I think 5v5 is inferior to 6v6. I think OW2 will never be remembered like OW1 was. OW1 6v6 was revolutionary and GOTY. OW2 is… just a sad husk of what once was. Inferior.
I think people got used to it and the forum overreacts. Its a lot more healthy for the game and makes the game feel more dynamic and fluid. I quite enjoy that the tanks are really strong (nothing like in OW2 with those watered down puppets) and that DPS has a big role to play (also opposed to OW1, where they were pretty useless and could die and no one would care). The only problem is still how support feels. Its stressful and you have the feeling that you have to do 20 different jobs at once and are target no 1. I like 5v5 much more than 6v6.
They are plenty of heroes did not get the balance for 5v5. So my opinion about it is mixed. Not dealing with two tanks is great but playing certain like Winston, Dva can be hard without leaving the team behind.
I don’ t hate it, but snipers NEED to be addressed now that there isn’t a second tank. Just like they needed to be addressed when 5v5 was announced. That was one of the huge question marks for people here going into OW2 on determining the success of 5v5 and… nothing was done about it. It was never mentioned by the dev team and nothing has still been done about it other than reverting the hp buff that Widow got for some reason going into OW2.
The other thing that needs to be addressed in some form is how matchmaking has been complete and utter garbage since OW2 came out. As a mid-silver support main I’m liable to get teammates/opponents anywhere between the bottom of bronze and high diamond.
They haven’t really done anything to address most of the issues with 5v5.
Playing tank feels awful because you’re the only one in the role, you have to switch a lot due to counterpicking/countering, and certain tanks like Roadhog were just dumpstered due to popularity. Snipers are more of an issue now that there’s less tank counterplay, especially on maps like Havana or Circuit Royal. Games are far more stompy in 5v5, and the matchmaking quality went down the drain.
And those are just a few examples. The game just wasn’t designed for 5v5 and forcing it has destabilized it.
For me, DPS still feels exciting to play. Support feels slightly more boring with less teammates to heal but it’s not too bad. I think the tank role became the most boring role. You’re constantly trying to counter the enemy tank and with the lack of off-tank role, your job and playstyle became more one-dimensional.
I prefer 5v5. I think playing with, and as, one beefy tank is more enjoyable than two weaker tanks.
At this point, though, I think role queue is unsustainable whether it’s 5v5 (122), 6v6 (222), 6v6 (132), or whatever else. QP matchmaking is terrible now and it was still awful at the end of OW1’s life, too. Please throw me some sort of lifeline, Blizzard, because I cannot always play in Comp. Please give me enjoyable games in casual modes. I’m begging you, here.
It’s a fundamentally different game and I feel like the people who love 5v5 don’t understand why people loved 6v6. 5v5 is vapid and lacks almost all of the depth that 6v6 had. There hasn’t been a match in OW2 that’s had the same “spark” as OW1 did. It feels deathmatch-y and that’s not why I fell in love with OW.
