Why do players criticize each other? A declining community

Guy on a Brightwing starts bashing my tanking in an early game ARAM even though it was a close match. I’m on Tyreal and we were doing fine holding them off until our Nazeebo scaled. He’s telling me I need to go in and let Garrosh throw me around and all this strategy stuff. Maybe I’d listen but the guy typing this is 2 screens away and letting us lose 4v5s while he types his novels. Seen this type of behavior so many times, someone giving up and making any excuse or blaming bad hero picks. I had enough of that (his AFKing/whining about a game that is almost even) pretty quick and mentally checked out. No one should start AFKing and criticizing in an early game ARAM, that there is the real issue, not my tanking. Tyreal is not even fun to play so I couldn’t care less if I alt+F4ed that one if I had to.

Next game the lecture guy picks Thrall and is on my team. Well he’s objectively the worst player out of the 10. Kept running around solo going for kills and losing fights left and right. Teammate also called him out on being one of the worst players they ever seen, he prob got himself silenced for what he said. I just stated the facts (he lectured me in prior game but is clearly unskilled) and moved on. I’m sure I’ll get silenced for calling out a turd as a turd but whatever.

Next game he gets Malthael on enemy team, he got farmed and kept trying to take on 2-5 people himself instead of going in with his tank. Not sure, just a below average player, I am kind of over seeing him fail this point. So are they trolls or don’t have self awareness or can’t figure out how to hit tab to see they are the issue? Any time someone gives advice in this game 90% of the time they are a below average player. That’s what I’m seeing.

TLDR: They either need to shut down or relaunch this game to attract a better community because the community has hit rock bottom. I been playing ARAM a while and its like half the games have a whiny entitled baby or two in them and the other half are reasonable people who just play as intended.

I really don’t understand why, but hots community is indeed way more toxic than any gaming community I’ve seen so far (not saying it is the most toxic as a fact, just saying that is my experience).

After Hots got basically killed back in 2018, I tried dota2 and league, afraid they would just be very toxic to new players. Both communities were quite nice actually, but I stuck with league only because dota2 was too slow for my taste, while league was much faster, very very close to hots.

Anyway, I rarely have to report someone for being afk or abusive chat in league. Most people don’t even say anything in game. Now in hots, I had to report almost everygame because there was always someone just throwing insults, racism, etc left and right, or someone afking/trolling. Maybe lack of punishment contributes to that around here, I really don’t know.

Maybe answer why do you critisize ppl, and you get the answer to your own question as well.

You have said many times you leave ARAM matches on a whim, so this whole post is hypocritical. All of your posts regarding ARAM have been complaints about “unfun”, “too random”, “unbalanced”, “remove X I don’t like it”, and so on.

I’ve said to you many times your expectations for ARAM aren’t reasonable, for a mode where “random” factors are the draw and fundamental design of the game mode.

Also, I find Tyrael fun to play, so there you go, “fun”, “unfun”, subjective.

These people are in every mode. I’m not going to defend them, like you, they annoy me, but there is a mute button or just report them if they are vile and racist.

That might have been this player’s first game on Malthael, as far as you know. Alternatively, out of the 3 hero choices they were offered, maybe Malth was the only one they had passing familiarity with. I’ve often taken a hero in ARAM that I know I’m not good with, either to fill a role (e.g., I suck with Ana, but have taken her when she’s the only healer on offer), or select the hero I suck the least with.

Again, it’s a random mode, you need to be flexible and remember player performance will be all over the place, due to the random hero selection and the minimal MM in that mode by design. If you keep taking ARAM seriously, you’re most likely to feel frustrated and indeed it will be “unfun”, as you put it.

This is a fair complaint, not shutting the game down, but the prevalence of antisocial players in ARAM. There are reasons for this, the MM in ARAM is token, and it will often match “new” accounts with veteran. Many of these new accounts are obviously not new players. I never go a game without seeing a player with a Tag like “IHateBlizzAFK”, on one team, or often both. Those are accounts made just to troll with, and they don’t care if they get banned, they will just make another account.

ARAM might actually have enough players in NA/EU to enable a new player queue, to avoid matching veterans and new accounts. Eh, but why bother? I’ve seen enough veteran players act poorly and play the blame game, it’s not unique to new accounts, even new accounts that are made only to troll with.

If I found myself so annoyed by players in ARAM, that I felt compelled to make an entire complaint thread about it, I would like to think I’d do a little soul-searching and either adjust my expectations for that game mode, or simply quit.

If this was a post about ranked or even QM, I’d have more sympathy, and if you hadn’t already stated multiple times that you deliberately leave ARAM games, well, then you wouldn’t be part of the very problem you’re complaining about. Just because you don’t abuse people (that is good), it’s still toxic behavior to leave games, because some element isn’t to your liking.

No idea how LOL punish its players but Hots is mostly automated and people can just create new accounts out of thin air and do it all again. A ban in this game is mostly just a gentle slap on your hand unless you value your account but most players who get banned dont so the punishment has no effect.

Also you got alot of people who hate Blizzard and just want to troll to make more players leave so I think most of the playerbase’s behavior stems from Blzzard being as they are currectly.

Some things are automated, but they are much faster than in hots. For example, if a player in hots starts being racist in chat, they would need hundreds of reports to get chat restrictions. In league, only 1 report is enough and depending on how aggravating the offense is, the system punishes the player right after the match. It doesn’t take long.

When you start getting restrictions, your account gets marked and you will receive less ingame stuff like skins, chests etc. It takes a while to get back to the “good” side.

Plus getting banned is really bad because it takes way longer than hots to buy new characters. Even longer to get new skins. Most you can only get with real money. So people really don’t wanna get banned.

Another thing, people might get worried that the automated system punishes really fast because of false reports, but false reporting does nothing in league. Your account might even be marked if you false report a lot and your report don’t even go through.

edited: You also don’t just get punished by saying some “bad words” like the f word or something. Context is taken into account.

I massively disagree, this post is out of touch. The competitive mode in HOTS has been dead for a while and it’s just ARAM that has a decent playerbase. ARAM is all I play. I don’t appreciate or accept the advice in ARAM especially from unskilled players. Anyone still pretending this game which is in maintenance mode for years now is competitive or that other people (especially ARAMers) care about how good they are is deluding themselves. If you actually played ARAM you would see the opposite of what you are describing.

Maybe this is part of the problem…people all thinking their advice is going to be well received while tuning out anything else. Why would anyone listen to your advice “Mr. High-level” if they also think they are at a high level too? It seems your logic is massively flawed here. So you give out advice to people who you basically admit you have on perma ignore b/c you can’t handle the community chat? Sounds trolly and uncool.

Real talk, was what you wrote made by an AI?

LMAO! You see? That’s why nobody likes you, and your team mates give you a hard time. haha.

I was trying to give you advice because i can tell you suck. Keep crying

You deleted your post b/c I called you out man. It’s fine. Agree to disagree about everything. No wonder you have the chat disabled. Maybe you are highly skilled, maybe you aren’t. I don’t think this is about skill though. It’s about grit. I can tell you need thicker skin to survive on the mean streets of ARAM where most active players dwell.

I realized i was wasting my time with you. Your level of suckage just can’t be helped. Placing you on permanent ignore, get lost loser :sunglasses:

I don’t believe you. I suspect you are upset and will continue to read what I have to say. There’s no reason to be angry with me because I disagreed with you. Disagreements happen in life.

Perhaps you are looking down on your fellow players who you perceive aren’t skilled. If you only respect/listen to people with skill, I will tell you that MVPing with Samuro in ARAM is not easy to accomplish.

I also have a 60+% win rate with him in ARAM despite my teammates protesting/giving up early because of my pick. A highly skilled player can certainly do well in ARAM too with any hero, but it does take a level of fortitude to continue to pick what you want despite any and all criticism. Sure, blocking everyone from talking to you is an option, but my skin is not that thin where I need to put myself in a bubble.

I’m sorry, I have nothing against you, but if you realized talking to them is a waste of time and you deleted your post, why keep replying? Wouldn’t that be a waste of time as well?

You might be on to something seeing I use Tyreal to bait out Garry throws all the time since I can teleport away. Not sure why anyone even had to speak up on that in the first place unless OP doesn’t know how to bait the throw. That advice didn’t seem that bad at all if that’s the case.

My personals rule of thumb is, if they didn’t ask for advice don’t give it to them! Keep your mouth shut! Keep your key clicking to yourself and if it’s too hard for you turn team chat off!

I deem both the BW and the op in the wrong! BW for spewing unwanted advice and OP for not knowing what they are doing on Tyreal and getting feefees hurt when someone speaks up about your bad Ty play that punishes your own team.

Since you dont know the players you are in a team with then thats properly the best you can do. I dont see any advice as toxic if you ofc got the right mindset to recieve it but most players in this game dont want advice. They just want to play as they want so giving advice is pointless.

I once asked a KT to stop getting hit by lava wave for the forth time. His answer was: Its only QM. So he think its ok to stand in a Rag ult and die four times in a raw to it just because he got a mindset that says ‘‘im ultra casual I dont need to bend myself to others opinions’’ I play how I want also if that means I ruin the game for others.

Thats why I stopped giving advice from that day. Unless people show interest in learning (which I had a few who wanted after watching me play) then I always keep my mouth closed.

You only see him once anyway so asking people to get better or play differently is pointless.

To warn others what they are about to get into.

I feel like 1 and 2 have a lot to do with each other. There are ways you can play when your behind that can dramatically increase your chances of coming back but some people just refuse to learn how to play from behind.
Which in turn only makes the more toxic about losing because they never learned how to not let things spiral out of control. Your either winning the whole time or its all over.

I lol’d, thanks for that!

and then they turn that into complaints about snowballing, how games aren’t “fair”, and forced 50.

Yes, and then of course its gonna feel like its a forced 50% when strategy has gone that far out the window. Thats probably also where the idea that 5 stacks are untouchable gods comes from to : s
