Does anyone here run into a lot of smurfs? Some buds of I play 5 man sometimes, and we got rick rolled by the same team 3 times in a row. We’re not good by any stretch of the imagination, but we typically win 50/50. This team crushed us with there hands tied behind there back on all sub lvl 100 accounts…
If you play 5 man be ready to encounter a 5 man. Some can be full smurf teams. Its uncommon though. Not rare just uncommon. I do not see this as an issue though i do occasionally play with smurfs.
Why can’t people stick to their own lanes though? What good would stomping players lower than your skill level be? Genuinely asking as I have no clue what incentives people have to making smurfs. I know that majority of people, both on here(?) and in the general player population, have a smurf account.
Some people enjoy winning so much, that they they smurf just because. A bunch of them are probably also toxic players at their ranks, so they enjoy being at the top of the food chain while bullying actual newer players.
That said, I can’t fathom any low level accounts being new players anymore. Pretty sure most if not all of them are smurfs.
If most of them are, my face would meet the pavement a lot more than it already does. I’d say it’s a so and so. Theres a lot of new players/just players that arent that good, I can’t say the rate of those compared to obvious smurfs. I’d say its around maybe 60% new 40% smurf… that is to say, the count is abnormally high, but not enough to completely overshadow the new players.
Oh for sure there are a good number who heard about the game via free promotions around social media and the like; youtube playthroughs, twitter… I myself got into the game from how funny carbot’s vids are. Just not the healthy wave you’d get if the game is promoted in the traditional sense.
1 switching from na to eu means you have to rank up again. Tons of reasons to do switch and they mostly want to get back to their proper rank asap
2 play with lower ranked players. Diamonds cannot que with silver. If i want to play with my buddy i may smurf. Theres no real draft mode to be able to do this (unranked is dead)
3 just want relaxing games. From my own experience in low diamond/masters its just not fun sometimes. If you’re tired and just want to play a new hero theres no method to it. If you go to unranked you can play qm mains and its a stomp, if you go to qm you dont get a comp. why not have a smurf in plat/gold that reflects your actual skill level with said hero.
The problem here is, you’re kinda ruining everyone else’s climb if you’re queuing up in low ranks because you want a relaxing game. Others might not find it to be as such if they’re noticing a large gap of skill present. This is more directed to people who generally do this not only you. Someone who would read what you said would now justify their enjoyment of beating other lower rank people by “I’m just trying to relax and there’s no other way to do it, it’s the game’s fault”
Getting back to the root of the topic, Dota 2 apparently is trying to fix this problem through a vague detection system that pits smurfs against others. https://www.engadget.com/dota-2-update-changes-and-anti-smurf-measures-145758802.html
Not sure how well that’s working for them but I’m impressed they’re at least trying to improve the new player experience. I’ve found LoL hasn’t been as successful in the endeavor but have more recent updates regarding the issue so they might be on their way.
I found nothing proving Hots is doing the same so if anyone does know anything, that would be great. Smurfing is a real problem and needs to be addressed somehow if they want to keep new players dedicated to the game. Otherwise they will just flock to the games that do.
I had to make a new smurf account to play with some friends, just got to 50 yesterday and i can confirm that there are ALOT of smurfs down there.
Man we even met some full smurf premades.
Though i have always supported the lower branked in this discussion, i find smurfing to be a scumbag move.
Sometimes theres just not alot of options to NOT smurf when you got friends down in those ranks.
Like i said i am completly on the lower ranks side in this case, it’s probably already a nightmare to play at those ranks, and to have smurfs ruin the experience even more is taking away alot of the fun aswell i must assume.
ALTHOUGH looking at the positive sides:
-You get a first hand look at tips and tricks on how to play, if you watch what the smurfs are doing to climb up.
-You can learn alot about the maps, heroes and strategies that you wouldn’t learn by watching a video.
-A hefty challenge in the game will ALWAYS improve your skillz in the game, even if it’s just by a smudge.
-You get a free replay in your replay box where you can watch their everymove even when you didn’t have any vision on them to see how they maximize the map, and how they take advantage of their bad team mates.
I feel a vein throb in my head every time I hear this reason, it drives me up the freaking wall
Look we’re talking about the smurfs that can solo carry, as in give them a samuro or a zeratul and ther’es physically nothing lower skilled players can do even if they’re coordinated as a 5 stack. If you’re that good I’m sorry but I have no sympathy for you “playing with your friends” and “wanting relaxing games”
Anyone who does smurfing to this degre deserves to get IP blocked permanently
I was able to do that with both Rehgar/zeratul. It happens all the time even in higher ranks. Heck even fan stomps gm/masters with his picks. Generally people dont do that unless they have a purpose behind it. I was boosting my friend so we could play together. Some are switching to na and need to rank up so they play something they can carry with. Some just want to sit one rank behind their actual one so they can safely test out certain heroes.
Best way to deal with smurfing is to just learn from losses, recognize mistakes, and then move on.
I’d rather just let the smrufs have their win
I might hate giving up but if it’s some A-hole playing in a way physically none of us can stop just let them have their win and get back to where they belong so they can get out of our hair
If you givr up you cannot learn, why not watch their engage tactics, how they escape, macrostrats? See if you can improve by overextending less. Having tighter/wider formations. Yes its just a game but that’s even more reason to just see it through. By the time you realize theyre a smurf the game is probably half over anyways.
Because as you said it’s a game
I play this game to escape the feeling of helplessness real life throws at me on a daily basis with a dead end job where I exist solely for the benefit of lazy A-hoels
Why on earth should I have to be some Piece of craps punching bag for 20 minutes when it’s obvious we are not in the same league in 10.
So the only excuse is to “git gud”. It takes a long time to learn from someone who is way past your league. Several games vs an unfair battle is not enough, and causes more frustration and unfair situations than it does good.
Other more populated mobas want to get rid of this fad, and I think the reasons are clear enough.
Yea but best way to relieve that helplessness In game is to learn how to get better. Losses are just as good as wins for that. Also if a smurf is winning 1v5 i reject the idea that the game goes for 20 minutes. Those tend to end within 15 minutes. Dragging out games is a jerk thing to do smurf or no smurf.
You got to gold by beating up on silvers and by being beaten up by plats. Im sure you have made many silvers feel helpless against your qhira.
