I made a “slightly” lengthier version about the same topic:
You log into Overwatch, go to comp and there are 3 checkboxes of which you pick one: Damage, Tank or Support. If you do not pick any of them you get into regular comp-matchmaking. However, if you pick any of them the game will now try to queue you with others who put a tick in those checkboxes. For example, if you choose Damage you will be put together with 1 other Damage, 2 Tanks and 2 Supports. Sidenote: During the game roles are not locked. Im not sure whether the rules should include that rolequeue lobbys should only play against other RQ lobbys. To keep it simple I would rather say no and see how it goes, then adjust if needed.
Is this system perfect? No.
Is it better than completely random matchmaking? Yes, Im pretty sure.
Is it more convenient and accessible than LFG? Certainly.
It might sometimes result in awkward situations where you have 2 Mercy or Reinhardt one-tricks or where someone queued for Support and then picks Damage heros, but Im willing to bet that ultimately a simple system like this will make for more enjoyable games overall. I’d rather face situations like described above every few games or so than making a 50-50 gamble every single time I queue for ranked. Which sadly is the current state.
Also, it should be kept as simple and accessible as possible to avoid another situation like we have with LFG. So only 3 roles (Damage, Tank and Support) and no locked roles. Alternatively they could add another type of report for role-q for when someone plays a different role than what they queued up for. And if the system notices that person is often being reported for that its blocking role-q for that individual.
