Marvel Rivals is running flawlessly on macOS with CrossOver.
Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 was working too—until Blizzard decided to break compatibility.
So, maybe it’s time for us to take our money elsewhere. MR, here we go!
PSA for Those Who Think Macs Can’t Game:
There are THOUSANDS of players on macOS, and the data proves it.
Let’s Talk About Data:
Overwatch 2 Had a HUGE Mac Player Base (Before Blizzard Killed It)
The CrossOver patch that boosted OW2’s performance on macOS was downloaded 1,704 times—JUST on the last version . (Check the numbers yourself in api-github-com/repos/Marqasa/overwatch-crossover-patch/releases)
Only advanced users install performance boosters manually, meaning the actual number of macOS players was easily over 5,000 before Blizzard broke it.
Overwatch 2 has constant searches on AppleGamingWiki, proving there’s ongoing demand for running it on macOS. (See for yourself - applegamingwiki-com/wiki/Overwatch_2)
Macs are More Affordable Than a High-End PCs — and Outperform Many of Them
Macs are NOT expensive compared to gaming PCs.
A MacBook Air or entry-level MacBook Pro can run games just as well as mid-tier gaming PCs .
If you go for a MacBook Pro M3 Max , it can DESTROY an RTX 4080 in many workloads and can match it in gaming —all while using a fraction of the energy. I ven tried running cyberpunk with ray traying (through X64 and Directx Translation not nativily) and it works flawlessly
Energy Efficiency: Macs something uses 1/10th of the Power of a Gaming PC
A gaming PC with an RTX 4080 or a console like an Xbox Series X uses between 600W to 1200W of energy.
Meanwhile, a MacBook running the same game does it less than 100W .
On battery, a MacBook can game for HOURS with ZERO power draw from the outlet. Try that with a windows gaming laptop—it won’t last 30 minutes unplugged.
Parallels Users? Even More Players on macOS
Besides CrossOver, THOUSANDS of users also run Overwatch 2 through Parallels, a Windows VM solution for Mac.
While Parallels delivers lower performance (~60 FPS vs. 120 FPS on CrossOver), it proves that even more people are gaming on macOS .
Macs Handle Game Emulation Exceptionally Well—And Native Games Are Next-Level
Overwatch 2 (non-native) runs at 100+ FPS on ultra settings on my MacBook M3 Max in 900p via CrossOver .
Counter-Strike 2 (Native) hits almost 300 FPS with 1080p+ all ultra settings.
When OW developers support Metal natively, Mac gaming is BETTER than PC gaming in power efficiency and performance.
Blizzard, The Ball is in Your Court
Overwatch WAS working. You broke it.
We have the hardware. We have the player base. We have the money.
But maybe now, Marvel Rivals is the better place to spend it.
TL;DR :
Mac gaming is real, growing, and damn powerful. Stop pretending we don’t exist.
Pretty sure Mac total userbase is way overshadowed by Windows and etc (where gaming is more of a focus) for any of what you said to matter.
And of that entire mac userbase (which is small), even less are gaming. Anyone I know with a mac is editing.
They’ll be absolutely fine without it.
There ya go.
I estimate a large number of users would happily switch to the Mac platform if they could play their favourite games such as Overwatch natively without having to go through complicated workarounds!
Mac computers are very energy efficient when gaming compared to the competition!
At the moment my solution is cloud gaming services like GFN and Boosteroid but not everyone has these available conveniently!
Here is Cyberpunk 2077 running on that exact configuration. It doesn’t even hit 60fps and the resolution is super low. Is it playable? Absolutely. Is it DESTROYING an RTX 4080? Absolutely not - not even close.
There are people who just despise the mac using experience, from shortcuts, unneeded icons on the screen, personalising options, system updating capabilities, hardware updating options without buying a full new machine to just personal needs.
Even if all the games in the world were available for mac, half or more of pc users would never swap to mac usage.
Almost everyone loves the beautiful Mac computers!
Especially because they run so efficiently and quietly compared to the competition!
Apple design is simply unmatched!
In fact studies show that using a Mac computer automatically increases one’s “coolness perception” and/or “swagger” by an estimated 50% compared to one’s peers!*
You can understand that “easily over 5,000” is nothing, right? Porting to mac then maintaining that port is a lot of resources, a lot of learning for a team, and for 5,000 players it’s just not worth it. That is a tiny number compared to the entire player base.
I have a mac that I work on and a PC for gaming. I’d imagine many mac owners are the same - either having a PC or console for gaming. The number of people who would require the port to mac in order to play the game must be tiny. Those people wanting it on the mac are already playing it on some other platform so where is the gain for Blizzard spending all that money and effort?
Erm… clears throat so… you know Blizzard Entertainment is owned by MICROSOFT now which makes WINDOWS which is a competitor to MacOS right? This request is like Apple asking Samsung to allow them to use their exact flip and fold phone model so Apple can make their own but with an apple logo on the back instead of Samsung. Think they’ll just hand it over and allow their biggest competitor to use their stuff?
Or another more “down to earth” example. This would be like PlayStation allowing Spiderman and God Of War on XBOX consoles. 2 of the biggest reasons people don’t get XBOX.
Go back to worshipping your weird little smooth white things that absolutely refuse to be compatible with anything because they can make you buy another one every year.
Mac people are almost as insufferable as linux people and for worse reasons.
Note… this isn’t windows VS whatever either. Mac PEOPLE are different than just people who use Mac stuff.
