Addon Channel Spamming - it's against TOS

I sure do.

When you break the CoC by trolling, I have the right per the CoC to flag your post. Not against the rules, sorry.

Constantly posting baseless claims without proof when asked = trolling. Berating me for disagreeing with you = trolling. Saying you are done here but continuing to post here = trolling. I think that speaks for itself.

Blizzard created the CoC, not me. I’m just another player like you.

Disagreeing with you and pointing out how you are wrong =/= insulting.

I don’t think the word derail means what you think it does. You have made baseless claims. I asked you to back them up, which you’ve refused to do. That’s not personal attacks, sorry.

Well of course, this is a public forum. I have a right to post here just as you do, provided I abide by the forum CoC.

You said that you were done before, yet you are still here. You don’t want to respond to me because you know I’m right and you can’t handle it. That’s your problem, not mine.

I have seen just today and posted screen shots of just for the death of a rare it being spammed three times (twice in fact and I was only on Mechagon for about 30 minutes in total).

The last one rare spawn I saw, there were two announcements that it wasn’t engaged, one in progress I believe, and three death notices. That is for one rare.

People asking questions on chat and they are lost because of the amount of addon spam happening.

this i agree with have it only announce the rare once what you are seeing is when someone else makes it to the rare. as the addon itself will tell you that rare has been announced recently.
i think once the rare is spotted/announced it should not say anything else about said rare until it dies.
i agree getting there to see it die is annoying but also having 9 people anouncing the same rare can be anyoing if you actually care.

These rare announcing addons aren’t anything new, and were also used back in Isle of Thunder and Timeless Isle. Addons that auto-announce things in chat are even older, things like interrupt announcers or hero/lust announcers have been around for a long time.

Like I said before, I’ll believe it when I see Blizzard confirm that it’s happening.

Most of the addons do check that someone didn’t post with that addon already. The problem is that there are currently 3 addons that are autoannouncing, because they were all written at the same time. The result is that you get a maximum of 2 hand typed announcements plus 3 automatic announcements. In addition to being informative and not selling anything (which would make it spam) it’s also not one person making the posts, so it’s also not spam.

Adding an addon channel is really not very feasible. As it is right now, channel numbers can change based on the order in which they were added. For instance, the defense channel defaults to 3 but if you set up a custom channel while you have defense deactivated, adding defense will set it to channel 4. If you added an addon channel, that would then be channel 5, but not so if you didn’t already have a 3 and a 4. Since channels are all addressed by number, everyone would have to have the right channel number to post in the right channel, and that number will vary from person to person, and even from character to character. It’s simply not a stable, reliable solution.

Most of the announcements are sent by the same people and you can certainly put them on ignore if you don’t want the messages. Then your problem is solved and the rest of us can still use the addon messages.

I also find them helpful. I’m very glad to have them. I would have caught Soundless once without the announcements.

This is a matter of your personal taste and you can already fix the problem with the existing UI by ignoring people. You’re asking that Blizzard modify the chat system (to a system that is nonstandard, btw) to make an addon channel always the same number just so you don’t have to put people on ignore.

If you don’t like it, take responsibility for that and use ignore.

Rares aren’t popping up that frequently, and even then, unless you have the attention span of a stunned goldfish, you could just keep talking past the addons. Didn’t you post earlier about how you were optimistic about the intelligence of people playing the game?

Couldn’t have said this any better. People have options, they really should make use of them. If Blizzard had any kind of issue with these, they would’ve broken them right away.

blizzard might not confirm that it is happening though. a lot of times whether they action for spam is influenced by how much it is being reported. if the addon is causing a sufficient volume of reports they may begin to action for it in those situations, without the addon specifically being banned.

also i’m with you on the question asking - how many people are asking questions in chat that aren’t about rares anyway. trade chat gets spammed incredibly harder on high pop servers than some rare spam and people still seem to use it just fine.

Missing a question because it doesn’t show on your screen isn’t reflective of anyone’s intelligence.

I am not the one who was asking the question either.

Calling out rares, addon or not, is very appreciated by most players. Myself included.

Either Blizzard reduces the insane Rare spawn timers or it has to be this way.

I have twice encountered today of people trying to have conversations or asking questions and you have addon spam right after and the question and/or conversations are lost.

Wow. That’s really convincing. You know that you can scroll up, correct? You also know that you can set up a separate chat tab that only contains whispers, right? So learn to scroll or set up a second chat tab. Oo you can also turn off NPC talk. NPC talk is actually much worse in that regard than these messages.

Again, there is already something in the UI that will fix whatever issue it is that you think this is causing, but quite frankly, if you’re claiming that even 9 identical messages (which I have never seen happen) makes conversations “disappear,” then I have to assume that you’re exaggerating for effect. That’s not how chat works. Scroll up goes back quite a ways.

NPC talk, guild chat, friend on/off alerts, etc. All are more disruptive than Rare calls.

And again, the person is just making things up. I’ve never once had a conversation disrupted because of a rare call. What a liar.

Why would I want to make a panel for whispers ? And yes people can scroll up but do you do that constantly while you are in the game just in case you missed something because of addon spam ? I doubt most people do that.

I highly recommend it. It’s very handy.

It has nothing to do with this discussion though. The people I talk to mostly are bnet friends and the game icon flashes - just like it is doing right now when I have a message.

I don’t know how people survive without WIM installed. Whispers being lumped in with regular chat has always been clunky.

And that’s why on all of my characters, I have a chat tab set up with only whispers, guild chat, group. and instance messages. I have tabs that turn off trade and some don’t contain local. And I toggle NPC chat based on whether I’ve been running instances where the NPC chat alerts me that something is about to happen. You can turn on and off loot dialogue. (I show all loot dialogue on my AH toon, for which I have a separate chat tab.) You can toggle xp announcements and achievements. I mean, the chat system is really dynamic and customizable.

And also, scroll up. Like, what is up with complaining that you might have to occasionally scroll up?

Sigh. You can put bnet chat in the whisper tab. There’s a toggle for that. And if you have a chat tab set up to hold bnet messages, it blinks when you get them.

You can fix the problem yourself and I told you how. Saying that it’s irrelevant to this discussion doesn’t make that true. It just means that you don’t want to fix the problem yourself. You’re just venting. You don’t care if it’s fixed. You want to complain and have everyone agree with you.

PS I scroll up.

Yes it is. I’m done. I uninstalled the addons, on me and my wifes computer. we will not longer call out rares anywhere. We have not found one yet we can’t kill. For now on we will just nuke them down collect our loot and move on. We don’t want to offend anyone or feel entitled to have other people share in our kill.

Good luck everyone, I hope you all get your achievements done. But don’t count on us for help.

And people wonder why we want more single player content. Why anyone would want to put up with this community any more is beyond me.

I personally don’t care if you think it is a problem. It is up to blizzard to determine it is a problem and they may decide it isn’t today but I am confident they will in the near future.

Your solution to the problem isn’t a good solution, in fact it is a really bad solution in my opinion. So no I am not going to do as you ask.

I am not venting either, this isn’t my thread. I just happen to agree that having a separate channel for this would be the best solution for everyone.
