No, I have sympathy for people who have disabilities. I really do. And I know this is going to sound incentive but a game of this size shouldn’t be balanced with the needs of a minority if that means damaging the game. Having a DPS with a lock on ability will either make them do too much damage or not enough.
My original point of saying most Sym mains are worried about aiming is I’ve seen so many people insist that this is part of her true core identity that makes Symmetra, Symmetra. When it’s just a feature, her identity has nothing to do with the fact that she can lock on to people with a laser.
I mean, let’s just remove her gun. Let’s remove her turrets too. Let’s give her a long range gun that shoots bullets and stealth instead. That will still surely feel like playing Symmetra, right?
This is like saying that McCree’s gun is not a part of his identity.
She is her laser, her turrets, her teleports, and her shields.
How is this not exactly like giving Hanzo a sniper rifle? Sure it is a long range weapon that can headshot, but it’s not the same. You couldn’t do that to Hanzo and still call him Hanzo. Her weapon will operate completely differently.
You’re missing the point. The problem with auto-aim weapons is they don’t scale with skill at all. That means that for it to be at all useful in the higher ranks, it would need to be broken in the lower ranks. When you’re trying to make Symmetra into more of a DPS, her gun needs to scale with skill, because otherwise she is going to be terribly unbalanced.
If you think Symmetra’s weapon is as important to her character as McCree’s revolver or Hanzo’s bow is to them then you really should learn more about Symmetra as a character. Symmetra’s gun is inconsequential and means nothing to her character or identity. Her core identity lies with her abilities.
Not every character’s weapon is connected to them to make them a full character. Sometimes weapons are just there. Some characters’ abilities are where their identity lies. And idk why you’re so worried she’s still going to have a laser.
That is honestly insulting, to say that I don’t know enough about a character that I eat, sleep, and breathe. Just because you have a difference of opinion doesn’t give you the right to just say I don’t know what I am talking about.
I am not talking about character wise, I know her primary story is about her and her hard light. I’m talking kit wise. Symmetra as she is now I know and love. If they change her primary fire, I’m worried she won’t feel like Symmetra anymore.
I have a lot of fun with her sneaking up on enemies and taking them out with the lock on weapon while trying to dodge their attacks to stay alive. It won’t work the same when I’m having to worry more about keep facing the enemy.
TBH, I think the only core thing about Sym identity is the fact she is an architect. Which, itself, is incredibly flexible concept.
If reworking her gun is what it takes to turn her into something playable - so be it. Because now it plainly sucks. Also, I kinda like the idea of weaponized laser-cutter.
A little off topic but… You mentioned that you have a disability that inhibits your ability to aim.
If you have the funds, you should look into setting up some low latency eye/head tracking for aiming. Wherever your head is pointed is the general direction of your crossair, then you can use your eyes to tweak exactly where your crossairs are.
I have no idea if stuff like this exists, but I am working on getting my associates in engineering science so I can transfer to a university to study computer science. I can already use modeling software since I am about half way finished with my engineering associates and I am about to start studying computer science on my own so I am not completely lost at university. Anyways, in due time I should have enough programming skills to start working on the software portion of this. If I can manage to make this as accurate as tracking real objects with your eyes/head is, this will break everything. Most importantly though, it will let everyone, even people with certain motor ailments, enjoy games to their fullest.
Do you have discord or something? If you’re comfortable sharing it, message me on the battle launcher at Sushi#1189. I probably wont even have a working prototype done for more than a year or two, but I would like to have the ability to reach out to you once one is ready. Having feedback from people who would benefit from a device like this would be awesome.
I disagree. To me, her core identity is turrets and her teleporter.
Her weapon is holding her back from being relevant at all levels of play.
I don’t mean to sound heartless, but a hero should not be designed with disabilities in mind. A hero should be designed to be balanced at the top level of play, i.e. assuming someone with very good aim and very good gamesense.
I just meant that when I first encountered Symmetra, I could instantly relate with her and could tell by her history and personality that she was different like me.
The comic then just cemented it. But yeah I didn’t need the comic to tell me.
Wait until she actually hits the PTR. No one can have a good visualisation of what she’s capable of doing with her kit until she is available for testing.
So yes, even if you have a disability, you might still be able to play her with her re-work. You might not even need the lock-on aspect.
