Weird sound issue

Hi,

I have this very weird sound issue in SC2…

First, some backstory: A while back I got myself some noise cancelling headphones (Bose 35QC II) that I connect to over Bluetooth (via the Intel bluetooth device on MSI X470 Gaming M7 AC motherboard). Now, ever since I’ve found that I do not get any audio when playing SC2 (more to come on this). It’s kind’a weird because SC2 has always been very stable for me. When looking into this I noticed that the drop-down menu for audio devices on the sound settings options page only had a “Default” entry, nothing else, which is really weird as I usually have all kinds of output devices (like monitor speakers, the MB audio device and my ASUS Xonar). Checking with WoW I have all these devices and no issues with audio.

I tried resetting settings, updating drivers, rebooting, reinstalling SC2 - all the things usually recommended in situations where the root cause of the issue is unknown - but nothing have helped. I did notice that I sometimes got audio but could never really pin down why so I gave up, hoping for a random fix in a patch.

So, I’ve been playing SC2 without audio for some time when I discovered that whenever I start SC2 while listening to music from my PC in my Bose headphones, the sound would cut off and I would get this half-echo kind of sound - just like as if I was getting my own microphone fed back to me at very low volume. Ok, so I can’t hear SC2 nor can I listen to music while playing… This sucks!

But lo and behold! About two weeks ago I noticed that I did have a list of audio devices in the audio settings dialog - but still no audio… Crud! Clicking around in the menus, figuring that maybe - just maybe - there was some kind of interference between the in-game voice-com and normal audio I went to the “Voice” settings tab and POOF - I had audio without touching anything and I can listen to music while playing.

It turned out that the thing had not solved itself - I still have to have my headphones ON and go to the settings tab and visit the “Voice” tab for audio to work. Not only that, the only sound device that I can get working audio on is my BT headphones! Choosing any other device just gives silence with or without the headphones turned on.

Don’t advice me to reset settings - I’ve done it multiple times - nor to upgrade drivers - also done multiple times since this issue started - nor to reinstall the game - also done since the issue arose. I’m just stumped and figured I’d let you know this issue exists “in the wild”. I’m sad that I can’t play without my headphones but happy that I can at least play SC2 with sounds!

Howdy!

We do not support bluetooth headsets. We cover this Here. Though that link is to the Heroes of the Storm forums this information and stance is correct for StarCraft II as well.

Thank you.
