My issue, honestly, isn’t that there aren’t (likely to be) 4 specs. It’s that there’s nothing that can manage that sort of stealthy, tricky, resourceful skirmisher feel and that the current SV spec feels stuck between disparate half-themes.
We’ve never quite managed that sleek, stealthy, guerilla skirmisher feel anyways, to be fair, with RSV being only kind of hitting that identity from the side, lamp-shading its gimmicky electiveness as an identity unto itself. But, the shift into Legion firmly split us from any prospect of that, only to then largely sacrifice what we then got (not a Survival spec at all, but something at least interesting, very new, and imo equally cohesive as RSV) by trying to half-a** a meeting of the old and new with BfA and Shadowlands.
Now, what MSV manages in vestigial subterfuge is contradicted by the wasteful bravado and fireworks of rushing with a spear at people you could shoot or use of hand-tossed bombs, etc. It’s like a hodgepodge of three or more already inflexible personalities – say, a bandana-ed Rambo-esque spear-hunter, a cackling goblin “Wild Card!” grenadier, and some sort of more measured bounty hunter. No part of that, together, gives off vibes of a Survivalist, nor can the name even take a far back seat and to embrace a new eclectic theme; they don’t fit together except in the sense of having potentially a lot of tools to be made good use of, and that doesn’t go far enough to make up for the poor cohesion. It’s simultaneously fettered (especially by the obligatory pet interactions and the melee components that have so little to flesh them out now) and disjointed.
That doesn’t mean MSV isn’t fun, at least by comparison. Many of its builds are – more so, imo, than most meta builds of MM and BM. But it is a mess. And that mess is more likely to hamper any 4th spec than be solved by it.
I want a swift, tricky skirmisher. I wouldn’t mind if that could be done also via melee, if it could be done in such a way that’d actually make sense, but I think more likely that’d either be attached to an MM spec with a greatly revised talent pool by which to allow for some actual thematic choice (instead of just various shades of dull, categorical advantage), or as a spec that did not see fit to force anything else (be that melee or the likes of Kill Command as a generator) upon it.
As for MSV itself, I much preferred Legion’s approach, and would likely prefer that even more if it embraced that theme fully. If there’s to be a melee component, it should be sensible, synergetic, and fleshed out.
