For all of you aspiring map makers

If you want to make some maps, go for it! People are being paranoid. Here’s the reason the agreement is here. So another DotA doesn’t happen. If you don’t know, DotA the biggest Moba currently was originally a mod for Warcraft 3. And they made bank off of it (please correct me of I’m wrong). If you make something, let’s say a new game mode with a custom map, it has to stay in Warcraft 3. So the Lord of the rings maps should be fine.

They didn’t lose it it wasn’t theirs to begin with.

You mean where blizzard was given the right of 1st refusal to work on development on dota and they laughed off ice frog and pendragon.

uhh… capitalism that is actually regulated and such we have no elites who leech off the commoners and exploit labor and go on land grabbing + murder remote communities or do slave labor

Funny, that’s the same model I would recommend.

I’m not suggesting anything. I’m just pointing out this crap is a by product of capitalism. Now if you want to call it unregulated capitalism, then let me argue regulated communism would work as well.
Why don’t you check some socialist and wealthy countries such as norway, sweden, finland,… their standard of living, level of happiness, level of education, social welfare, social security… compared to the wealthiest and most technology advanced country in the world? Lots of americans can’t even afford to stay healthy, difficult to overstate how unfair that is.

If you think communism is responsible for a lot of death, I dare you to think about how many deaths capitalism is responsible for. Say just pollution alone? A lot quieter then outright killing people but a lot deadlier nonetheless.

I don’t think they are morons. They just can’t do much… Cognitively speaking, we just aren’t structurally equiped to realize, at least on an emotional level, what kind of horrors await us; in fact they are already here if you pay attention. The problem is, never in the history of humanity, was it crucial to think about these matters. Evolution selected people that were best able to respond to an immediate and tangible threat. We’re not dealing with that right now, we can’t respond to this new kind of threat. We are completely powerless.

A little tip to some of you : make sure to convert your fake money into actual wealth asap. You’re gonna regret it if you don’t, you can trust me on that.

I think that instead talking about politics or economic system we all must focus our efforts on understand what they intend to do with the mod community that for years saved the game from extinction and probably helped a lot on their decision of a economically feasible remaster.

Edit: In short, If we change the focus on this discussion it may be possible that this thread is going to be ignored.

I’d disagree slightly here. Scandinavian countries are examples where democratic socialism works with small governments elected by citizens backing it. But i agree communism is straight up evil.

Does Activision’s attitude on the World Editor remind you of commies, though?

Creators: “I have this idea for a new map.”

Activision: “No, you don’t. ‘The community’/The company has that idea. It’s ours. OURS!”

Time to start encrypting maps so they can’t be opened in the world editor without the creator’s working copy and permission again. This has been the solution for years in wc3 classic to keep people from directly stealing maps and modifying them without the author’s permission. Gonna at least make blizz put the work in to steal community content.

I am not sure about this, but I think the map encryption was an exploit that no longer exists since 1.31. :frowning:

Btw, it is very likely that any map has/is going to have a “backdoor” for Blizz employees

Edit: Assuming that they want to check your sourcecode.

They would be fine if Blizzard wasn’t banning “3rd party content”-maps from being hosted

This was a great way for them to offer custom maps, but make sure they never ever have to worry about supporting the editor. I mean, who in the hell is going to bother making a custom map if they don’t know what might happen to it?

Goodluck stopping people from hosting naruto games,DBZ,Pokemon, Darkest Dungeon,Lord of the rings, wheel of time, warhammer, and those are just the maps i’ve seen today. As long as people have those maps saved locally on their pc they will continue to rehost them.

You may be right. But, besides all reasons that we shared previously, what concerns me most is that I heard that a map creator from Caterparty was banned and i’m afraid this could become the new standard, not only for creators but for players as well.

That would explain all the people screeching about Caterparty, but a lot of the maps in question don’t even have the original authors anymore, just someone picking up the torch or dread pirate roberts-ing it. - if anyones even working on them at all.

Agreed.

But the reason behind the game is not being bombarded with new maps is mostly the declining population of it (since it is 18yrs old), also we had several splitted communities on private bnet servers or even vpn lan gaming services (ga.re.na).

If I was going to start a new project I would prefer to do so in popular platform, not on a long-dead game.

The reforged is giving us an opportunity of uniting all the gaming community and if we have a good pop i truly belive it is going to be possible to revive the custom map scenario.

We (as a community) must focus our efforts on making it somehow acceptable for newcomers and die-hard fans.

Its like Blizzard is trying to destroy itself on purpose?

Absolutely agree, I want to see Warcraft thrive, with special interest in custom games. I think a basic map protector would go some way towards helping people control their creations at least. Hell even the blizzard EULA stuff aside, people need control over their maps to prevent trolls from changing things and rehosting tainted versions.
