Already well on my way kiddo. This solution has an 1.0-R2 value of 0.44. The computer has to shrink it to 0 for a perfect solution. My record so far is 0.17. I don’t have a lot of CPU time to give to it since it’s a hobby project and it takes away from my server cluster which is simulating much more important questions.
Once you know the right answer you can analyze it to find out why it’s the right answer. That’s why Hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy was so on-point. They built a computer to answer the question to everything. Then it spat out the answer and it was 42. But they were so confused by this that they then built a computer to compute the question for the answer. Well that’s exactly how machine learning works. Once you find an answer you can do some analysis to figure why it’s the answer and build a proof much easier that way.
What makes this problem challenging is the self-referential logic. It’s a problem everywhere in math and science. For example, the n body problem. This is a self-referential algorithm that you can basically treat as a nested tree of outcomes. So it’s an application of graph theory. 3x+1 can be expanded to 3(3x+1)+1 and then to 3(3(3(3x+1)+1)+1)+1. So the question is how many times you have to expand this equation to reach 1 as the output. It’s a question of the structure of equations and whether you can simplify this structure to compute if for an initial value of X you get 1 eventually and if you can prove you can do this for all integers. This would be easy to compute if not for the binary step that evaluates and branches the tree of outcomes by if the current value is even or odd. THAT’s the hard part.
