I’ve been trying to frame a post like this in a non-infuriated and composed way because this issue had been plaguing me for quite some time now, but here we go.
I’ve been getting random disconnects since roughly lunar patch this year (2020). Of course at the most inconvenient of times- and on top of the games lost, it’s netted me at least a 500sr loss (YEAH I KNOW) in beginning of match penalties since I’ve had this issue. It makes playing competitive completely unplayable. Part of me wonders why I still bother anymore. I know MANY people are having this issue.
I have done everything I can think of or research possible to fix this issue- and none of these things have made a difference. I have:
Restarted my computer (obviously ha ha.).
Reset my modem and router
Updated my drivers
Updated my Battlenet app
Flushed my DNS and renewed server
Reset winsock data
Renewed IP
Restarted everything again.
Basically everything every troubleshooting topic has covered.
And eventually found out this is an ongoing issue with Spectrum ISP users, and I am one of them.
A few nights ago I had a great night of almost a dozen games and no disconnects and thought it was over, especially after reading that something got resolved amongst Spectrum users. It is not resolved one bit. I disconnected during a placement match, and had the luxury of hearing my PUG groupmates happily saying “at least we don’t have to play junkertown” while I was immobilized out of the game. This kind of game experience is LITERAL TORTURE.
I would REALLY like to feel like Overwatch and working and grinding my SR back to where I would like it to be is worth my time. Or even playing Quickplay games without being disconnected midway through the game is worth trying. I’m sorry to sound disappointed or salty, but I feel like I am at least more than reasonably very frustrated.
Is there someplace I can start to resolve this issue?
Is this still a Spectrum internet issue?
I would really appreciate a good starting point on this issue.
Are you playing on console? I am seeing multiple reports tonight too frequent to be a conencidence, but I can’t nail down a specific pattern. My only suspection is that console players are getting the boot so far.
If on PC, can you run a WinMTR test that would be lovely.
WinMTR instructions:
Download WinMTR from Download WinMTR-v092.zip (WinMTR) (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
Run the WinMTR.exe
Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~
If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:
All night from 10pm est I couldn’t connect to any games unless a custom game. I play on xbox. I lost 50 sr and racked up 11 game xp suck before I realized it. Est NY region.
My issue sounds very similar. On a PC, have AT&T as my ISP, but keep getting game server disconnects. I made a separate post about it, so perhaps they can be merged so we can get more attention? Keep getting disconnected from game server
FrostyDog your WinMTRs are showing lots of packet loss starting on the 3rd hop, which would be the Spectrum (previously Charter) network. It may start at that 2nd hop but due to the way its set up it’s not responding to the test so we can’t tell.
Looks like in this case you would need to contact Spectrum and have them take a look from their end, they may need to send a technician out to investigate the lines/devices from your home and in your area. That kind of packet loss would definitely cause the issues you’re seeing in Overwatch.
Your WinMTR tests look fine and don’t show the same issues that FrostyDog’s shows.
If you’re able to test a different network / hotspot / or VPN to see if the disconnections stop I’d recommend trying that. That would at least help you narrow it down and determine if it’s an issue with your home ISP.
Hey everyone, I apologize for being absent the last day or so. I have had personal issues which has kept me away from helping here. Thanks Jambrix for having my back.
