After seeing how much ladder void rays have been shaking up the meta with their new movement buffs, I want to ask you guys how you all feel about Vorazun’s void rays. Of course, not every unit in a commander’s selection needs to be good, (looking at you, Zagara’s corruptors) but I feel like void rays are just too slow and expensive to be all that useful. Any thoughts?
I use them more now that I’m using P3 as my standard.
They are definitely prone to damage and bulk death especially if you’re careless. However, they are still very good to use.
I think they are good. Of cause I do not use them against mass ling etc comps, like I’ve seen others do, so for me they actually work.
great for infested maps imo
Mass ling is not a problem. Mass marine is more problematic. But if you always fight under time stop, black hole or/and dark pylon it works out very well even vs “counter” comps. Also if they get even minimum benefit from ally (any type of healing/regen, dmg/range boost) they work miracles. But require very precise control. And you probably won’t look fancy on scoreboard because of early game ramp-up.
My point was that 10 voids take longer to kill 100 lings than 10 dts would, so I would have built dts. On a map like Mist Opportunities you do not have the luxury of slowly killing a lot of units, the bot will die before Voids can kill a wave of lings.
The don’t have cool rays.
Same problem as in above post about lings, unless ally does all the work for 10 min, a few voidrays do not stop a wave of infested. Yet I see it all the time. By now I just let my ally die when they do this.
other than screwing around you’ll need to give me a reason to use it over DT/Corsairs
i make photon cannons on the first wave (surrounding a dark pylon), it always works for me unless there is a dangerous mutation
The key to Void rays is air attack upgrade(don’t use another cybercore, you need to reach the critical mass of voids) and a few dark pylons for recall, without them, it’s just far worse than corsair+dts, also if you’re going void rays, don’t mix up any other unit except maybe cloaked oracles, “maybe” cuz just having oracle following the beam bois for detection already does the job, only being scared of splash dmg killing them so cloak has that revive going.
I would say void rays do well with P1 so they don’t just straight up die to some splash dmg, but then you miss recall which is important to deal with attack waves, so you’re better off with P0 or P3, P3 works well as you have time stop dts.
Somewhat weaker than dt/sair but stronger than gate units. Black hole and ts make them very hard to counter by amon, I tried multiple times different maps on brutal and they can carry, but not recommended for brutation.
Saw a void ray centurion build on scythe of amon that looked effective
Perhaps I shall find the replay and see what he did early game
Great DPS vs armored but fairly fragile.
Extremely vulnerable to parasitic bomb and other AOE damage spells.
However corsairs already do a good job vs air (thanks to black hole reducing enemy armor).
And Dark Templar already do a good job vs ground targets (thanks to being broken AF).
So Void Rays have one selling point and that is they are flying which grants them better mobility than DTemplar and immunity to anti-ground attacks like Reavers.
Consider going Void Rays to avoid heavy anti-ground (reavers, siege tanks, lurkers, banelings…) but make sure you use Black Hole to keep them safe.
I like Void Rays. They’re technically Vorazun’s most efficient unit vs infested since their beam is a series of rapid low-damage attacks. Sometimes if I can thinly justify it (“oh no they’re going siege tanks…”) then I’ll go mass Void Rays, if only to mix it up from the usual DT/Corsair.
I never rush them though, or go only Void Rays; I put the excess minerals to Centurions who are a pretty good frontline for them as they can stun and draw fire from any ground-based anti-air. I’ve been meaning to try the comp with Vorazun’s P1 with maximum Dark Pylon Range as well and see how all the buffs stack up.
If nothing else, I find Void Rays a nice alternative to go once in a while, and I think Vorazun’s P1 gives them a bit of a renewed lease on life.
just a minor note
AI is designed that they will prefer to shoot air if they have both anti-air and ground capabilities
So if something can shoot at Void Ray and Centurion, it will still shoot at Void Rays so Centurions can’t really “tank” for Void Rays outside of the stuns.
Opinion on Vorazun Void Rays?
I think they suck.
That’s from my trauma of seeing people taking what feel to be at least 20 minutes to take them out of their gates in Dead of Night, while in that time, dark templars would have cleared 75% of the map or something, and they insist on buying only that.
Too much stupidity, I just don’t want to see them anymore.
I know the issue come from the players rather than the unit, but what’s done is done: my hatred is on that unit.
I mean, same can be said to carriers/battlecruisers, though at least these units can take some splash dmg without dying, but has the same issues of the bad macro player
Void Rays can kill stuffs but slow to ramp up.
Yes and no, its more complicated than that:
Assuming same attack target priority (most units have the same), the unit will attack the closest threat unit with it’s primary weapon. A threat unit being one capable of attacking them, or a caster.
For pretty much every unit that has a separate weapon for anti-air, that’s it’s primary weapon, and will focus on the closest air unit due to that. There are some exceptions, like the Battlecruiser, which considers its ATG its primary weapon.
However, units with only one weapon that can attack both air and ground will treat both planes the same, and attack whatever is closest.
So, for example if you go in with a Centurion/Void Ray army against Goliath they will target the Void Rays. However if it’s say Dragoons, they will target the Centurions instead.
