So, why is it impossible for you to wait until the initial rush has passed and the population of those zones is not so high as to cause server instability?
Laeric: Fesz: Ðavyjones: Fateweaver:Which is why I specified TBC and Wrath. Given the substantial growth in subs immediately following Vanilla 2 additional zones didn’t make a difference in spreading out the population. At times it was messy, but, again, was not unplayable.
How many players were starting the game all a the same time during those xpacs? You are comparing things that are not remotely comparable.
What could happen at the launch of Classic will be unlike anything WoW has ever experienced. That’s why there needs to be sharding and dynamic spawning. I for one am glad that they are planning to prevent the problems that could happen. If that means some #nochanges goons don’t play at launch, good. They can level later when its ‘like vanilla’ one less person in the rush to 60.
Tell us all why those who want the convenience of reduced. Competition that sharding provides cannot wait until the initial rush is over.
Because it’s not even about the “reduced competition.” It’s about server stability. It’s about being able to actually play the damn game without lag spikes and constant DC’s and login qeues.
NONE of that is good for the game. I’ll take one diehard anti-sharder’s hurt feelings over an unplayable game.

Because I’d be literally the only one waiting? Duh? Also there’s no telling how long that wait would be.

Yet somehow its ok for those who do not want sharding to wait.

I never told an anti-sharder to wait.

Legion and BfA are the only 2 expacs i did not experience at launch.
If all the others coukd manage just fine with smaller and fewer starting areas then, and server stability is not an issue.
Especially since blizzard has already stated they have the capacity to dial up server limits.

MOP and WOD did not “manage fine.” I remember severe lag, constant crashes, overcrowded zones…
Ion already said why they’re considering sharding. It’s because they’re worried about a ton of people trying out Classic, and then a bunch leaving…leading to empty servers. That’s the reason.
So what we’re dealing with here is a dishonest company that hasn’t put out a good title in the fantasy genre in about a decade… great
Laeric, not sure why you liked my last post. I’m pointing out that your reasoning is wrong. I’m merely repeating what Ion said at Blizzcon.
My view of the situation? It’s a very unique and…weird circumstance. Usually when a company launches an mmorpg they expect the playerbase to grow. In this case they’re expecting it to shrink. When has that ever been the case? So how would I deal with it? Tell players to deal with it. If the expectation is that these people are going to quit anyway, why try to accommodate them by drastically changing one of the core tenets of the game? I would contend the type of players who are going to play and enjoy Classic long-term are accepting and even wanting of the kind of gaming experience created by a horde of players all jammed together.
Thank you for the proof and totally agree!

I liked it because I also agree with Ion’s reasons. There’s more than one reason for sharding. I can’t just go and list every single one of them every time I make a post; that’s not very practical.

Yeah well the problem is we’ve seen blizzards song and dance with sharding before. Look at rp servers in retail.
Many of us fear that once it’s in, it won’t be leaving

I played on RP servers on retail. Trust me, I know. I’ll still take sharding over the hell that’ll be unleashed without it.
One of the prime potential causes of why this time is special: combined subs
But bring that up at peril of drawing wrath from retail players who are happy to get the additional game at no additional cost, despite the damage it will do for the gameplay and community that are coming back to the game specifically to pay for classic.

What damage? Those kids will be gone within a fortnight, and the sharding meant to mitigate their presence will be turned off.

Literal “hell” that you could completely avoid by simply not log in at release.

Yes well if they don’t remove sharding they start bleeding subs. That is thr problem.
I want classic.
I want classic to succeed.
But i don’t trust blizzard with sharding at all.
And if sharding goes permanent you could use it to seriously screw up the economy. Need lotus or thorium? Flood applicable zones with bodies and watch it shard.
No Buenos. Permanent sharding = me and many others unsubbing.

But will it? As we’ve seen blizzard has been very open to breaking their word about sharding.

That’s unacceptable. Period. If a game’s unplayable at launch, it has failed.

Good lord, you just got done agreeing with Matcauthon about RP servers (that Blizzard says one thing and then does something completely different, yet you think that they will just turn it off after 20 days?
And holy crap, now we have moved that dial in this thread to 20 levels and 20 days? Good GRIEF.
