Now I get it, Varian

QM puts us with 4 x dps and varian. Other team: 4 x dps and Mura

Asks varian to be tank as taunt will be nice for our team and we need a tank.

Varian: Selects TB

EVERY DAMN QM GAME. No wonder there are so many memes about varian picking TB

The infamous memeblades aka winblades!

Taunt is a very bad solo tank, so twin blades gives you the better winning chances, and is a decent peel himself. Ofc, the varian probably doesn’t know that, but the effect still stands.

Well you may have been worse off with CS so he may have done you a favor still.

If I screenshot the end game results, he didn’t. He would have been better as taunt because he kept going in first thinking his TB heals will sustain him. Everyone else was ranged dps. Mura kept stunning him while their dps burned him down. If he wanted to be the first diver and we told him not to dive, he would have been better with taunt, at least he could have soaked up some damage.

Our dps was fine, he just dived in too much.

You are correct. Varian in QuickMatches doesnt like to tank.

I mean the opponent has tank and a lot of mages… still picking TB, dive alone, died vs 4-5 people alone.

The only good Varian I’ve ever encountered is one so far pick tank, Taunt and Parry(Protected) and we won the game

Classic Varian System.

Valuable tank with taunt
Actually goes twinblades
Runs it down
Instantly dies every fight
Annihilates own healer in chat
Never lucky

Still i don’t understand why people expect varitards to play taunt.
Whenever i see varian , him picking taunt is ruled out of my mind.

I never pick Taunt unless we have another tank and we have enough DPS. It’s just such a crappy main tank. He has no escape, bad engage, no damage, average survivability, and only a single CC on a 16 second cooldown.

Blizzard really needs to stop matchmaking Varian like a main tank. He’s marked as a Bruiser for a reason, right?

It sounds like the player is more the problem rather than his talent choice. He would probably be useless as taunt varian as well. At least he makes a good scapegoat isn’t he? It’s always good to have someone/something to blame for a loss. If it’s not matchmaking then its certainly a memeblade Varian

For the records - i play memeblades in QM too - even if we have no other tank sometimes and it works because i make a smart decision and play towards my strengths. Taunt is good vs mobile heroes (Genji/Tracer) because it’s a point and click ability - an easy way to catch such slippery bastards. If there isn’t a target like this in the enemy team then my team doesn’t really need taunt. Memeblades are strong in smaller fights like 1v1’s so they aren’t great in teamfights. Memebales can solo camps and boss which a taunt varian can’t.

I am not saying that the varian in your match made the right decision but QM is also the mode where player experiment/learn the game. can’t expect everyone to be a tryhard in QM - QM is the mode where everyone can play what he wants…

It’s not that simple. A Varian player who wants to play twin blades will always be matched against a tank in QM. So eventually they just say screw it and pick TB anyway because they never get to use it otherwise.

I never pick TB, because I suck with TB, so I mostly pick Taunt and Colossus Smash.

just to put it in to a perspective, varian tb can beat solo1v1 muradin, a muradin can kill in 1v1 a taunt varian, taunt varian has little self sustain, muradin has a lot of self haling than taunt varian, yes taunt can soak more damage than tb, but a good tb (sidestep king) can last longer in a fight than taunt because self sustain, varian is a weird pick, and twin blades has been nerfed a lot, i find tb a lot weaker than years ago, but a good tb can bring a lot macro utility for the team, taunt can brin kills opportunities, but thats depends if the team follows him too, if not taunt is almost as useless as tb too

Hey, you are like me.

It’s not being good at 1 v 1. It’s about being a T A N K.

(If you haven’t seen this, you really should. :joy:)

As they removed the multi-class label, at this point would it be so bad if they reworked him and replaced this Taunt build with another bruiser talent? I don’t have any suggestions off the top of my head, but it would at least remove this problem with Varain.

To compensate they could release a new hero who is a dedicated main tank, it’s been sometime since they have, so I’d argue it’s overdue.

Aww, leave Varian alone. :frowning:

kek…Well I like to play him as a main tank, but from my thousands of games it seems most don’t like to play him that way, even when it’s optimal such as vs a Tracer or Genji. I thought maybe removing his tank build would solve his identity crisis.

So wait you had 4 ranged and a Varian? To be honest, not much would have done well for him there…
