New Mutations for Patch 5.0.0

New mutations for Patch 5.0.0

10 new mutations which should last until mid-October.

Beggars Can't Be Choosers

Mag-Nificent - Mag Mines are deployed throughout the map at the start of the mission.
Minesweeper - Groups of Widow Mines and Spider Mines are buried throughout the battlefield.
Slim Pickings - Player worker units gather resources at a reduced rate, but resource pickups spawn throughout the map.

Rating:

With your economy essentially quartered, you’ll need to venture onto the map to collect valuable resources. The problem here is probably that the area outside your map is camped with tons of widowmines. Mag mines are easy, but the widow mines will destroy your workers. Once Supergary is out, you should have a relatively simple time with the mutation. Also I think Apex Predator Zagara might be good vs mines. Maybe Solarite Celestial Karax can spam enough Orbital Strikes to win. Map awareness needs to be on point to avoid losing stuff pointlessly.

My Bots!

Boom Bots - Uncaring automatons carry a nuclear payload toward your base. One player must discern the disarming sequence and the other player must enter it.
Kill Bots - Invincible Kill Bots attack your forces until they hit their predetermined kill limit and shut down.

Rating:

We’ll get to have our first look at the new mutator on Mist Opportunities. Apparently these things spawn from enemy buildings, just like kill bots do. So as long as we full clear the map, we will get to stop the bots from spawning. I’ve heard that pausing the game and communicating with your ally is a good strategy to have vs boom bots, and playing as a Zerg commander is a great strategy for kill bots. Also, this is a mutation it’s better to go for Arkship Commandant as Artanis.

Multitasking Trainer

Micro Transactions - Giving commands to your units costs resources based on the unit’s cost.
Void Rifts - Void Rifts periodically appear in random locations and spawn enemy units until destroyed.

Rating:

This is where you need to learn how to make fast Brutalisks. This is just another game for Abathur, but other commanders who don’t have lots of mobility and or free units are pretty gutted. Recommendation here is Abathur obviously. Apex Predator Zagara, maybe Zap Kerrigan with worms, Spin2Win Zeratul, Lone Puppy Tychus with HH Galactic Gunrunner support, Dehaka with a Solarite Celestial Karax for Rifts, stuff like that.

Hello My Old Friend

Black Death - Some enemy units carry a plague that deals damage over time and spreads to other nearby units. The plague spreads to your units when the enemy unit is killed.
Darkness - Previously explored areas remain blacked out on the minimap while outside of player vision.
Moment of Silence - When a Heroic enemy unit dies all player units around it will reflect on their sins, unable to attack or use their abilities.

Rating:

It’s the cheese map again! So we can do the Anakh Su’n one. We can use Arty/Karax with Solarite Celestial. Earth Splitters will be great here once again. Lord of the Horde will be amazing if Stukov can actually get to 150 supply. Swann/Stet is another free win. Just make sure to make a wall and keep tanks at least 5 range behind so the black death can’t get you. Kerrigan’s creep can help keep Vorazun’s workers alive, so get worms in their mineral line.

Of One Mind

Boom Bots - Uncaring automatons carry a nuclear payload toward your base. One player must discern the disarming sequence and the other player must enter it.
Polarity - Each enemy unit is immune to either your units or your ally’s units.
Sharing is Caring - Supply is shared between you and your partner, and units from both armies contribute to your combined supply cap.

Rating:

Name makes a lot of sense. All three mutators force allies to be on the same page all the time. I’m surpried they didn’t pick Cradle of Death or Lock & Load for this one. I would recommend pairing 100 supply cap commanders with each other, and 200 supply cap commanders with each other, and auto max commanders with each other, to minimize supply woes. Whoever can hero solo probably should try it. I also foresee a lot of pain on the solo queue for this. The hard counter to Polarity and Boom Bots are competent allies, so definitely recommend finding those. You guys have like 5 weeks to find one. Do it!

Blasting Off Again

Going Nuclear - Nukes are launched at random throughout the map.
Lava Burst - Lava periodically burst from the ground at random locations and deals damage to player air and ground units.
Power Overwhelming - All enemy units have energy and use random abilities.

Rating:

Lots of splash damage here targeting big armies. I’m leaning toward going Hero solo for this one. Maybe Hyperion Spam for Rebel Raider Raynor would work. Desolate Queen Kerrigan and Spin2Win Zeratul might work for a hero solo. Maybe I can even throw in an Apex Predator Zagara and Lone Puppy Tychus hero solo. Abathur and Dehaka will be amazing as usual. Vorazun could stop waves and stuff for them. Nexus Legate can let Arty get out of really tough situations. I might give that a shot.

Enter the Nexus

Blizzard - Storm clouds move across the map, damaging and freezing player units in their path.
Heroes from the Storm - Every attack wave will be led by a random Hero of increasing power. Each Objective point is also guarded by three random Heroes.

Rating:

Normally on Cradle of Death you can go light on the base defense since the enemies will go up the ramp, but with heroes joining the waves, you might need more firepower, especially note when Nova arrives because you will need to intercept her before she nukes your ramp defenses. Vorazun will be good for defense. Abathur will be great in general. Infiltration Specialist Nova, Merchant of Death, Zap Kerrigan, Lone Puppy Tychus will be great for clearing bases. This might be one of the times where Knowledge Seeker might actually be needed, rather than overkill for Zeratul. Ye this one seems interesting.

Death is Fleeting

Just Die! - Enemy units are automatically revived upon death.
Void Reanimators - Void Reanimators wander the battlefield, bringing your enemies back to life.

Rating:

For a Brutal +4, this will be a relatively straightforward one. I see HH doing HH things with a Karax or Swann. I’ll probably do another Raynor floaty cheese this time with Nova Infiltration Specialist. Stetboii with fast spreading Signal Savant might make it really easy to snipe Void Reanimators before they do anything. Then just Infestors for out-free-units-ing the enemy. Other commanders might need help though.

Mass Manufacturing

Propagators - Reality warping sludges are crawling towards you. Anything they touch is turned into a copy of the sludge.
Void Rifts - Void Rifts periodically appear in random locations and spawn enemy units until destroyed.

Rating:

This is definitely a speedrunning challenge. Void Rifts and Poopagators both get worse the longer the map goes on. So if you want fewer Rifts and fewer poops, you have to complete the map faster. Abathur, HH, Zagara are good vs Rifts, and Vorazun, Nova, Raynor are effective vs Poops. A piece of good news is that the poops are slow, so a lot of commanders can actually fight them. I do expect a lot of difficulty here though. I might be forced to do a video with commentary from replay because Void Rifts and Poops both require a ton of attention paid to them.

Fire in the Hole

Boom Bots - Uncaring automatons carry a nuclear payload toward your base. One player must discern the disarming sequence and the other player must enter it.
Missile Command - Endless missile bombardments target your structures and must be shot down throughout the mission.

Rating:
There are two ways to deal with missile command. For commanders with excellent static defense, just put them all around your base. For other commanders you can spam random buildings elsewhere to draw away the missiles. The Boom Bots would throw a weird curve ball but I think the pause function would once again be very good for it. Stukov I think would be very popular here since he can just spam tanks and bunkers to solve the map and the missiles.

That is a serious murder’s row. My Bots!, Fire in the Hole, and Death is Fleeting look to be the easiest of the bunch, I think - depending on how much of a pain boom bots turn out to be. The others are probably going to be a pass from me. Look like an awful headache.

The Brutal+ rating for “My Bots” is missing from the original post. Also, they really should update the description of Sharing is Caring to not confuse people, since “your ally’s units count towards your supply” isn’t immediately apparent, and the first part of the sentence is outright misleading.

Anyways, given that Sharing is Caring does not have a Brutal+ point rating (given that it’s not available in custom), and the two other mutators in Of One Mind already add up to 17 points, which is above the Brutal+5 upper bound, whether we could consider Of One Mind a Brutal+6 if Sharing is Caring were to ever be available in custom and given a point rating. To this day, we’ve only had one Brutal+6 weekly mutation, and this is probably as close as we have to another one.

For Beggars can’t be Choosers you forgot to mention Zeratul. He will almost certainly trivialize that mutation.

Hey, Ferb. I know what i am not going to do today!

How specific does the code need to be? When I came across it randomly while trying the CoD B+6 XP cheese, the code appears like “1-2-3-4” hovering over the bot. I assume only one of us can see it (so both need to send a worker or something to each, so one can read). Can we enter it as “1234” or does it need to be “1-2-3-4” exactly? What about spaces? Does the ally need to type it in “Allies” chat to disarm the bot or specifically “All”, so Amon can read it, or something?

Is Boom Bot a new mutators?

Why do I feel like I don’t recall this one. Do I have early onset dementia… I don’t remember now…

From what I’ve read, the second person doesn’t type it in chat at all. You click on the Boom Bot unit and type it into the command card. The first person will need to use chat or VoIP to tell the second person the code, of course.

They are perfect and killable. Ones of the small list of mutations that really allow you play in starcraft, not in horror-like runaway nuisance.

Boom Bots is a new mutator introduced with the 5.0.0 patch. It has a point value of 10, the same as HftS and Void Rifts, so you know it’s hard.

I know Gary is still my favorite. Your Boom Bot has nothing over it!

Not gonna lie, boom bot mutator sounds fun, i’m hyped for that one

Now I haven’t seen it quite yet in action, but given how mutators have been as a whole. The word fun doesn’t sound like the base backbone of any of them.

Given its description of one player must discern the code while another enters it. I’m sure this devastating nuke will go off way more often than it should ever with people who (are the same ones) don’t know how to deal with mutators.

Fun… seems like an unlikely scenario. Even in the best circumstances with this mutator, it is just an altered version of Polarity (and we all know how that goes).

Ok, they’ve really taken it to the next level. Before there were 2-3 that sounded horrible, now it’s like 2 that don’t sound like that (Death is Fleeting / Fire in the hole). And Hello My Old Friend sounds doable enough, but a bit harder than the other two. Most of them will give us a lot of trouble, at least at first sight.

That being said, for My Bots! I think bunker p3 Stukov will be cotw… if they don’t nerf that prestige into the ground by then. Zagara with P1 (or without) might also do well here.

Blasting Off Again will be a big pain, even if you go hero solo, you could get the lucky combo of Vortex + Seeker Missile + Time Warp + Psi Orb… and probably a nuke around that area and / or some lava burst, cause why not? I see this as one of the hardest mutations from this list, probably harder than Mass Manufacturing.

Speaking of that, I think you forgot to mention Tychus as a good counter for propagators on Mass Manufacturing - Sam with stun grenade = easy peasy. And he should also be able to deal with Void Rifts quite well, either by destroying them fast due to high damage output or he can tank them because he’s got lots of health and fast healing.

Oh, interesting, we already knows all upcoming mutation!

Seem that won’t get a lot easier in the upcoming weeks. Brutal +5 mostly, 1 Brutal +6 (counting Sharing is Caring as at least some points), and then some Brutal +4.

New Mutators…
—Lone Mouse - keyboard shortcuts for command cards are disabled
—Cat Attack! - Blizzard ships to your location, an actual cat that will distract you, and sit in front of your computer monitor
—Failure is not an option - Optional objectives are required

New Mutations…
—Cat and Mouse - Lock & Load
Cat Attack!
