This guide is older then I am
Than you are.
I am aware that it is somewhat dated. Nonetheless, as far as I can tell, every single bit of information in it is still on point.
I can confirm that the information in this guide is stil valid.
The merc camp part has changed abit, as it is mostly a race to get mercs down early as quick as possible, and usually only time camps nowadays with it being “Safe to bring down”.
One of the few exceptions would be Battlefield of eternity, but even there the safer camps can often become a race after the initial first taking.
This guide stil perfectly explains the thought process of going through draft.
The ways team comps work and when and when not to pick them or pick into them.
It explains the power of passivly putting pressure on the whole map and how to do so.
it explains how carrying works in a game that seems uncarriable for some.
It is overall a well written guide that would help players below the rank of Master to rank up without complaining about their team being incompetent 24/7.
I’d say overall it is good to see a post like this highlight some of the good work done, despite it being 6 years ago.
Also fun to see the old ranking system in this guide, it was a wierd one as even i myself climbed to rank 3 on that system, and that was back when i barrely understood merc camps and how the xp system worked, i am glad to see that the xp system got changed to a degree that was understandable, because we had to guess quite alot early on as to what actually gave xp.
Thank you for the thoughtful input. This is basically what I was hoping for.
I found this guide while Googling how to improve at MOBAs, and it looked kind of long but I made myself a cup of coffee and worked through it. I was really impressed. My sense was that there are premises and considerations in it that would benefit weaker players like me, and even stronger players (e.g., a reminder of the fundamentals, perhaps provoke thoughts in disagreement, etc.).
Anyway, hopefully it helps people out.
I made 2 guides myself a good while ago, you can check them out too:
As a reference i have been in the master league 5 seasons in a row, my highest rank being Master 3600.
I’d say be abit weary when reading guides like this, take it in one bit at a time.
Usually what happends after reading these guides are that players get excited with all this “new information” and thinks that “The guide told me to go split push, so here i go split pushing my heart out”.
What usually happends then is that you do the things the guide told you at the wrong times, everything in MOBAs is learning by doing, these guides are only a way for you to understand why your doing it, not to time it out for you.
I came from League of Legends myself, where things were fast paced already and sieging was nr.1, that’s the reason i and my duo partner quickly ranked up and became pretty decent players eventually, because we had a good foot in the door already.
Take your time, if you fail you fail, there are more to learn from losses and fails than from wins, also if you are a chatter ingame, just drop that right away, if your telling your team mates they are doing bad, or what they should do better, then that will backfire HARD.
Even if it is positive or not, a negative team mate will rather be silent than shout at a quiet audience.
A “Good job” now and then is always welcome, but beyond that can get iffy sometimes.
gl hf anyways
