Anime, thoughts?

I used to disparage both Anime just because it looked “kiddish” and silly. I’ve come to find out on a few anime shows I’m craving more. I’m starting to notice the criteria for which makes a good one or mediocre. In some ways I’m discovering better fantasy stories after rewatching my fave fantasy movies over and over. Trying to find high fantasy shows that are really good is difficult.

There are shows that say they are anime but just seem to be animation - good ones too. But some have sort of stop-motion look too … I’m confused on the difference. What are your thoughts on anime?

I know WoW is not anime like FF, but there seems to be more depth of emotion in the anime medium than in WoW.

It’s a media category, not a genre. Anything you could imagine being a tv show or movie probably has an anime equivalent in tone, content, and quality.

It used to be specified as animated shows specifically from Japan, but the lines have been blurred in the last two decades or so.

FF isn’t anime, it’s Japanese.

I can dig some anime but it’s mostly just the cheesy Americanized stuff. Dragon Ball, Ninja Scroll, that kind of thing. I’m not much of a fan of the ones that take themselves too seriously and these days it’s just such an over saturated genre that I don’t find anything in particular to be unique or appealing.

The anime obsession in the west has peaked I’m hoping.

Okay, ty. I was getting confused on what I’ve been watching a few shows - one I know is anime for sure … I think. lol

It’s a matter of some debate. Some people will insist that only animated shows made by Japanese companies count as anime, whereas something like The Last Airbender that’s clearly made in a similar style but by an American company is not.

It’s not terribly important at the end of the day. End result is that animation has pretty fully emerged as a legitimate form of media, rather than being relegated to children’s entertainment, and anime probably helped with that a lot - though I’m no social researcher so that’s just my opinion lol

I like some, but it’s super niche for me. I can’t just open up a random anime and get hooked by it and I often cringe at the dialogue, but some have nice stories and messages that make it worth while, like Cowboy Bebop, for instance.

Some seem like a adult cartoons but have really deep storytelling. So, I guess it doesn’t matter if I like them. Just wondered what others thought of them.

Yep, that’s something anime has always done well with.

In recent years American media has started following suit with shows like Arcane and Invincible.

I’ve seen a few over the years, some good, some bad.

I generally prefer to read the manga (the comics that a good number of anime are adapted from).

Anime just means animation. To liken it to cartoons is just ignorance. There are animes designed for all ages and mature audiences as well. I tend to personally find the VAs to be better at acting since they just have to worry about their voice.

Arcane is what got me on my search. That really is a good show. Now I’ve been rethinking my stance on graphic novels and manga.

Fantasy anime! Berserk is aces but uh mmm… yikesy. Much yike, many yike, tread carefully.

Warcraft is deeply entwined with the state of Anime:

BFA: We destroyed the world’s source of Anime by killing the last tentacle monster.

Shadowlands: We restored the flow of Anime to the world.
(Serious note, trigun is like the only anime I liked lol)

As a nearly level 40 adult male IRL, I’ve nothing against “anime” with regards to if it’s for kids or adults or whatever…but for it to even have a smidgen of a chance to hold my interest, it has to very much be adult in nature…and no not “that” kind of adult but something kiddos should absolutely not be watching.

I like my entertainment with the gloves off. Bad words, violence, sex…I want the creator(s) to not hold back in their artistic vision to tell the story in the most authentic and visceral way and if that means kiddos and pearl clutching boomers are excluded…oh well. Castlevania, for example, is a recent anime I watched and thoroughly enjoyed and imagine I would enjoy anything else from those that made it if kept to the same vision.

I’m very much a casual though in the anime space. I don’t have the foggiest clue about genres and types. I know (I think) the difference between subbed and dubbed and that’s about it and I’m fine with that. At the end of the day, all that matters is if I enjoy it and if I do, I watch it and if I don’t, I accept it isn’t for me and let those that like it have at it.

That’s good! There’s a lot of bias against graphic novels and comics but they’re capable of fantastic storytelling.

I started watching Battlestar Galactica and it reminded me of Japanese anime.

I love anime. Inuyasha and Bleach were my favs growing up. I was already into anime when I married my husband who is a huge weeb. He got me into so many more. JJK, HxH, My Hero, Demon Slayer, Chainsaw Man, and a bunch of other mainstream ones as well as some more taboo ones. Just recently, I started reading the JJK manga chapters that aren’t yet animated.

I like anime and I’m proud of it

Anime and manga are broken up in different age brackets, most of what we get are things made for younger or teen age group. So there is a huge range from Pokemon to Berserk (my favorite Manga) to Love is Hard for an Otaku there is a ton of range in interesting things. Anime and the content of them are a lot like books, you have your trashy romances, pup action, funny ones and tear jerkers. WoW on the other hand is not really being written to feel any emotion other than feeling strong.

Like any type of media - I like some stories done in Anime. I dislike some. I tend to lean towards sci-fi and fantasy stuff overall. Robotech was popular when I was in high school.

WoW also lacks a central main character to follow and is more of a series of different stories from different povs.

Classic. Boondocks qualifies as “anime” for me as well. Also a great and hilarious show.
