I know, I’ve been here for all of it. Most of those changes were a net positive. Some were not. None were as transformative, except for the last time they completely took pets away from MM, which they then reverted.
I’m not.
The switch to Focus was awesome. It immediately felt much more engaging. Rather than managing mana over a fight, and having to track the 5 second rule, and go through viper Regen phases of pitiful damage, I could just be effective so long as I managed my resources moment to moment, which is what I was doing before anyway.
I was also one of those weirdos who liked blowing up Viper Sting with Chimera Shot. Mana burn is a fun and effective mechanic generally, but Focus is vastly more in line with the class fantasy overall.
I was initially opposed to MoP talents, but came to appreciate that they offered real choice, rather than the old talent trees we had at the time. I think the new trees are better than both, offering meaningful choice but also progression rather than just handing you a new ability every 15 levels. These are iterations on a progression system that impacts the entire game, HUGE changes.
This is different. This is a core fantasy issue.
Imagine if you were a level 80 Hunter. Not MM, BM, or SV, just a Hunter. Spec-less. Think about what that would look like, based on being a spec-less Hunter at level 10. You have a ranged weapon, you have a pet, most of your damage comes from shooting things, you have a bunch of ways to control your enemies, and you have some cool tricks to avoid or escape danger.
For every other class, choosing a spec means making that aspect of the class better, and leaving the rest alone, default. For Hunter, choosing a spec requires sacrificing some part in favor of improving another. SV gives up the bow. MM gives up the pet. BM cedes all the power to the pet.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
