Crowdfunding would undermine the idea that they need to output content we want before we give them money. If you all don’t get that then you don’t understand the business balance between consumer and seller. The only time you invest money into a company without getting something first is if you are buying stock in them.
And Blizzard has Activision’s financial backing. They do not in any capacity need our funding, nor should we encourage the extremely wealthy to suck our hard earned cash before delivering. If you don’t like their output ratio then that’s what you need to communicate, not by sinking money that they don’t need into them, but either by persistent shows of commitment, like more people actually playing, or by voting with your wallets - by not spending.
I’d be fine with buying new missions if they costed like two bucks a piece myself. My main concern with that is that it might divide the community, and if we wanna show them that we want more content then we need a united front.
In the end, their reason for not making new missions anymore is easy: They don’t make money from that production, and they don’t judge the interest in the game to go up enough by this effort to justify the expenses.
I generally agree with this. But if it results in a constant stream of new commands/maps/skins then it could be worth it.
They do have more than enough money that’s for sure.
Dude, it’s five bucks per commander.
Compare that to Fallout 76, which is getting almost a fanbase boycott over their business practices or Elder Scrolls Online, where you’re literally paying 100+ dollars for an in-game house sometimes.
Coop is not that bad.

It would not “result in a constant stream of new commands/maps/skins”. That will only happen if interest for it actually goes up, and that you can show simply by playing more. Let’s say they took your money and gave you something. This would not keep happening if the interest for the game isn’t actually going up, and it won’t, because the idea that you need to pay an extremely wealthy company to make content for you to play would not be well receieved.
And I don’t think Blizzard wants that on their image either. The ugly truth is that the game is old and declining, and nothing short of a sharp increase in players can change that. Simple entropy. And keep in mind, for some time we had a steady stream of content. This did not stop the games decline.
Commanders are finished work being sold, like any product. It has nothing to do with paying for work to even start. The business practices in 76 are in some cases downright illegal, and the 100+ dollar thing for a house in ESO is still a product that has actually been made being sold.
It probably wouldn’t divide the community if you could play on a paid map as long as one of the players had it (ie if you don’t have it you could select Random map and be paired with someone that Does have it…who either selected it or had Random map)
Well, they tried selling arcade modes and that didn’t go over well. I’m not against them attempting to sell missions, but that’s still a risk.
Arcade modes are not co-op maps, though. Arcade is fun but an unrelated mode; co-op maps are essential to long term survival for co-op.
Not as essential as new commanders. Also it’s fully possible that blizzard have simply accepted that this game is dying along with all its mode and are just making what money they can.
Well, the new commanders keep coming, which is good, but maps not so much.
Let’s say they developed 15 more missions for this game. Would it even be possible to get bored with coop, then? You just turn on Random, and every game is a different game. It would be awesome.
Yes you could and would get bored. And it’s unlikely that many will be added in the lifespan this game has left.
Blizzard really could’ve added the map from the final hots mission, but instead of trying to take over Mengsk, it is Amon or one of his subjects. It would have fit well.
Considering your rather bleak prognosis, I have to wonder why you care about this game enough to post on its forums. Why concern yourself with a game you believe will die soon?
Because I’m a realist who enjoys this game and want the time I have with it to be as enjoyable as I can, so I share my thoughts to help shape it in that direction.
Same reasons as everyone else. I don’t need to share your idealism to have a place here and it’s kinda rude of you to act like I do.
Also, this game has been kicking for a damn long time. Saying that it won’t fade away or that you wouldn’t eventually get bored no matter how many missions there are is naive. Saying the opposite isn’t bleak but realistic.
Also, I never said it’s going to die soon, but thanks for assuming. I said it’s declining. I never said how fast or how slow. It will likely have a stable playerbase for years to come.
I wasn’t trying to be rude, but the reality of Bliz forums in general is some of the people come to forums to say the game sucks. If you don’t believe me, spend about an hour browsing Overwatch or World of Warcraft forums and you’ll see what I mean. SC is a friendlier bunch, and coop is probably the friendliest.
I never really understood the “this game sucks” crowd so much. There’s only so much time to be spent on entertainment, might as well focus efforts on something you like.
i personally think there’s zero chance of Starcraft dying. It’s one of Bliz’s iconic franchises, they will either make Starcraft III or something on that level. Not a lot of games have all of Asia obsessed with them. Why let smething die when you cna make heaps off it?
Nah, that place is full of realists. Plus I got silenced too many times.
It is also one of the most abandoned franchises. Truth is, StarCraft don’t make as much money as some of the other IPs so it is on the backburner.
Well, in fairness, everybody expected Diablo franchise to die after the Cell Phones thing, this BlizCon D3 got more devs assigned to it and D4 was announced.
Asia as a continent seems to be pretty darn enthusiastic about Starcraft. I’ve heard it said that SC is like chess to them. If a high quality SC game was put out, I am pretty sure they’d have a field day.
I run a thread on OW (used to be two threads) and we manage to have a good time hanging out. Only one of my crew got perma’d, and admittedly while I liked him, he kinda was a troll. xD
One word though. Money. StarCraft does not bring in much, does not get much.
Right, but they could change that with one well-made game.
Bethesda is probably not a good example right now with the Fallout 76 fiasco, but they tend to make an Elder Scrolls or Fallout game every few years and there’s people lining up at midnight to get their pre-ordered copies.
I imagine if they sprung an awesome Starcraft game on us, nobody would regret the 60 dollars or something.
Sorry if I am not at my best right now, it’s past 3 am here and I am half asleep.
As has been said, SC2 doesn’t make them a lot of money comparatively. This is mainly why we see less and less content. Not just for co-op but in general.
As for it if will die, everything dies eventually.
