Random red connectivity icon

Hello Blizzard, on the last few days I noticed some lag spikes mid game on EU servers (im connected to my router with Ethernet cable).
The lag spikes can occuer after few mins of playing or even after like 20-30mins.
it randomly spike to around 200+, the game freezes for a moment, I see a red line with a connection cable icon on my screen and after few seconds the ping goes back to normal and the game runs again till the next spike.
sometimes It even crash mid game to “Lost connection to the game servers” page.
when I tried to reinstall Overwatch I noticed another issue with the download speed, I used to download Overwatch with 115-125MB per second and now my download speed is only 20mb per second.
when I test my download speed on Speedtest by Ookla website I see that everything is fine, 940mb download speed.

things I already tried to do:

  • Reinstalled Overwatch - still same ping spikes.
  • Rinstalled Windows and Drivers - no changes.
  • Tried different connection cable - no changes.
  • Release Renew flush DNS - no changes.
  • called my internet technical support, they said everything is fine, they opened ports, reset my router, reset port - still no changes. about the download speed issue they said everything is fine, it must be a problem with Blizzard.
I have to add that my router is new (2 months old).
I do really need ur help to investigate it, im helpless, I really dont understand if the problem is my connection or anything or its just some issues with the servers.

those are the WinMTR tests on both EU servers (while making the tests I didnt notice the lag spike).

Howdy Royal,

The connection tests appear fine. Do these issues happen while using a mobile hotspot or free VPN?

hey Zenlaka and thanks for answering.

no, im not using mobile hotspot or VPN.
just normal connection to the router with a cable. never had this issue before with this router, 2 months already.

I dont know what cause the random spikes honestly, or what makes my download speed slower than usual when im trying to download Overwatch again.

do you want me to do a WinMTR test and wait with it open till I notice a lag spike? will it help to investigate it?

I meant you could try testing a hotspot or VPN to see if these issues continue happening. Running the MTR test while the lag spike happens would help though. Just stop and restart the MTR test every 10 minutes or so until you are experiencing the lag spikes.

okay I will test it with MTR open and post the results here.

Replying back so you can do that - keep in mind the forums may not let you bump your posts if nobody has replied to you (it’s a flood control thing). Any luck with the winMTR?

I am still trying to play while having WinMTR open.
I had the lag spike issue again today but I forgot to start the WinMTR test.
still checking it and about to post the results.

p.s - the download speed issue is fixed, I reset my router again and it fixed it. but I still have the lag spike issue.
I still dont know if the problem is my home internet or the servers cause I saw some other people complaining about lag spikes and disconnects.

Royal,

For perspective’s sake, people have always and will always until the end of time complain of lag/latency. A large number of players play the game, so we are always trying to help folks figure those issues out.

There are dozens of possible causes of latency and disconnections. The test we’re running may help us determine if there’s something that you can fix, your ISP can fix, or we can fix. That’s the biggest reason we want to try to make sure you catch it red handed. If we get that data it rules some things out at the least.

ok this is the test with the lag spike with this IP - > 185.60.114.159

WinMTR v0.92 GPL V2 by Appnor MSP - Fully Managed Hosting & Cloud Provider

Hey there Royal,

The tests that didn’t have the lag spike vs the tests that did look pretty much the same. To me this says the problem isn’t related specifically to routing or packet loss, and that we may want to look more at software on the computer/router.

There are services that are commonly called “Network Prioritization” or “Quality of Service” that can put limiters on things like game downloads. To some folks this can sound like a bad thing but they’re actually very common and good things to have. For example if the game download used 100% of your bandwidth it would make all other devices connected to the network slow down! No more streaming Netflix while downloading if there was no QOS feature!

Disabling these features temporarily as a test to see if that helps to resolve the problem is normally ideal. Though if that does work you’d normally want to reconfigure the settings instead of outright disabling it. That way you’re not watching something or playing a different game, then suddenly a massive download nukes the bandwidth from orbit due to lack of restrictions!

Common programs for the computer are:

  • Killer Control Center
  • HP Connection Optimizer / OmenCap
  • Alienware Center
  • XFastLan

These are just a few examples. Basically just look for anything that advertises networking features!

As for the router/modem, well, each one is different so it’s hard to explain. My best advice there would be to login and check through the menu for any existing features. The login for most routers can be found here.

I do hope the info helps. If there’s anything else you might need just let us know.

Hello, thank you for the answer
tomorrow my ISP is going to try to solve it for me by installing new fiber optic internet cable.
also might just replace the router aswell and see.

Royal,

Replying back just so you can let us know if you still need help after that is done. (Depending on your trust level the forums may not allow you to reply to your own post if you were the most recent post, as a spam control measure.) For now leave this one be and reach back out if you still need us after all that maintenance is done!

Hey so my ISP guy was at my home.
he said everything is ok with my internet, he checked the optical fiber and said I have no problems.
he replaced my internet port and the cable which connected between my router and my optical fiber.
I loged overwatch today, played for like 2 hours and then again, middle of the match got kicked of the game with a red line and the connection icon in the middle of the screen.
I went back in game, and played normally till the end.
started another match and had the issue again but didnt DC.

I am really clueless, I dont know what cause the problem as everything looks fine.
I never used any VPN, I just normally used my internet.
my router is new, everything is new, pretty much didnt change anything, I dont know what cause it.
I wouldnt post my problem on the forums if it would be just a random DC, but its almost 2 weeks with the same problem.

about the WinMTR test, what IP to choose while testing?

For Overwatch in particular, the IP address can be pulled within the game using the network graph CTRL+SHIFT+N. The WinMTR support article goes through this if step by steps are needed:

this is another WinMTR test. I had the lag spike issue while testing and here I also waited 5 mins after as explained.

I have to add that after looking at https:/ /us.battle.net/support/en/article/7779,
the red icon means:
“This icon indicates that the client has not heard from your lobby or from the game server for an extended period of time and that a disconnection is likely.”

I tested with this IP: 185.60.114.159

Hello, I have another thread about the same issue here:

I couldnt bump it so I made a new one, would be nice if u answer me there and remove this one thanks.

Hey, Royal. Sorry for the delay here. It looks like this could be part of an issue with the home network or possible with the Equinix France peering. Could you provide the model of the router/modem devices?

Could you also provide a looking glass test to check out?

The model of my router is: Technicolor DGA2232

the technician was at my home and he said everything is fine, if u can be sure its my internet I will make them replace everything I just dont want to do this just because something with the servers isnt right.

Thank you for the details, Royal! The looking glass oddly isn’t pulling any data after the server and the router should be fine, there aren’t any known or past issues that should cause a problem.

Do you have a separate modem? If so, can you try bypassing the router to test? Do you see any improvements with the lag spikes if you could try an alternative connection or VPN?

As for the Equinix France server, there are no known issues with the servers or our peers. This does not mean that there isn’t a problem, just that we haven’t seen enough reports or gathered enough data to determine there is and where the problem is starting. In order for our technical support team to escalate an issue to our network and peering teams, we need more data and reports to do so. It does look like the Equinix peering might be part of the cause so I will be vigilant and keep my eye out and monitor for any similar reports.

Hi thank you for the answer.
my second level support ISP changed my connection from DHCP to PPPoE.
I am still in a test to see if it works or not.

I looked at -| pr01.eqfr5.blizzardonline. net - 1 | 2556 | 2551 | 63 | 72 | 196 | 69 from the winmtr test and I see that the problem starts here which is eqfr server. sent less packets and recived even less isnt it enough to understand the problem is with blizzard and not my network?

do I have to deal with a problem in ur server just because not many people reports an issue?!

if the problem is in my side id do everything to fix it but according to the test it looks like a problem in pr01.eqfr5.blizzardonline. net.
I dont have any issues in Youtube, browsing the web or playing PS4 games.

I am really cluless as I dont really know what cause the problem, my network, router, ISP, fiber or blizzard server.

EDIT - changing from DHCP to PPPoE didnt help. ill replace the router and see

EDIT 2 - I replaced my router to a new one, less than 1 day old and I still have the problem.
my internet is fine its 100% from ur side.
