SC2 killing the sound in my laptop

Title pretty much sums it up, but I will try to elaborate as best as possible. During regular operation, and running any other game, I have no sound issues whatsoever.

However, whenever I launch SC2, the whole sound on my laptop dies. Completely. Not just SC2 but literally any app that is producing sound stops dead on its tracks, be it a YouTube video or player in the background, sound just stops until I close SC2, then sound resumes once more. Not sure if it matters or not, but I’m using a BT speaker.

OS runs from SSD, but SC2 is installed in a HDD

If it helps, I just formatted the SSD, but when installing Battle*net (you can’t include links lol), the client found SC2 folder and updated from there.

Hey there,

Are you aware of any third party software on the PC that manages audio? Such as MSI Nahimic, Asus Sonic Studio, or other similar programs? Basically anything that isn’t part of Windows that does audio. If yes let us know the name of them (before trying uninstalling just in case they’re important for the computer)

Lets also and grab a DxDiag so we can further investigate the problem. Here are the instructions:

1. Press Windows Key + R.
2. Type DxDiag and press Enter.
3. In the DxDiag window, click Save All Information.
4. Name the file “dxdiag” and click Save
5. Once you have that made, open the file. You’ll need to copy and paste the contents of the Text document into the post, and put four Tilde (~) marks above the DXDiag. It’ll look like this:

Description: Speakers (Bluetooth Audio Device)

Bluetooth audio is not supported by any of our games. There are some misconceptions about this due to the fact the quality of the Bluetooth device and certain settings “may” allow it to work so some players might not ever run into any issues or notice.

I’ll try to provide a rundown of why. Bluetooth headsets are commonly used to transfer via small amounts of data. They are not intended to be used for gaming.

Bluetooth headsets and Wireless headsets are different things. Wireless headsets use dongles to transfer data wirelessly (similar to regular wireless) these can be treated similarly to Analog or USB headsets and should work.

Bluetooth is broken down in 3 Audio profiles:

• Headset – 8kHz / 8bits (Mono sound channel)
• Hands-Free - 16kHz / 8bits (Mono sound channels, allows more control on your phone)
  - A2DP - (Allows for near CD-quality audio but no microphone)

Players “may” be able to use Headset or Hands-Free settings. A2DP (Stereo on Windows) will never work. You could contact the manufacturer of the Bluetooth device to see if they have any recommendations.

Greetings and sorry for the late response, was somewhat busy.

The thing is, like I said, I reinstalled Windows due to unrelated reasons, and before reinstalling, BT audio speaker (more alarm clock but w/e) was working just fine. I could use it for gaming purposes no problem, and still can with other games. Haven’t tried with all my library, but some games I can play and listen to sound via BT speaker, are Sekiro, AoE 2 Definitive Edition, Don’t Starve, Hades, Fallout NV, among others, with zero issues.

It’s not a headset or hands-free, it’s a BT speaker that I was able to use just fine, before the reinstall.

I want to clear up some concerns with Bluetooth devices. This is an issue with how bluetooth functions. Bluetooth devices are typically only a concern if voice chat functions are trying to be used along side as speakers/headsets. You’ll see this problem for other games that have the voice chat functionality, since bluetooth is designed for telephone audio, not high fidelity gaming audio.

Because of this, it’s prone to issues in gaming audio when stereo audio and microphone access is needed. The Headset, Hands-free, and Advance Audio Distribution are profile settings for Bluetooth audio devices. They are tied in with Bluetooth speakers and other devices like Airpods.

If you do have other applications and the microphone on the Bluetooth devices are used (if available), setting the bluetooth device settings to Headset should give you the best compromise for this. The audio quality may not be as crisp on this setting.

I hope that the issue has been resolved by now, but in case it isn’t. It may not be the concern in this situation with the Bluetooth speaker device, Daikataro. Alienware does come with something called the Alienware Sound Center (or Command Center - AWCC). Does it help to try disabling these applications?

Just a note, it may not be relevant to the issue, but may help resolve any other problems with the microphone if you have any issues with it. The Microphone default devices are not set properly, the steps here should help fix it up!

I had the same issue and fixed it by merely disabling (not disconnect) the microphone on my bluetooth headset, as described by this post back here:

Alright folks, I have figured out how to fix that in my setup: no need to remove audio software or whatnot. Open your sound settings (sound settings -> sound countrol panel, looks like an good old win style control panel window). Now, make sure that “playback”: both default and default communication device is pointing to your headphones “recording”: your headphones headset is NOT selected neither as “default” or “default communication” device. Pick you notebook mic or whatever else for that. …

As soon as I did that, turned it off and back on it worked like a charm. There’s some weird interaction where the game’s getting its record / playback channels mixed up, which is pathetic, but whatever.
