Symmetra's lock-on primary fire is a core part of her identity. I plead, please don't remove it

I think her weapon will work like huge laser - like Moira’s grasp.

The amount of people in this thread saying “just adapt and move on,” or “it’s not that bad, I know someone who’s disabled who can do it” is insane. People are missing the point: removing Symmetra’s lock-on is HOSTILE DESIGN. It’s design specifically making it harder for disabled people to play. It’s not about whether disabled players can or “should” adapt (spoiler: even if they can, they shouldn’t have to), it’s about the devs making a conscious effort to make it harder for certain players to play. Don’t back down on this, you’re in the right.

In my opinion, choose your words more carefully.
Symmetra’s lock on is what you connect to, rather than the character. Yes, Symmetra is a unique character but so is all of the other 26 heroes. Mcree’s Revolver is a part of him because he’s “The Cowboy” you expect him to have a Revolver. Hanzo’s bow is apart of him because he’s “The Archer”. Symmetra’s Hero acrchitype is “The Architect” so a tracking lazer is not the first thing you think about. Knowing she is a hard light architect makes a difference. Most people are not thinking, a tracking lazer, but more of Utility Creator. Which is exactly what she has and will bring to the game.

Okay, disability aside, I still think there is plenty this character can offer to you outside of locking on to someone and running around with a general look of their direction.

Here’s a list of other things you can do:

  • Create clever flanking routes for your team.
  • Melt barriers with your primary fire
  • Deny space with Alt-fire
  • Deploy sentry turrets in clever areas (or even as flanks mid fight).

It honestly sounds like you were holding yourself back with your older playstyle of Symmetra if the lock-on with primary fire was the core of the character for you.

Don’t hold yourself back so much.

The three of you are going to have to get over it

No, no they aren’t “in the right”, since there are plenty of alternatives which play very similarly with no impact on one’s disability, however with her time split between Sym, Mei, Torb, Ana, and Winston, I don’t buy that there is a disability that would have someone be able to play those characters without being able to play the new Sym, or Moira, or Zarya.

I suspect that they actually like to play in quick play and capitalize on the mayhem by playing cancer heroes that, while garbage in comp, are dominant in the disorganized, disheveled world of quick play, and not being dominant there really is the actual issue.

Just wanted to say again, don’t listen to the people crying about how Symmetra’s accessibility or how she isn’t “meta” offends them on a personal level – the amount of anger they’re experiencing over the idea that the game might not be designed 100% for them just proves that they’re small-minded and petty. Probably Overwatch is all they have and thinking about larger issues like accessibility in games makes them feel small.

i do feel bad that it might be a bit harder for you to use her, but i dont think itll be bad at all, it sounds liek its gonna be a really thick beam so youll need to be in their general area
if you havent id suggest trying a few other heroes that are less aim intesnive as well (ive been playing them lately because of a hand injury making it so my cursor shakes back and forth when i aim) brigitte is amazing for me with it and she might be good for you too
as for the identity of sym i see her as a user of hard light as her identity, not the lock on, so in my mind its kinda like she powered up her gun but had to sacrifice the lock on to do so

If you think her gun is her identity explain why it only has like 1 spray depicting it meanwhile her turrets and teleporter can be seen through multiple sprays, make up most of her value, and literally have voicelines referecing them?

That whole statement could be interpreted from the other point of view.

No the mindset here isn’t to hurt the disabled. There are other characters in the game that don’t require aim. The issue is that Sym has never been meta. She has always been seen as a troll pick because of how niche she is. The rework is to make her more applicable to most situations. It’s meant to improve your hero but obviously you can’t please everyone

You’re right, I’ll edit it so that people who think the idea of a character not being meta is unacceptable know the comment isn’t for them.

I’m sorry but they are no specifically designing her to be harder to play for disabled people. You are so wrong here. They are trying to make the hero better. Her auto lock on gun prevents them from doing that. That’s it. Everything you are saying is ridiculous conjecture

Wow, you seem to know a lot about accessibility in game design! So if changing Symmetra’s lock on beam DOESN’T make it harder to play the character, why are so many people complaining about it as it is now?

You seem to not know what conjecture is so let me educate you. You take making symmetra harder to play and then extrapolate that to “design specifically to make it harder for disabled people to play”. Even called it “hostile design”. Wait what? Show me where they specifically said we are doing this to target disabled people. Please show us the quote. You can’t though because your statement is ridiculous conjecture. You don’t have any basis to make that statement other than your flawed opinion based on limited knowledge.

New symmetra gun is going to be so much more fun and so much better for the game. I am extremely happy to see it leave.

I love Symmetra, and I also love Zarya. I have little issue with the change of aiming requirements (assuming they increase the range on it)

BUT! Seeing as this has been her primary fire since the dawn of time, they really should have made her primary more like Moira’s (with less range). Moira is called a no aim hero but her beam breaks quite easily and would be a nerf to Sym’s auto lock without completely changing her playstyle.

Don’t change symmetra. Please. This rework looks lame.

At least fix colorblind mode first so I can see the enemies you want me to aim at.

This is actually exactly what I was coming into the forums to suggest - making it similar to Moira’s primary would nerf its lock-on nature, but still let those of us who can’t aim for shtte and/or have kinda crap hardware still be able to play her, as well as not completely changing her primary fire style.

Of course we get another one of you.

Other people have already brought up multiple reasons why ‘git gud’ is not a productive contribution to this discussion. Either actually bring something to the table, or let the grownups talk.
