Tips to git gud as Raynor?

Any tips for that infested terran coop mission where you guard the civilian ships as they takeoff? my forces keep getting obliterated by those exploding terrans even with the +10 health upgrade for marines, damage reduction for medics and +100 health upgrade for firebats

That first ship is always rough, Keep having the same issue as Dehaka since it takes a while to get igniters out.

Have you tried bunkers? I notice base defenses seem to make a pretty big difference on that first ship. Interestingly I feel that the first ship is actually easier to defend on Brutal than on Hard because of the ramps and enemy spawn locations.

After the first ship it should be much easier as you should be able to start getting siege tanks. Siege tanks make a huge difference on that map.

You’re doing it right. Getting firebat or marauder to tank is the right call. Outside of micro’ing the marines away from volatile infested, it’s just safety in numbers.

So to that end, get yourself a solid build order for a strong economy. That way you can reach that critical mass earlier. And the explody-bois won’t be as much of an issue.

Save your banshee for it. I’m pretty sure your banshees come up on time. Plus your ally should be helping to some degree? I’ve never had a problem with this - I just made marines and medics to start with. Then I tech towards more marauders and maybe firebats for fun too. Don’t forget to make your CC ASAP and float it over to the natural as soon as the first wave is over

Ok. I will ask you the most important question.

Where exactly did your army stand when guarding those ships?

I know a couple of players who have absolutely no idea where the infested spawn and they stand right on top of those places which understandably poof 120 supply out of the mission in a single spawn of infested.

Cerebrate’s got the bigger question I think, but what are your Siege Tanks looking like for the mission? A decent chunk of them goes a long way to making life much easier as well.

Naturally, don’t rush them out for the first ship, but Tanks really are king on Miner Evac. (Outside of air units, but Marines handle them no problem)

  1. Don’t be afraid to use your top bar abilities to help you defend.
  2. Siege Tanks are a worth while investment for support. alternatively, Banshees with Shockwave Missile Battery.
  3. Sort your army out. Firebats in front, Marines in middle, Medics in the back. SO many Raynors that I see don’t army shuffle properly and lose so many marines.
  4. Get many Orbital Commands and MULE spam your mineral lines. I personally use 6 OCs, some use 8.

I didn’t have siege tanks yet so I did my usual marine-medic-fireball deadball and I wasn’t expecting those baneling infested to come

also those are lots of OCs D:

It’s a lot of OCs, but they pay themselves off in dividends. MULEs mine like 25 minerals a trip or something like that, and OCs give you supply. Each MULE gives you about 270 minerals per 90s life span. Definitely worth it.

Small correction on details but core message is true regardless.

25 per trip for 9 trips and 225min total per MULE in 90sec, which OC casts every 90sec. So it’s a continuously 150min/min income for every MULE. Well worth the investment, earlier the better.

For the first ship I’ll have my banshees clear the way and at least part of the expo for a few scvs to start a bunker. Then drop the Hyperion when the first Nydus pops up. Keep it moving for max dps. I’ve not done this one solo with Raynor yet, but there’s probably a LilArrin solo video that would show how it’s done.

The rest is a few bunkers and lots of tanks. Then once I have maxed army I just mine all the spawns with missle turrets behind. Definitely agree on the 6-8 OCs. A good starting build order will help you loads.

Edit: Raynor’s (non-P1) power scales immensely with a strong economy.

With a large amount of Marine, medic and firebat (100+ supply), infested should not be able to cause you so much trouble even if you lack siege tanks.

If you lack siege tanks, i would suggest adding 3-6 marauders in your army until u can get siege tanks out.

Just remember to keep your army clumped up at the ship, manually move firebat to the outer edge of that clump and hit the Hold command to assure they don’t run away.

Have many OCs ready to scan for banshees then control a group of marine to shoot those down. Infested banshee when cloaked have a long attack range (9 i think) so u will have to be mindful.

As others have said, the number one way to git gud at raynor is economy. Build multiple OCs and spam mules. I usually go with 4 OCs, not 6-8, but that’s a minor detail. If you have enough bio, nothing in the game will be a problem.

Also, use your calldowns. Like, from 4 to 6 minutes, you don’t actually need any army, because you can call down dusk wings at 4 minutes and then call hyperion down once dusk wings time out. With full dusk wing mastery, you can then call down your next dusk wing wave when hyperion times out. So yeah, if you are having trouble with early fights, let your calldowns handle them.

That’s a really good tip, but it comes with a caveat. You need to pay attention to the map and enemy composition, as there will be times where if you rely on the second Dusk Wings then you can be caught out against flyers they can’t target.

In any other situation you can plan your army to be available after them.

dios mio infested banshees?? now I’m scared on what brutal will be

I’m still lvl 10 Raynor, but noted.

Brutal just have more Infested Banshee.
Infested Banshee lacks the splash damage that Raynor’s Banshee has so they are not as dangerous and marines counter them well.

The problem is they have longer attack range than marine when they cloak which mean if you don’t pay attention they can kill a lot of marines.

I usually build a number of vikings and set them to defend against banshees.

Siege Tanks absolutely own this mission. For all the commanders that have them.

expo with banshee cd (you should have 2nd CC rdy). hyperion cd for 1st shuttle def with help of your ally. I don’t make army until after 1st shuttle save and i usually have 4-5 OCs, 3 factories, and 1 starport before enemy wave to 2nd shuttle.
then tanks main with some vikings to deal with enemy air and few turrets for detection. you can use scan instead of turrets, but with turrets, you can just forget the shuttle area and do other things. you won’t even need ally’s help after 1st shuttle.

you can also just mass BCs. I use same build as above for this as well. instead of making 3 factories, i make 1 factory and 3 starports.

mass firebats/medics with some vikings or BCs also fun.
i think banshee cd to clear expo and hyperion cd for 1st shuttle def and having 4-5 OCs before enemy wave to 2nd shuttle makes any build for raynor work on this map. At least this is how i play on the map.

Basically what people are saying is there is a lot of time. At level 10 Raynor, you should have both calldowns. And that should carry you to 7min at least.

To put it to perspective, wave 1 that attacks your base spawns at 6:30 while claimer wave (ship assault) spawn at 8min. While panic launch on the 2nd ship (most launch before this anyway) isn’t until 12min.

So that means you have a good 8min+ to get your army into gear. Past 8min, you’re well into midgame while past 12min you’re headed to late game by definition. So a solid build order really will make or break your progress.

If that economy isn’t online by 8min, or if you waited until 12min past, then you’re looking at a lot of issues simply due to mission design:

  • 9min bonus 1 spawn.
  • 13min wave 2 to base.
  • 15min claimer to ship 3.
  • 15min bonus 2 spawn.
  • panic launch at 16.5min of ship 3.

The issues continue to compounds on top of one another. The very difficulty of coop at its core. Once mastered to engage early, which comes from solid build order and top bar usage. These become non-issue. And you’ll be on your way to cheese those Eradicators before they even come online or body-blocking Blightbringer :joy:.

We need to see a replay. You make the right units, but must be in the wrong order with wrong upgrades if you are struggling. I personally open with 2 firebats with armor and flame upgrades, and a medic. Than go into mass marine. If ally is doing a 15 min opener - add two more firebats followed by marines. All this is on one base play.
