Anime, thoughts?

It’s in a weird limbo. We get things like Castlevania (yes, it is US based studio animated, mainly Power House Productions) and Arcane on one side leaning into what should be brought into adult animation. While shows like Big Mouth and Little Demon are in the middle for just shutting the brain off and laughing at silly dumb situations that can be very good to very bad viewing. And on the other side… Velma, Super Drag, Paradise PD, The Royals, Clone High (revival)… eh… enough said here.

I love Anime as a film production, but carrying over the typical tropes/artstyle into video games is a massive hit or miss for me.

Chibi ish I can’t really get into. Games styled like FFXIV with similarly matched “anime dialogue” are cringe to me. I can take the old style WoW Dialogue “We…Are…Here!” Type cringe way better.

There are exceptions. DBZ: Budokai Tenkaichi and Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm are fantastic fighting gamess. Tales of Abyss is anothet gem that succeeds using Anime style, dialogue and tropes. Tales of Vesperia as well.

A lot of other games adopting typical “Anime Style” features fall flat or are juat cringe to me though.

Least you get shows like Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss that are just off doing their own thing and just being unapologetically itself lol. I get why some folks might cringe a bit at it but I think its a fun series.

Honestly any series that handles multi limbed characters so well gets props from me. That stuff is not easy.

If Xmen97 taught me anything, there is an animation style I have been watching to return.

That show is still so neat how they get the same vibe of the og show while going bonkers in some shots like its Marvel Vs Capcom.

I love and hate Vizzy’s art and writing. It is either top tier, or it suddenly feels like High Guardian Spice level very little in between. Though, I will give her credit. Getting Richard Horvitz to sing, and not just sing, get his own gimmick on it and enjoy it as well is one hell of a risk and reward that paid off.

Closest thing I get to anime is Final Fantasy games… which isn’t really anime.

Back in the day I liked pokemon. I’m typically not a fan of all the grunting and weird sounds the characters tend to make… especially the girl characters. This is very present in Final Fantasy too and it drives me up the walls. I just don’t get why they do that.

Idk about the series but the movie that got me interested was the 1993 one and it was definitely dubbed so…

That would be the OVA, I think Orion had the original rights for distribution and had a contract with the studio to not have any type of localization in it, just a straight translation and assisted in hand picking the VAs for the dub. Which worked well for it cause the dialog in sub / dub was straight to the point before any action kicked in.

As well the same for Wicked City as well.

Fair. Alls I know is that I wasn’t reading my movie (which is best) and that it was good times.

Meh a lot of my criticism is just very minor little things. I still like watching them improve over time. That and I just like Brandon Rogers comedy style so I wasn’t surprised lol

I know that for shows, they sometimes leave in the original VA’s grunts and groans for dubs to save on costs for Voice Actors casted for the dubs. I know that Saint Saiya and Cyborg 009 revival dubs got blasted a bit cause the American voices did not match any of the grunts and groans during the fights.

I honestly don’t know how voice actors and directors do all those silly noises and somehow keep a straight face

Cuz oh boy. You hear it out of context? My brain instantly starts giggling like a 12 year old

I know that the guy who plays Goku has passed out a few times from the power up scenes. Which is, hey great dedication, but… jeebus man you do need to breath as well.

I’ve venture to say the true “anime bad” crowd is the same crowd who didn’t like Saturday morning cartoons either. (Speed Racer was fun.)

Most simply dont care for the media. It didn’t really hit mainstream in the US until like… AOT S3? (THat’s when it felt like “this is different” to me.) Not that it wasn’t gaining traction before then, but it was mostly down to Sailor Moon and the Dragonball franchise. But DBZ got big in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Then Saturday night’s with Toonami sowed the seeds by showing some classics, like Inuyasha and Cowboy Bepop. It took a few juggernauts to break it open the floodgates. One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, FMA:B, Code Geass, etc. And shows like SAO and AOT caused a massive surge of interest, and flooded the marketplace.

For me, I absolutely love seeing professional athletes show their nerdy side. You know these people exist everywhere, and it’s cool to see them have fun with it today – because it was riddled for so long.

This actually sounds kind of hilarious.

Can’t forget about The Big O. Which was bigger hit here than in Japan lol, some reason having the Batman Animated Series New Art Deco style mixed with Anime style art and noir theme with mechs triggered with a large portion of viewers.

I remember nothing of The Big O except “man that robot looks awesome”

I was a tween. I was just “ooo pretty lights” lol

I loved Big O’s ending. It took me some time to understand what i was watching. You didn’t get that with spongebob antics.

The ultimate Power Point Presentation made as an intro. Catch them with showing everything and nothing all at once.

Edit: Also, I think that is how a lot of 90s anime caught people. The redone intro triggered something and we just focused in on it until it was too late.

Sure I love DB/DBZ’s original intro, but tween and teenage me will forever love Rock the Dragon intro.
