Maru did not play well today

Maru’s kind of a washout tbh.

You’re kind of a washout.

Probably fatigued from taking so many performance enhancing drugs - caffeine included.

Feels like this game was balanced around jacked-in super pros, from my perspective anyway. It’s far too demanding.

By the way, Maru looked plain bored playing against heromarine. Standardized mirror elo rankings show Maru is a sigma 3.2 outlier (the best player in 1400 players). Serral by comparison in ZvZ is a 2.7 (the best in 285). That’s measuring them on a bell curve in their mirror matchup performance, basically, compared to other pro players. So yeah you can bet the farm Maru was bored facing against “big” gabe. Just about the only person who can give him a run for his money is Innovation, but he retired. Unfortunately we won’t have any top-tier TvTs for a long time (if ever again). RIP sc2.

Inno’s macro TvT was far below Maru’s. TY was the only one that could actually play long games against Maru and even he really began to struggle as the game clock reached a higher number.

TvT is just a boring matchup though. Heromarine also loves throwing won games.

Yeah I don’t buy that garbage. I still remember the year when Innovation won IEM, starleague, GSL v The World, and Code S. Innovation plowed through maru, byun and TY in one tournament alone. I remember the series against TY most of all. Innovation was behind almost every single game and won it out through grinding a long game. This game for example:

Gumiho was the man to stop Inno and he’s back.

Gumiho is trash. All you have to do is contrast his bio play vs his mech play. Simple marine micro is just too much to ask for. NA ladder heroes at 4.8k can micro marines better. Gumiho was boosted by mech.

Innovation and Maru were the best TvT players of all time, period end of story. Ty isn’t in the same universe. Neither is byun. Both were absolutely clobbered by either Maru or Innovation anytime they met. Ty vs Maru in GSL finals. Innovation vs TY in GSL v The World. Innovation vs Byun in GSL v The World. Etc etc.

I remember Innovation completely clowned on Byun during the height of the 3 rax reaper builds. It was 2 rax in TvT. Well Innovatin held Byun’s proxy 2 rax one game, then clowned on Byun the next game with Byun’s own proxy 2 rax build. Alphachad.jpg

TvT is going to be plain boring to watch if “big” gabe’s quality of play is the garbage viewers are going to have to consume. Maru could practically duct tape the mouse to his foot and take a nap and still win.

Ever since mass raven has become popular as an endgame TvT unit composition, Maru has been untouchable in lategame TvT. He’s just so much better at late game control than anyone else, the game basically revolves around killing him before he gets to it. It’s a funny way of thinking about a mirror match up.

Look at the most recent results, Maru plows through Innovation.

Innovation stopped competing after 2018. When he beat Serral in early 2019 there was a noticeable drop in his play and he still managed to be the only player who beat Serral in a premier event in a TvZ or PvZ. He didn’t win a single tournament after that.

Maru finally beat Serral, but zerg is trash in this patch. Innovation did it before the nerfs, well after his (innovation’s) peak. Innovation is the best TvZ player to ever exist, period end of story. TvP was his weak point.

I only started paying attention to the pro scene again in late 2018 I think. I can’t really talk about anything before that. Also you’re wrong about players not being able to beat Serral. Even before the onslaught of Zerg nerfs, Stats beat Serral in the 2019 Asus Rog.

That was after a round of zerg nerfs.

Which ones, exactly?

Just an example. TvZ basically unaffected by these changes. Protoss gets massive buffs through the roof in all matchups. Zerg gets a buffed nydus worm that is latter (before stats v serral) nerfed to where you can easily kill it with 1 stalker.

I think you mean the hydra dps nerf.

Yeah their yearly redesign doesn’t seem to be listed. It absolutely eviscerated Zerg in ZvP but gave zerg a nydus to compensate which was later nerfed to where it was basically impossible to get a nydus up unless your opponent was literally retarded.

Regardless, TvZ was basically unchanged when Innovation beat Serral in WESG. He’s the only terran or protoss to take a tournament from Serral during the peak of Zerg’s power, and that was well past his “prime”. That was the last major tournament he really tried hard for. After that you could tell he was done and was just coasting enough to keep sponsors etc.

I would argue that Classic and Maru pushed the start of his peak 3 months later.

Yeah, in 2019 Zerg was still broken against Protoss. These aren’t anything close to gutting the 50 range broodlord, unbeatable nydus and infested Terrans.

Do you mean when Maru 3-0ed Serral in 2018? When was Serral’s “peak,” exactly? A lot of his success is off the back of either Zerg being unbeatable or having to play against Korean Terrans with minimum 150 MS. His legacy is what hyped up Clem and Clem regularly loses to players like Solar, Ragnorak, Armani, etc.

Looking through the patch notes, zerg was buffed in vs T between 2018 and 2019. So Innovation in fact clowned on Serral after 2018 (it being when Serral clean-swept every premier WCS event) when zerg had been buffed. So yeah Innovation is the only person to beat Serral during the height of Zerg’s power. It was only nerfs, nerfs and more nerfs from then on and every victory vs serral since then just doesn’t hold the same weight.

Innovation is the best TvT and TvZ player ever, Maru comes in a close second in TvT and is definitely the best TvP player of all time.
