Overwatch 2 on MacOS Advice

I understand that Overwatch 2 is not officially supported on macOS but I believe the points I am about to raise are worth your attention and consideration, as they directly impact a portion of your dedicated player base.

Until recently, Overwatch 2 was playable on macOS devices through CrossOver, offering a flawless gaming experience for many users like myself. This workaround was a lifesaver for those of us who frequently travel and rely on our MacBooks for gaming. Unfortunately, following a specific game update around 2–3 months ago, it has become impossible to play Overwatch 2 using CrossOver.

From what I’ve heard, the teams at CrossOver and Apple are aware of the issue, but it remains unresolved. I wanted to ask if Blizzard has any plans to address this or collaborate with CrossOver to restore functionality.

To be candid, I believe there is an opportunity here for Blizzard to adopt a more constructive approach because; Overwatch’s rivals, such as Marvel Rivals, are already playable on macOS through CrossOver previews, which makes the lack of compatibility for Overwatch 2 all the more noticeable. This creates a risk of Overwatch players, myself included, gravitating toward alternatives if this situation remains unaddressed.

I have always been a passionate fan of Overwatch, but as someone who cannot always access a desktop, the inability to play on my MacBook, that I actually used to play perfectly, has been frustrating so I hope Blizzard will recognize the significance of this issue and explore possible solutions, whether through collaboration with CrossOver or by other means. Resolving this would not only delight a portion of your loyal community but also set a positive precedent as we enter 2025.

Best Regards!

I fully agree my friend they need to bring it as soon as they can!

If I may clarify it isn’t working on the newest version of Crossover Preview?! My Crossover subscription has lapsed so I cannot test this!

I highly recommend Boosteroid as an alternative!

We need a native Mac client already for Overwatch. Streaming OW is unplayable and the newer Macs are more than capable of running it.

A native Mac client would be hugely welcome!

I wouldn’t say that cloud streaming is unplayable but I definitely think the M4 mac mini is a very capable little gaming device and the Apple Silicon family of devices are just waiting for developers to tap into their potential!

Adapting to a niche market for gaming is never going to be considered. This is because it’s not worth the investment in the longterm.

The game used to have its mac version ages ago, but realistically speaking, unless Apple’s gaming structure ressembles more the standard, there’s realistically no way most gaming companies will advocate for mac versions.

P.s. before I get a reply saying “it’s powerful enough”. You don’t understand developing games at all for another version of the game and mac is absolute jank in comparison to console versions.

Every single gaming platform ever once started out small - Rome wasn’t built overnight!

There was a time when the Nintendo switch had only a few games at launch and yet now it has the most games of any console!

Switch barely runs OW2… but there’s def more people playing a Switch than people playing on a Mac.

I remember arguing with Hulk on the mac problems of the game.

It’s still not worth investing time, effort and money on a market this niche.

Apple has yet to prove itself be good at a majority stake for gaming, even after all these years of absolutely not gaining trust from most gamers.

There was a time when gaming on PC was considered niche - Gaming platforms didn’t become huge overnight my friends!

By adapting Overwatch to the Mac as well as other games - hopefully Marvel Rivals - the “Macs are not for gaming” paradigm can and will be overcome!

It’s not for gaming in mind. Unless Apple purposely designs a whole branch of “Macs for gaming”, it’s never going to be.

Apple’s ecosystem is not friendly for developers.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for a native client. But have you tried parallels? I’m not sure if that would work or not, but it’s worth a try.

PC platform was not originally made for gaming in mind and yet games were made for it over time this is a long process that requires a shift in the paradigm and Apple has actually shifted their marketing to promote the gaming features as of late - they also made a game porting toolkit to assist with the creation of these ports - so they do seem to see a future for gaming on their platform!

:point_up_2:

The difference with what you’re talking is that people envisioned gaming on a computer at a time when console were pretty much not-so-much powered pieces of computers.

Apple never actually made history for that jump, for Apple to become a “gaming” kingdom as pretty much all the Apple fans suggest, it would require a major shift in brand thinking.

Because as it is right now, if you thinking gaming it’s PC/Console, not Apple. If I think Apple, it’s for looks, art or flexing my cash for vastly underperfoming pieces of hardware introduced as “brand new”.

EDIT: they gotta earn trust, lower prices and maybe it’ll happen, but it’s not for today (and probably not for the next 5 to 10 years with the current decisions at Apple).

There’s already been a shift in the mentality at Apple more to cater to the gamers they even mentioned features being used by gaming enthusiasts in a keynote presentation and they have iterated on their GPTK having released a new version entirely 2.0 and even enticed huge game publishers like CD Project Red to bring big titles like Cyberpunk 2077!

The Mac Mini M4 is also widely considered to be well priced in the market as a value proposition!

The future is bright for Mac Gaming!

I don’t think you understand.

The only shift in mentality is catering to the already existing Apple playerbase… It doesn’t attract anyone else. It’s technically growing… by nothing.

They likely are paying for those games to be developed on their ecosystems… Because I doubt a ton they are doing this for the “fans”.

Looking at the price, I prefer building a PC with DDR5 hardware for similar ranges.

EDIT: I still would even opt for a PC because I can trust myself in the repairing process, something Apple’s philosophy hates to do. It’s not user-friendly.

For existing Mac players only.

Playing OW2 on an overpriced toaster? You can’t be serious.

As a majority Windows user I would gladly switch over to MacOS for all purposes and sell my Windows machine if I could do all the gaming needs on my Mac so I think the idea that there exists this exclusive “Mac playerbase” or “Mac-only userbase” might be erroneous because players can switch between platforms at will provided they know that the games they want to play will be available on a different platform and I think the Mac machines really are so beautiful they can attract people from all kinds of audiences and since they’re more affordable nowadays even the younger crowd can gravitate towards it!

I should also mention that the RAM included in the Apple Silicon machines is very fast!

These seem a lot like your opinions. But, I just got an M4 Mini when it launched and my PC has been collecting dust since, not even bothering to boot it up play Overwatch.

Knowingly I will have 1/32th of my games playable on an Apple ecosystem, I would never make that jump, not even 10 years ago or 10 years in the future.

Still not user-friendly, I prefer swapping my gears than that piece of hardware being compacted. I used to code things, while Windows is a mess, still would do it on theirs than macOS garbonzo environment.

I mean they are, but go ask any gamers without a mac that same question and you,re looking more-or-so the same answers.

I would never buy a mac for OW2 and if I was developer at Team 4 with Blizzard while people are being fired from their job, developing OW2 for a brand ecosystem as niche as Apple is, would mean I have to invest into something that might and probably will end up being non-profitiable.

What you guys want is not what the market’s reality is. Think as a corporation before thinking for yourselves here. If they invest for mac it’s not because of the players, it’s because of the money.

You can buy at lest 4 PCs that can run OW just fine for those money you spend on a mac.
