There’s a difference between a loss, even a harsh loss, and a stomp
One it’s at least obvious you’re evenly matched but getting outplayed by some metric or another one or two
A stomp is where 1 or more peoples on the enemy team are so much bettter then you in physically every single way you’re just watching yourself get deleted and the map turn red with perfectly timed camps and everything in between.
I can count the number of time I’ve done this on one hand and I never held it against my opponents when they handed the win after about 10 or so minutes nor did I ever even think of reporting the first guy who did.
I wish you boosted me. Playing against smurfs sucks because when I lose, I’m the type of person not to learn much. Idk what I could’ve done better and tbh I haven’t improved from when I first started in silver or was it bronze idk
Dont have to imagine it, lived it. Solo qued from 2016-mid 2020 and got all the way to diamond twice. I learned from my games and figured out how to not get smashed by smurfs.
Also only thing dota 2 did was make it so you get more points from consecutive wins. Pretty sure lol has a smurfing “problem”. Dota 2 still has a “problem”. Lower ranked players are always going to find a reason that they cannot rank up. Regardless of game. Its like me blaming lag for losing at cod.
Youre in diamond theres no such thing as smurfs in diamond. Rank decay will move gm/masters down to diamond. You will face many old hero league gms/masters on your climb. Its a normal thing.
As for beating them i dont think its so difficult to learn from mistakes. They have 4 teammates, people do use voice if asked sometimes, not all smurfs are high master. And im not saying rhat i have a 100% winrate, i lose to masters and gms ALOT. I have just reduced it.
They do have it its just at least their dev teams are trying to improve the learning experience. I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone from Hots talk about this issue.
I’m trying to get the dev team to listen. I don’t want more people getting on board the smurf train because of reasons they heard online that convinces them they shouldn’t feel bad about beating up leagues lower than them.
Let me make this clear just for the record
I don’t think Smurfs are the reason I’m not ranking up, because statistically speaking the odds of me having the smurf on my team are about equal and it shows in my games as well.
I am where I belong, I am of the skill level of a gold character for various reasons some of which like my vision won’t be able to change
However because i accept I am where I belong, is it too much to ask that I be given the courtesy of not getting smashed semi reguarly by Smurfs getting their rocks off on beating up players clearly their inferior?
There is an early phase when you’re paired with really new / bad players.
I’ve seen names like MommyPlaysWizards and similar stuff. That name just smells cute, casual and nice, likely a glass of wine and a candlelight on the desk.
You know I tend to suffer a lot with certain heroes or in certain matches, my skill is nil compared to even some Plats, not to mention the cream on the top. I also have a very miserable Nazeebo winrate. Last, but not least, I suffered badly from ping to NA. I couldn’t hit people with W on Kael’thas or Rehgar, so bad.
In contrast to all that, I was eating players for a week or two with a broken wrist on NA, just out of curiosity. Sure, it stopped and I even got stuck mid-Bronze (felt hindered enough to just stop instead of griefing myself and others), so you can imagine a real, proper, good smurf.
Sure, by the time you’re high gold, possibly level 150+, it’s getting fair, but at that point I wouldn’t call you a smurf anymore. Alt, maybe.
It’s mind boggling how almost everyone here admits to making accounts to stomp on the casuals, like that’s a completely normal thing to do, thats just part of the game that is literally built from the ground up to ladder you in the right skill level. Something has clearly gone wrong somewhere and the dev team might have overestimated everyone’s sense of reasoning.
In my case it was a broken wrist
I was actually surprised by the skill range.
The game has various restrictions, so smurfing is most actively encouraged.
A couple seasons ago Master players were not allowed to team up with anyone but other masters.
As a matter of fact, creating an alt to play with a friend is funny, because you’ll get rated by your performance as a duo. Something like HGC teams. Regardless, the game has expectations on your performance, my teamplay winrate is around 25% all the while having lost extra 20+ points as adjustment all the time, so two Gold players are likely settle somewhere in Silver or even Bronze if playing together. There is an assumption that teams are coordinated and smurfing. I do get penalised noticeably when I play alongside a team in SL solo.
People care a lot about their ranks, because apart from some really awesome players, it’s not trivial to climb back. I can’t for my life, I’m a whole rank below where I was fine earlier this season and can’t win now.
Knowing that playing with a friend will likely drop your rank, it makes it a little anti-social or disencouraging.
The solution is separate rank, which can only be obtained by creating a separate account. Being able to create multiple rank-accounts could work around it (branch off your current ratings at any moment). One issue though, it could be abused to branch and keep your best rank, as there is a fair bit of luck involved.
At some point there were separate leagues and the multiplayer league was quite literally handing out a participation trophy. We also have multiple game modes to play with friends (and these modes do have MMR), but as others noted, the playerbase takes its toll on them.
Player skill is so varied among the members of each team, it’s not funny
Rank skill grouped:
Low bronze-mid bronze
Mid bronze-Low silver
Silver-Plat (low dia too?)
Mid diamond-mid master
High master-GM
Top players who make even GM players look like fools
Bring back HL so solo que only and reset everybodys MMR/rank to mid-high plat at most and I’ll play on my main. SL is utter joke so there is no point in trying to play it as competitive mode.
I play my smurfs till master and dump them. I get to play with trolly toons and talents all I want with them and not feel like I’m sabotaging the team which would be the case on my main. It’s simply much more fun to play some Murky or some other quirky trash tier toon. Likewise it always felt awful when your allies picked a trash toon in real games handicapping the team from the start.
I don’t feel shred of sympathy to the low ranks. They are the ones who used to smurf up to dia/master for years and years to ruin my games back then. Even on reddit and here people encouraged smurfing as easy way to get rid of their “MMR hell” and teams holding them back.
As far as I’m concerned it’s all on devs for making such chitty system with million ways to exploit it. They practically encouraged smurfing by lowering ranked requirements to just level 50. It takes 2 days of playing to get there, if you play with full party of friends you can do it even in single day.
The devs made their choice. It was between “fun” with friends or a competitive ladder where you could only play with one friend. They made their choice, they live (and us too) with that decision. At least LoL devs admitted the dynamic queue was awful (I thought so!!! and quit because of that) and changed the system again.
The difference between LoL players and HOTS if I had to overgeneralize is that LoL players are generally more competitive, even in silver and lower elos despite the players not being “good” skillwise. In iron league (low low low bronze in HOTS) the players are like HOTS players, chill and want to have fun
I don’t think it has anything to do with the game particularly.
it’s the players who are just scumbags that enjoy stomping noobs. Just the same as the players who cheat. They know they’re cheating and their success is not earned, but they enjoy it nonetheless, don’t they?
Smurfs make all sorts of excuses both to others and themselves to justify it.
If it was so easy to learn from observing the enemy, then all of Fan’s fans would be diamond+.
The ability to learn is HEAVILY influenced by one’s enjoyment. If you’re getting stomped, you’re not enjoying it and thus learn little/nothing.
Smurfs are directly inhibiting the playerbase’s growth. While they also make new players uninstall the game out of frustration.
I actually find an improvement of game understanding in general.
Nowadays, even if someone doesn’t want to soak, they excuse themselves and request someone else do it. Or maybe have an awkward statement like me and Nazeebo.
On NA I found that even bronze and low silver have a fairly okay understanding. Sure, no precise camp timing and such, but an okay one. Same in EU, except I didn’t hit bronze yet (jinx jinx).
Compared to a couple years ago when someone with game knowledge in Gold was pretty neat.
Besides that, I think it’s also mechanical skills. No matter how well I understand the game if I somehow walk away from every match with very little PvP contribution. Be it missing skillshots, be it eating damage, be it being afraid to deal some. I’m kinda in that boat. It doesn’t matter how I perform in Silver, but once in Gold, it gets noticeably worse.
it all differs from person to person. One’s rank is a reflection of overall skill on a nuuumber of factors. Kinda like your own example.
Like, one person could have the skills of a Diamond 1 player, but his knowledge of game mechanics is around Gold 1, so he averages out to platinum 1, instead.
Another person could have the skills and knowledge of Diamond 1, but he has a tendency to tilt easily at the slightest provocation, so he’s stuck in platinum.
Another persons problem could be lack of minimap awareness. Or they’re terribly one-dimensional in that they can only play Assassins and as such tend to lose more often when playing healers and tanks.
The problem with this is that some guy with the skills of a diamond 1 but the knowledge / minimap awareness of a Silver, who as such can’t break past gold, feels that he should be in higher rank and therefore blames “the matchmaker/teammates”
Most people are around diamond so it’s natural that there aren’t many smurfs in that area. The biggest victims of smurfing is the lowest ranks, because even a gold smurf is way stronger than his peers at bronze~~ level.
