Mengsk achievement bug?

I was trying to get Mengsk’s “The Best of the Best of the Best, Emperor” achievement, whose description is:

Reach Rank 3 with at least 50 supply of Royal Guard units simultaneously on Hard difficulty.

So far as I understand it from this thread, the achievement is to have over 50 supply of Royal Guard units at the instant that any one of them reaches Rank 3. Is this correct?

In my case, I was playing on Dead of Night, on Hard Difficulty. I obtained Rank 3 at 25:20 with like 9-10 tanks or so (I don’t remember exactly, but it was at least 50 supply worth), yet I didn’t get the achievement.

Link to replay: drop.sc/replay/13743571 (prefix it with http colon slash slash, I had to take it out because I otherwise can’t post links on the forums, yet). On of my tank ranks up at level 3 at 25:20, though scrubbing is really slow because of all the zombie units.

Should I have gotten the achievement, and Is this a bug, or am I misunderstanding something?

I just made sure I went over the limit and got it. Took me forever because it takes too long for all units to tank at once

Unfortunately, to get the achievement, you would need to get ALL 50 supply of tanks to 3 stars, not just one of them. Which is why the achievement is much easier on brutal where there are just more enemies.

Alternatively, you can mass Aegis Guard (marauders) because they take the least experience to hit 3 stars by far, and are arguably Mengsk’s best unit anyways with one of the highest dps/supply in the game, on top of splash damage, on top of effectively 825 hp, and they are massable. For scale, 1 Aegis Guard at 3 stars has more dps than a fully upgraded rattlesnake out of Tychus. Yes, seriously. And since they have AoE, they are very helpful for pushing in on DoN when your tanks are unsieged.

Another thing, wait, good macro, control groups, actually getting 3/3… I joke about all the good players being on hard rather than brutal, but dang. Good on you. Only critical mistake was making no medivacs. And also, I would recommend experimenting with is maybe put the tanks and troopers together in one control group, and ALSO put the tanks in a separate control group of their own. Makes it easier to keep your army altogether.

Also, just a quick tip since you seemed to have a problem with this, if ever you find your army caught without detection as Mengsk you can grab 10 troopers and build a missile turret in 3 seconds flat.

The amount of experience to get 50 supply to rank 3 doesn’t depend on the unit, because the amount of experience needed for a unit depends on supply. so 5 PoAs or 11 Aegis+Tank will take the same experience needed.

The achievement means you will need to have enough rank 3 royal guards that take up 50 supply or more total.

Do this in VL on brutal (beefy attack waves with a lot of hybrids dropping a ton of exp). Dead of Night is a bad map for this achievement because the infested civilians don’t drop any royal guard exp (zero supply non-heroic units give zero RG exp).

Always try to have at least one royal guard below rank 3 at all time to soak every point of exp possible.

Don’t all clear; partially clear the main base then pull back to let Amon rebuild, then clear it again for extra royal guard exp.

If you have a partner willing to drag out the game a few minutes, chain of ascension is by far the easiest map for this

So wait, do you have to get rank 3 on all 50-supply-worth of Royal Guard at the same time?! Or is it just:

Get 50 supply of Royal Guard to reach rank 3. They can each reach rank 3 at any point in time, so long as all 50 supply-wroth of Rank 3 RG are alive at the same time?

Heh, I usually play brutal :stuck_out_tongue: played that level veeeery dirrectly, to try to prioritize gas for tanks

Intentional, saving gas for tanks for acheivement.

That’s a great idea. Usually I have my tanks tagged onto thors to follow them, but that doesn’t work well with troopers who die all the time.

Great idea! Thanks for all your advice

Correct. If you own 50 supply worth of rank 3 units, you get the achievement.

Got it!

It’s quite easy, really. Particularly with a Swann ally, for the extra gas.

In general, the 200 some gas from a pair of medivacs and their upgrades is going to do a lot more to keep your important units alive by virtue of having a lot more cannon fodder available than the extra tank would do. Losing a rank 3 tank is really painful.
