Why hate original characters so much?

And now Sigmund Freud calls me racist. I called the other princess “lolita”, I think. But maybe “lolist” isn’t as cool as “racist”. Nothing more to add when defenders of unneeded characters use that… xD

This guy understands. This was part of a lineup decided before they gutted the team. I personally don’t care at all as long as they keep releasing heroes at all.

Why do people keep assuming that? I have yet to see anything from Blizzard even hinting towards that.

it’s very simple and has absolutely nothing to do with the hero release schedule, cadence change, stupid lore, or a complete lack of one. it has been explained so many times that I don’t get it why people still don’t get it.

do you think I started onetricking Nova because she’s a hot sniper chick? that doesn’t hurt, I admit, but that’s not the reason.

the reason is that back in 1997, when my very first barracks barracks spawned my very first Ghost, the 13-year old me thought, OMG THOSE GUYS ARE SOOO COOOOL

do you think I started playing HOTS because of the unique mechanics or maps with objectives (although, again, it didn’t hurt)? nah, I was too old to really care.

I started playing because EVERYONE I KNEW WAS HERE.

OC heroes… it’s not even hate, no. hate is a very strong emotion. it’s more like “meh”. I have no emotional connection with those characters whatsoever. they’re irrelevant.

Yet, you found it necessary to label them as such.

That could explain a disconnect. I’ve had to put up with that feeling ever since WoW started dominating the roster, and have had to learn prior to this to like characters based on what they offer this game, not what they’ve done in others.

Is Blaze skin associated with Wakanda? Would Warfield be, if he ever made to the game?

“Wakanda-nobody” is a hilarious hero description, I’d add it to roster tooltips along with “burst mages” and “cc heavy main tanks”. shut up.

Hots is already the “new project” of what HotS would be. Stuff here is pretty much going to stay here, or when simple enough, make cameos in other titles as skins, or the like.

The thing about “originals” is there are ways to endure audiences to them, and there are ways that reinforce why a number of production studios “play it safe” and stick to stuff people already know.

HotS is already ‘supposed’ to be something that people know; by using established characters, it cuts out some of the design process and gets into kits, fantasy fufillment, and interactions between these characters.

Its Brand Loyalty — hit up case studies of stuff like New Coke (a ‘superior’ product by every test) or group-sense identities and there’s a quality of expectations people put into a name.

If you look out at hero requests, players aren’t so much against ‘new’— they even request to see stuff like Realm lords being playable, or more conflicts with them — the realm lords are new characters to Blizz (and some just referential) but by having time to hear their lines, see them interact and do stuff, an audience develops affection for them in ways other stuff doesn’t get.

So some of the “outrage” is the execution of the character addition, and less the character itself. If blizz had done a blue sticky that said “hey, here’s this old project that that decided to bring to the nexus; we didnt think the assets fit an existing character, so we’re going with a new design; we’ll see about fleshing out a character and story for it later” and posted that before the teasers and reveal,
then people may have been less ‘upset’.

The key details are that its just a moveset attached to an item (the chainsword) and the other stuff is fluff and filler. Tell players that and it can help garner trust in the game design instead of coming off as an off-putting gesture that just throws out “whatever” to an audience that feels like they have to wait to see their favorites, and then not get it.

There’s ways to introduce ‘new’ stuff
There’s ways to appeal to brand loyalty.

Qhira doesn’t really do either, so it gets people afraid that more will continue to be done that “damages” their interests

Some offer “hurt” feelings, some offer feedback on to help present the next “original” whatever and not deal with pr stuff.

Sure, if this kit were attached to an existing character, or even tossed on a realm lord association (another child of a realm lord) there would still be complaints — there’s always going to be complaints — but some things cultivate imaginations better than others.

I’ll list a few of the reasons for you in hopes this will sum it up for you:

  1. My favorite hero wasn’t released, weh!
  2. Lackluster reveal due to downsized team which players seem to ignore
  3. My favorite hero wasn’t released, weh!
  4. Made up reason that HOTS will only release heroes from 4 main franchises
  5. Players hate anything new with the possibilities for innovation
  6. My favorite hero wasn’t released, weh!
  7. Very little lore / build-up before reveal due to downsized team which players seem to ignore
  8. Players are racist, but won’t admit it. Some don’t even realize it
  9. Ignored the fact that the Nexus is it’s own universe
  10. My favorite hero wasn’t released, weh!
  11. Made up reason Blizz had to fulfill a social/ethnic quota
  12. 2 OC out of 87 in 3-4 years is reason enough to cry
  13. My favorite hero wasn’t released, weh!

They did say that we wouldn’t see another nexus hero for a long time then here we are 2 releases later. Besides, heroes take 6-9 months to develop so now is about when we’d start seeing heroes started in 2019.

Also, there’s this tweet,

They said in a Q&A that she was designed before Orphea. Someone else can link to it. I don’t want to go through all the rant threads.

I will say that Qhira’s visual and audio design is simply stunning. Her kit is also a tonne of fun and very creative. I can absolutely see why the team loved designing and releasing her.

Now if only only the writers and voice actor put in that much effort…

We have had a Q&A since she came out?

We’ve had like 3 since December

Only Q&As after Qhira came out would talk about Qhira… Blizzard is funny that way.

Yeah i thought you were talking about orphea lul whoops

No prob

True or False? People would not be this upset with the new hero if this came before the announcement of maintenance mode for hots. Back when we got a new hero every month, it could have easily been shrugged off, but now that we’re lucky to get 4 heroes a year, having a dud is exponentially more damaging to the game.

It can’t be understated just how much was cut when the dev team was slashed. They clearly had plans to expand the game’s lore and create its own identity. Its not ideal that a original hero was dropped with no context. But she was likley so far developed that it would have been a waste not to release her.

False
People will whinge because they have nothing better to do. The number of heroes released per year won’t have an effect on that, but it is a way to rationalise complaining about a stupid character in a stupid game as somehow being more important.
