- I need you to help me move the SC2 folder OUT of ~/Documents. It should not be there in the first place, as it causes problems such as not playing nice with OneDrive.
- I need this WITHOUT the use of symlinks or other OS-layer constructs. Only SC2-settings such as reg hive keys associated with SC2.
- This is tech support - do not move it to General, and I don’t need random trolls telling me this is general feedback.
- I don’t need you telling me how to or how not to use OneDrive. I need you telling me how to configure your product, so it plays nice with the default installation of OneDrive, which syncs ~/Documents and ~/Pictures by default.
3:your right, not a general topic.
1:thats based on the way the game is made, and where it creates folders(tbh, i liked it better back in the day when a game only had files in its installation folder)
2:not sure keeping files out of there will work, or would even allow the game to work. at least not without a bit of reprograming
4: if onedrive wont back up a folder, sounds like an issue with the program itself; but the good news is that its mostly got files that would be repopulated from the server, or saves\replays etc, and really any type of backup software would be able to save that for you easily, if you cant get onedrive to start working right.
maybe not so much of the answer you want, but a workaround at least

It may or may not require reprogramming. Perhaps there’s a hidden reg key we can set to repoint it? Only Bliz can tell us whether it is hard coded (hence requiring code changes) or soft coded as a default for a parameterized config.
-
Bliz recommend NOT synching its files as it causes problems for SC2 to run. I also do NOT want to sync its files, as I have noted the following problems:
2.1. SC2 does not run properly when maps is being synced.
2.2. replays waste a lot of cloud storage when they aren’t important enough to back up on the cloud.
2.3. hardware specific config is saved in this location, which syncs across causing problems in a multi-PC setup.
The only sub-folder which I want backed up are the banks folders, which can be achieved by pointing a symlink from ~/Documents to the banks folder itself, OR by selecting the banks folder as a root sync folder in OneDrive/GDrive/etc.
- OneDrive IS backing up ~/Documents correctly. See above on why backing up SC2 folder IS A problem.
ok, i see what your getting at now. talking about one drive got me thinking from the wrong end lol.
as far as reg keys, i wish you luck. i can work in my registry if i know what to look for, but not able to decipher it that well.
when you say multi-pc, any chance you mean your running a few pc’s off a server? cause i found some stuff on file\folder redirection, but it looks like its based on something for a server…
When I say multi-PC, I mean I have 3 (actually 4) different PCs with ~/Documents synched, so I can work and play from any of the 3 depending on the situation.
Primary in my study: Ryzen 7 3800x / RTX2080 / 4k monitor, run SC2 @ 4k, ultra, borderless window
Secondary, in the living room: i5-6600 / GTX1060-mini ITX / 4k TV, run SC2 @ 4k, med, borderless window
Backup desktop, used when primary is under maintenance or during domestic travel: i5-3570 / GTX1070 / monitor depends on location, run SC2 @ depends on location, ultra, borderless window
International Travel: i5-8300H / GTX 1060 laptop with 1080p screen, run SC2 @ 1080p, low, fullscreen
nice. i think im a little jealous actually lol. ive only got one running.
i found some info on group policy’s, but they look like they might be geared more for pcs running from a central server, rather than synched though something like one drive, so not sure if it will work for you(i havent messed much with that kind of stuff much since high school, so its been a while-put it this way, we would find ways to hid sc(1) to play lol).
sry i misunderstood your first post, and that i cant really help too much. at this point im just trying to brainstorm for ya. if i think of something else, ill look it up and check back in.
Hey jkim78,
I replied to your first thread that was moved to General Discussion. In short, there’s isn’t a way to change where those files go. And because you would like to be able to, it’s considered a suggestion for the developers. So the thread was moved to where the developers will see it.
I think there was a way to change the paths on installation. If you open the app, go to the top left, click on it and click on settings, and go under game install/update, you will see what I am talking about roughly. You’re going to have to look up a solution for the rest - I know there’s probably some old Reddit/Liquipedia posts out there that address this issue. I personally managed to move my files from a C drive to a D drive, so it’s certainly possible to redirect the files. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but hopefully this leads you in the right direction.
This is correct. Technical Support forums are managed by Technical Support and the developers may not review these forums as often. As technical support, we only offer technical support that’s within our scope of support. There isn’t much that we can offer in this situation other than the basic steps, such as OneDrive if something is not working properly.
In this situation, this is more directed towards the feedback regarding the way the current file structure is set. This would be appropriate for the General Discussion where the others can discuss this issue further and our developers can gather proper feedback.
