Why do people keep playing the same 10 year old game?

definitely true! especially for WoW (imo).
Diablo 2 was the first ever online game I ever played, many friends same story. So cool to be able to meet up total strangers and make friends.
Classic WoW was so much fun, you were basically soft-forced into teaming up with people to progress. Got my GF addicted for a good year, despite never touching another video game in her life.

As for SC2… it’s just addicting. It takes a long time and inconceivable amount of practice before you can lose and claim “there was literally NOTHING I could have done better - it was the game balance’s fault”

That doesn’t stop people from claiming anyway, but it’s fake news.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. SC2 normies will be playing it with 10 apm at the ripe old age of 110 while they rant online about how the kids these days don’t play “real” video games. They are going to die alone and embittered by their inability to let go, move on, grow & adapt to the changing circumstances. If you can’t move on from a video game, you’re going to have a tough time growing in life.

Better download Fortnight or League of Legends and start learning today.

10 years is nothing. Chess is 1,521 years old. and Checkers is over 5000 years old.

Yeah but those games are good.

Yeah guys, you’re weird.

*Leave to run a Windows 3.1 virtual machine to play Battle Chess while whistling*

C&C was a Dune 2 clone, which predates Warcraft 1.
Blizzard did not invent RTS. Diablo was also very derivative from Baldur’s Gate.

Blizzard invented nothing. All Blizz ever did, was take someone else’s ideas, and polish the hell out of them, hence “Blizzard quality”.

Without other people inventing stuff for Blizzard to take, the current state of the company is the result. They cannot even remaster their old games, properly.

fair enough. But Blizzard brought “RTS” and “ARPG” to the masses that way, and actually made those genres relevant outside of maybe hardcore pc gamers.
Diablo brought loot" to the genre, which is 99% of the reason it became such an addicting hit game.
I just realized I own Red Alert 3 on steam and never got passed the 3rd mission. The whole brand is so inferior to even starcraft 1.

Dune 2 was already popular and successful, before Warcraft 1, and if you are arguing on popularity, Command & Conquer 1 outsold Warcraft 1, by a lot, and was the first massively popular RTS game in the genre, hence why it was called “the original RTS”.

Warcraft 1 still had features like road building and 4 unit selection cap, which was too close to Turn Based games. C&C invented RTS as you know it today, even SC2 is closer to C&C than it is to Warcraft 1.
And the basis of the genre were already laid out in Dune 2.

The basis for Diablo were already laid down in an ancient game called Rogue (1980), as when Diablo launched, it was called a “quasi-Roguelike”.
Rogue was so popular, it started it’s own genre, unlike Diablo.

Blizzard never made anything original, even features like Siege Tank deployment and Warcraft 3’s Heroes, were taken from games like C&C Red Alert and Battle Realms.

If you know Videogame History, you quickly become angry or disappointed at Blizzard.

Blizzard is like Metallica, they did not invent anything, they just made it all corporate.

Dustin Browder did say when they started SC or SC2 or RTS in general they took inspiration from Dune (2) or C&C. I was a big dune 2 player myself but only recent years they probably tried to make some online platform for it back then was just stupid computers/campaign. Funny SC1 had the same structure limitation as the unit in Dune 2. You had to click each unit separately but SC1 somehow decided to make it the same for buildings.

Overall I like Westwood way before Blizzard and before C&C. I take inspiration from them when I make something myself.

There is nothing to blame Blizzard for… there are no entirely new things to make. It will always be a copy of something. It just starts as something based on existing previous and develops in its own way.

Blizzard still made it unique by going on their own. So there’s nothing to ‘steal’ of course you will have similarities to older games in early time.

If one looks at mobile games, Chinese garbage that is recklessly stealing things from WARCRAFT 3 and making it their own mobile garbage - cash grab pay to win or pay to lose, spend HUNDREDS not 100 $ for a game:

Ofc they merged Demon Hunter (wc3) with this Diablo 3 Urzael (im not too familiar with the names of D3 I stopped following after D2 LoD) to look a bit different

and many more examples like this one

Frost Giant studios!!! Can not freaking wait.
