While the song for KH did slap and slap hard the emd game completion cinematic for KH2 slapped harder. That hit you in the feels
“Anime horror” is more psychological. And that’s still really hard to do. I’d call it more “spooky” than horror. American Horror films tend to be more practical and feel more realistic, I guess?
I hate jump scares. I think they’re cheap tricks. But suspense and anticipation freaks out me like nothing else.
Like don’t get me wrong. There are pieces of media out there where I would be way meaner to fans of it. A lotta stuff tho is just meh whatever. “I’m not the audience for it, big whoop.”
That and sometimes stuff is overhyped. Grave of the Fireflies and the dog girl from FMA were so talked about that I just feel nothing when I see them now.
I say this as a fan of Devilman Crybaby. A show that KNOWS veterans of the lore ( all 5 of us ) know what happens. It even says at the start with Ryo going “What are you crying for? You knew they were going to die.”
100% agree to all that. American horror also tends to be more torture corn these days than actual horror. Give me poltergeist (80s) version and that horror every day of the week.
I recommend Junji Ito if you like horror and like reading manga. Uzumaki and Tomie are both great, psychological horror manga.
I mentioned Perfect Blue earlier which I would describe as a psychological horror anime, though maybe not “horror” in the sense that most people think of. Paprika is another by the same director (Satoshi Kon) that I would describe as psychological horror. Both excellent films.
I think it’s “first exposure” type of event. Like, I pity the fools who think SAO was great. SAO was great in S1, and the elf arc was genuinely terrible. Gun Gale was pretty fun though.
FMA:B’s dog girl was like “i’ve never known a character to do this.”
While not well known, I absolutely loved Psycho Pass’s ending to the first arc. Because it didn’t betray the stakes and rules of the world/story. And then the S1 ending was just…
I pictured Grand Blue in my mind. WAAAAAY different story lol.
I will give em a check out this weekend and let you know the results. Not too dismiss they are probably good movies sadly anime just can’t match the facial and emotion reactions IRL acting can. For example alien the first movie where none of the actors knew about the chest burster about to happen. Those are all 100% real reactions and that’s what gets me into the story.
Yeah I totally get that. Konosuba is one that I felt was ridiculously overhyped. It’s funny, don’t get me wrong, but people make it seems like it’s the absolutely most hilarious and original thing ever to exist, and I was like “meh, it’s ok.”
I enjoy anime… watched Cat Planet Cuties recently.
Satoshi Kon wanted to make Perfect Blue a live-action movie originally, but had to “settle” for anime due to budgetary constraints.
When you watch it, take into account the time it was made. It was the early 90’s, most people had only a super-basic understanding of the internet, and not everyone owned a computer.
The movie deals with Mima, an aspiring pop idol who is pressured by her agents into becoming an actress. She finds a blog site (remember those) set up by a fan with very disturbingly specific details about her everyday life. The film deals with stalking and the exploitation of young pop idols and it’s “horror” in the way that it’s realistically disturbing if you think about it in a real-world context.
It’s one of my favorite films in general, not just anime. I don’t want to overhype it, but I really like it.
I legitimately love this anime. I didn’t know what to expect given the silly title but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a lot of fun.
I agree with this. I think it’s important to not take the show seriously though. Just turn off your brain and let it ride.
I can tolerate some seriously trash shows this way. If it survives the 3-Episode Rule, then why not. I’ve still dropped shows after their plot stalls out, but Ep. 6 or Ep. 7’s tend to be the end of the line for shows executed poorly. (Source material is usually good. The anime production just didn’t live up to the source material.)
In short, “turn your brain off” fun, is a nice escape while you wait for the season’s juggernauts to air. And saving some goodies for a rainy day. Like I saved Hell’s Paradise for a lull, and hotdamn I want S2. I’m still sitting on Demon Slayer, post Train arc. And I have AOT’s final season and movie to go.
Side note, I’m pleasantly surprised by Train to the End of the World. My only complaint is that I wish the large-scale background art was more of a Studio Ghibli style. But I’m thoroughly impressed by the story. Probably by design, it feels like you’re going along for the ride with the cast.
Its like how the movie Rock and Rule came up with an idea for a video game basically back in the late 70s.
I absolutely enjoy a lot of shows that people think are trash but are my guilty pleasures. Ecchi harems and the like.
Queen’s Blade, Monster Musume, Highschool DxD (the 1st and 2nd season, it went off the rails after that if it was ever on them)…
…Agent Aika, lol.
I like a lot of that stuff.
Oh! Speaking of horror, Highschool of the Dead is one of my favs too. The first 4-5 episodes are fantastic, then it devolves into harem nonsense in the second half (still fun though imo). Might be worth checking out for horror fans. It’s a zombie apocalypse show if it wasn’t apparent from the title.
My friend thinks Ero-manga Sensei is the greatest thing ever. I’ll let him hold that opinion, it’s pretty fun. Domestic Girlfriend too. We somehow couldn’t convince his girlfriend to not watch Prison School…uncensored too. She was a major degen too.
But, without a question, the hardest we’ve ever laughed was when we were searching for diamonds in the rough. We stumbled across “Pretty Derby.” We were yelling “Cat girl or Horse girl? CAt girl, or Horse girl?” – The first subtitles popped up: “Horse Girls.” Never have I laughed so hard. I nearly passed out. He couldn’t breath. 5min of laughter. We replayed that 5sec and it started all over again. Then the show immediately tried to explain why Horse Girls exist, but Horse Boys didn’t – we couldn’t handle it. The lore of that show is wild too. The races turned out to be based on real events. The MC of S1… we joked that the real horse that MC was based from literally died IRL because the show was so bad. We would literally count all the carrots in the scene and background. We made that show into an experience.
And yes, it was a mobile game ad/show. That’s what makes it legendary to us.
- The real horse died while the show was airing.
- It was an ad for a mobile game.
- It had legitimately good animation and art themes.
- It had actual plot with realistic stakes.
- It wasn’t even on anyone’s radar; it was our special show.
Lol, I’ve heard of that but never seen it. It sounds fantastic
It’s certainly not a show I’d recommend. You need to watch it with the intention of making a joke out of it. I promise you’ll enjoy it more that way.
Same with Muv-Luv Alternative. It’s based on a visual novel. The first episodes are insanely cool. And then it just… it’s a different show after that. It you want to be thoroughly disappointed, give it a shot! Seriously, it’s more disappointing than Boruto whenever they’re rehashing old characters’ stories.
I raise you Ikki Tousen as well.
In all honesty, Ikki and DxD actually have pretty damn good plots for the long run, and well “plots” for the short run as well lol. I think the team who animated The Slayers and Half Dragon did both Ikki and DxD (guessing based on the fighting animation in these three are near the same and sometimes even better then these modern shojen animes lol)
Might be why I have a hate love relationship with Boruto. Absolutely can’t stand the plot or new cast (outside of Metal Lee, he cool. Shy and Stage Frighten Rock Lee spawn is a win). But the fights, they are next level for such a half assed show lol. You can tell they worked on the fights first and hand to make up some make-ship story to lead up to them in the end.
That was my whole world as a kid but now I don’t remember anything. They turned into wolves except for one character that turned into a flower.
I never understood that though. Were they actually wolves, or was the show just representing them as humans for the sake of helping the audience relate back to the broader plot? Or were they actually shape shifting between scenes lol
It’s been so many years that I genuinely don’t remember much anymore.
