now I got the profession from the trainer in Stormwind and all I have is an empty book and when I got to any of the digsites I found listed online I can’t do anything.

How do I get started?

If you press k, there is a new survey button in there, you can use that spell in a digsite and it will point you in the direction of the treasure. I recommend dragging the survey button to a more convenient place than the professions tab and giving it a convenient keybind. Green means you are close, red far, yellow somewhere between.

The goal is to get fragments that you can use in the archaeology journal (also available by pressing k or going to professions tab) to complete artifacts. Have fun getting started!

Also, if you do it on a character that is an alchemist, you have a chance of finding the Vial of the Sands recipe that is used to create the Sandstone Drake mount. I recommend checking wowhead about how to do it.

Yeah but when I do that it just says I can’t use it in this area or something like that.

EDIT: There’s nothing lit up on my map at all for digsites

You have to have the Digs selected on your locator option, and they will appear as special little icons on your map, that trn into red areas when you are close.

The book they gave me is empty so how do i do that?

suggest you give this a readthrough.

Archaeology 1-800 Leveling and Collecting Strategies - Wowhead

Little tip there: If you don’t see the digsites on the zone-level maps,
make sure “Show Digsites” is checked!

Right now all I have is a bunch of grayed out symbols.

Forget the book.

Just go start digging. Once you do that, options will appear in the book.

And seriously, go read the guide. things will be a lot clearer.

I am reading the guide except it’s not letting me dig anywhere nor does the map even show area’s to dig. I even tried looking up the dig sites online and just going and spamming the button still won’t let me do anything.

I guess it’s bugged or w/e idk I’ll just find something else to do. Thanks for the help though.

What game area are you trying to dig in? There is no archeaology in either Shadowlands or Dragonflight zones.

Eastern Kingdom and Kalimdor. It says if they’re not showing to make sure they’re checked in the magnifying glass (binoculars now) and it doesn’t even show digsites as an option.

OK, I just got on to a fully trained toon and yes, you are right, the show digsite option is not displayed on the Locator list. This is obviously a bug.

I’m going to report it on the Bug Report forum but sadly without that option, you can’t see the digsite locations on your zone maps. They may show up if you are close on your minimap but since you dont know where they are, thats a bit of a pest.

So yep, until its fixed Im sorry you wont be able to do it.

I popped into Boralus and I can see digsites in the area’s near here just not in the old zones.

Edit: and it’s letting me dig here. I guess the old zones are bugged. Thank you for all your help!

Maybe a silly question, but did you learn archaeology for all the earlier expansions?

Yeah I learned all the guy in Stormwind had to offer.
Also I found this seems other people have been having the same problem Digsites not showing in Pan and other zone

it’s definitely a magnifying glass.

are you looking on the map?
because it’s on the map, not the tracker options.

I can confirm. It has been a long time since I have done archeology since maxing it.

Just went Org trainer on an alt that hasn’t touched it, trained, opened map and there are 3 dig sites available for me in Kalimdor and 3 dig sites available in EK.

Now, I cannot see any dig sites in Wrath, Pandaria and I think, I’m not 100% certain, that’s because of this characters skill, once I hit a certain level they should pop up, again, it’s been years since I touched Archeology. I wish they would bring it “back” to being current, DF would have been the perfect setting for regular Archeology.

you need to train separately to dig in other zones

Yeah, that’s what I figured, maybe “skill” wasn’t the right word. I trained all I could on a level 70 and dug up 6 fragments and hearthed! Totally not interested in doing arch from scratch on that particular toon. This thread has got me considering going back to old zones though and maybe trying to fill in some blanks!
