Anime, thoughts?

But not a bad dub. As far as 90s dubs go, Ninja Scroll is pretty decent. I prefer subs generally, but dubs have come a loooong way since the 90s and stuff that I mentioned before like Angel Cop (which is so hilariously bad it’s good).

Some dubs are arguably better in a regional context when they modify the dialogue and include region-specific slang to make it make more sense for that audience. The English dub of Prison School is freaking hilarious for example. Stuff can definitely get lost in translation via dubbing, too, which a lot of earlier anime dubs suffer from.

Cowboy Bepop’s intro was so good though. The music was, of course, great, and the animation was super stylized.

Also, I should add. Ghost in the Shell was a pretty great show too. Kinda complicated for the teenage crowd, but the characters were cool enough.

Ghost in the Shell is a masterpiece. It’s my fav cyberpunk-ish anime, along with Bubblegum Crisis and Battle Angel Alita.

One show I think gets forgotten from early Toonami is Wolf’s Rain. The OST was good, and it often got (rightfully) overshadowed by FMA back when it aired.

I still can’t watch Wolfs Rain.

I’m just not strong enough even if I know its not THAT sad of a ending if you really think about it

2010-2020 was a decade of masterpieces. Stein’s Gate, SAO (S1 was pretty good, after that… meh.), AOT, Kill La Kill, Dragonball Super, and a hundred trash isekai…but a few were good, admittedly. Dumpster fires can be fun to watch.

It’s a pretty harsh reality though. Definitely a sad story.

Have to say, Robert Rodriguez’s live action version was perfectly casted and did very well condensing the first three mangas into one movie. Hope the rumors of him doing a sequel is real. Man has to use his Spy Kid’s money some how, since his kiddos are now or close to being adults lol.

But it was worth it. We didn’t just get one side of the tale, we got both sides equally that made it impact that much more.

Yeah I was quite confused because the manga has a different ending.

Perhaps it was one of those instances where the manga comes later rather than before an anime or video game. Like how Kingdom Hearts got manga retellings of the games after the games came out.

Oh god I probably still have my copies of those

I really enjoyed the live action film too, though now that there’s talk of a sequel, I wish they hadn’t crammed so much into the first movie and instead made it a trilogy. The entire motorball subplot could’ve been it’s own movie.

If you really want your soul crushed into oblivion, watch Grave of the Fireflies.

You do have to give him credit. He kept the creator updated, and at the same time had Edward Norton be in his place and rejected all of his rewrites. But, yeah. The hole subplot and mystery of Motorball could easily fill a 2hr window alone lol.

Oh god. My high school government class had us watched this. We used a block schedule, so ~2hrs in a classroom. The class started off with excitement…and ended with despair and silence.

That’s one of those films where at the end I wished I didn’t have the ability to feel feelings anymore. I had a similar reaction to The End of Evangelion.

I need to watch this series still. It’s been a while, so I don’t really recall the story. This weekend might be the weekend?

(Is it a series, or a set of movies? I very rarely watch anime-style movies. Last one was Dragon Ball Super: Broly and before that, it was the Psycho Pass movie.)

See that one I don’t feel anything with. I just think “You dumb kid” and I know that isn’t usually how folks react to the film.

If folks like it, cool. Ain’t knocking yall down just because I didn’t care for the movie.

So, the original Neon Genesis Evangelion is a 26 episode series, with two followup films, Evangelion Death: True, and The End of Evangelion. The films were basically made because people didn’t understand wtf happened at the end of the series.

I will warn you right now - the series deals heavily with personal and interpersonal emotional issues such as depression. If you are even remotely feeling down, do not watch it… I made the mistake of binging it when I was at a low point in my life and to say it didn’t help is an understatement. It is very very good though, despite serious budget issues and inconsistent production values.

There has also been a complete four-film reboot of the series that is absolutely beautifully animated (the most recent one came out in 2021, 9 years after the previous one), but differs significantly in plot to the original series and films. The first film is basically a recap of the first several episodes of the series, and then has significant plot differences from the 2nd film onward. It’s definitely worth watching though and still makes sense if you haven’t seen the originals. I’m pretty sure all 4 films are still on Amazon Prime for free if you have that.

I’ll leave this here because I love it. Jpop artist Hikaru Utada made 4 original songs that play at the end credits of each movie, and all of them have lyrics directly related to the films. This is a fan-made video for the first movie’s ending song “Beautiful World” (he has them for the other 3 films as well, but they are spoilery). It’s fantastic but definitely elicits emotions.

Side tangent. I just think its cute that Hikaru can just grab 90s or 2000s kids by the heart instantly with Simple and Clean.

Try to fight it all you can. You know the words. You’re gonna sing along.

This is the proper way to criticize entertainment/art/media.

It’s like watching a Marvel film after seeing a meme/spoiler. For example… this:

Totally took me out of the moment. But oh well. That’s not to say the movie was good or bad, I genuinely didn’t care for most Marvel movies. I stopped relating to the characters and fell off the wagon early on.

Never really got into but more of a horror fan myself and while yes anime does have horror series they don’t hit the same.
