I think I found a new hero (Yui Yamagami)

I haven’t seen anyone else make this connection yet.

After making a topic on every OW character ever, no matter how obscure EVERY single Overwatch character ever I noticed something. Yui. And her dog Mochi.

They’re inhabitants of Kanezaka. Yui runs the Mochi Pottery workshop, named after her dog.

Clue 1:
In this article:
https://www.dexerto.com/overwatch/jeff-kaplan-teases-overwatch-2-dog-hero-in-sequel-1522794/ Jeff says this:

“There is a big dog moment coming up. I’m not going to spoil it now, but there is a dog that people will fall in love with coming up.”

and also that the “dog belongs to a new hero we haven’t seen yet.”

Clue 2:
This article:
https://www.gameinformer.com/2019/11/05/details-on-an-unannounced-overwatch-2-hero
Where someone visited Blizzard’s offices and described some silhouettes they saw on a monitor. One was a girl with a fox-like hero companion. This could very well be Yui and her Mochi dog but just genetically altered and upgraded with powers.

Clue 3:

Jeff (talking about Kanezaka map) says:

“We’re gonna learn more, not only about our two favorite Shimada Brothers, but possibly some other people as well that relate to that group as well, so it should be interesting, there’s a lot of easter eggs in the map…”

If we look at anyone with close lore ties to the Shimada and Kanezaka, we find Asa and Toshiro Yamagami, blacksmith husband and wife. Asa became the blademaster for the Shimada Clan and taught Genji and Hanzo.

Toshiro was captured by the Hashimoto Clan and forced to make blades for them, and they used him as leverage to make Asa do their bidding in Kanezaka.

However they did let Toshiro craft and send a blade as a gift to their daughter. She would most likely be in Kanezaka like they were. And the only other female character we really know of is Yui.

This is even further connected into clue 2 because they person reporting on the silhouettes said the girl with the foxlike pet had a bladed weapon so she’s most likely melee

Clue 4:

This spray was added for doing the Kanezaka Challenge. Why would they add a random spray of a random girl?

She’s not random!
https://blizzardwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/13.Kanezaka.jpg

She’s pretty prominently featured in the Kanezaka map. This could very well be Yui, or the “fox girl” if Yui doesn’t end up leading anywhere.

To have a character prominently featured in two separate artworks, in a deathmatch map AND in a challenge spray, that kinda means something

Clue 5:

At 1:10 we see the cinematic for Sojourn that’s in-development, and there’s a tiny cute dog! Hmmmm…Is this possibly “pugtato”, Yui’s dog?

https://overwatch.fandom.com/wiki/Mochi
I know they look a little different but there’s A LOT of tiny cute dog’s stacking up in the lore. Orisa’s, Yui’s (Mochi), The one with Sojourn, Jeff’s “theres a big dog moment from a new hero that will make you fall in love with them”

I know there’s a little bit of a disconnect between a fox and a dog, and maybe they are two separate heroes in upcoming lore, but it seems a little redundant to feature a new hero with a dog companion whom we will learn about soon, as Jeff mentioned in 1st article,

and then to ALSO have another upcoming hero with a fox pet companion; with the amount of polish and carefulness they are taking with OW2, I don’t find it likely they’ll have such a large overlap of the same “girl with quadroped canine-like pet” twice in a row.

So either they’re the same hero, or there’s simply another different new hero who owns a dog that will be prominent in cutscenes. It could go either way but there’s mounting evidence pointing to one or the other.

I just have a feeling it will be Yui grown up. They don’t often make side characters for no reason, and especially don’t make a dedicated area and props and building for said side character in a map if they’re not important. Am I looking too far into this? Maybe :alien:

Probably because we have a year, likely longer, before any of this truly becomes relevant to us. I think people got bored of speculating for new heroes when they told us were weren’t getting anymore.

interesting. maybe the dog was mistaken for a fox, sucks for the people who wanted a kitsune neko, witch tho that sounds cool, seems maybe she will have a dog instead.

i feel as if the hype for this character has died down considering that we wont get her for a long time now, and that there isn’t very much left for us to go off of, such a shame since its sounds like it would be fun to talk about even if we wont get her for a while.

Yeah… I wanted a fox. I hate dogs. So this would be a huge bummer for me.

He didn’t necessarily say this. The quote was:

“It’s coming up, and there is a beloved dog that belongs to one of our Heroes that you’re going to learn more about.”

This could either be interpreted in the way you’re interpreting it, i.e. we’re going to learn about a new hero that has a beloved dog.

Or… it could mean “there is a beloved dog … that you’re going to learn more about”

I suspect it might be one of Moira’s dogs in an OW2 cinematic or something like that.
Edit: For reference this is how I picture the above moment

My personal wild bet I’ve had on this matter is good ol boi Mochi (who was always somewhat foxish looking dog) is going to end up heroically sacrifice himself for human in their hero launch trailer. Que fox goddess being moved and granting her healing foxy powers using Mochi as a container \o/

Hmm…sound theory…save it and see how you did…one…two…three years from now?

This could be a cool explanation too. There’s a fox graffiti in Kanezaka and Inari Fox statues near the town’s shrine.

At the same time, that seems like a little too fantasy for the game sadly, Overwatch has remained very squarely in science fantasy for the most part, and there hasn’t been straight up magic or deity beings or anything like that yet, aside from the Shimada dragon powers and whatever’s going on with the Iris, everything else is explained with science

Here’s another thought: Can the term dog be used colloquially to refer to foxes, similarly to how cat is used for lions etc.?

It was kinda implied that the new hero would have something to with the Shimada clan, so magic really isn’t off the table yet.

What the- you might be on to something

I have never heard of that, but I suppose it is possible. I hope that is the case.

Maybe this new character has a fox tattoo that glows and comes off her body and actually fights on the battlefield :eyes:
